Is anyone else out there interested in creating a healthier home for their family? I am in the process of ridding my home of carcinogen, bleach, and ammonia based cleaning and other houshold items. Would like some feed back from other health conscious moms such as myself.

I did this as well. I use mostly Method HOme products which are non-toxic and biodegradeable. There are also fragrance free options available. Most are really inexpensive except the hand soap, so I stick to soft soap.

Good for you! Its good for the environment too.

HI, I use vinegar and water to mop my floors. I have started converting over to more natural ways. you can go to www.mercola.com that is a very good website to go to for more natural ways. You need to sign up, it is free but you get a newsletter via email once or twice a week. I also use Organic Orange TKO super concentrated cleaner for my kitchen countertops. That website is www.longlifeunlimited.com I also use their Rapha Remedy for skin issues, dry, scaly skin etc. The are on the Know the Cause show from time to time with Doug Kaufmann. He is seen on ch 376 Direct TV at 9;30am and pm. That is a GREAT show as well. He is ALL natural. His website is www.knowthecause.com He has his shows on his website too incase people can't view him on satelite.
Way to go with your new way of life. Do it gradually is my advice or you will overwhelm yourself.

Hello T.,

Would you mind telling us what you're doing?
For example,

~don't use candles (I have a few for decoration only)

~I use essential oils for cleaning.

~I have not gotten rid of the bleach 100% but I'm using 90% less bleach than before.

~stay away from the 'antibacterial' soaps and avoid as much as I can soaps with Sodium lauryl sulfate. wash hands often and use lavender oil as antibacterial when needed.

~got rid of non-stick coated cooking pans/utensils (the ocassional cookie sheet still around).

~I use essential oils for cough and stuffy noses.

~use the 'That orange stuff' for cleaning (yes that's the real name) and I just found a good deal on it
http://thatorangestuff.com/ord.shtml
(No, I don't sell it. I'm used to paying $20 per bottle and with this deal it will come out about $13 and change per bottle)

~use water/alcohol mixture for cleaning mirrors & glass tables

I think that's great! But to me health conscious means more than going green. My son was just diagnosed with a small spectrum of autism. Have you read up on all the foods we eat that are affecting our children today and basically causing ADHD, OCD, autism and childhood obesity?

We recently did the same, and went completely organic on all food products. We are also growing our own veggies, which is a great process for my son to be involved in. Now that we are intaking far less sugar, and no chemicals & hormone additives, I have seen a remarkable difference in his ADHD.

I am so passionate about it I made my own web site! Did you know that women who work inside the home are 56% more likely to have cancer? The hypothesis is that this is due to cleaning products. My web site is http://www.greenstiletto.com

I was just on Good Morning Texas last week talking about green household cleaners check out the video on my web site - I LOVE vinegar of the four thieves!

One of the best gifts my mother has given me has been a bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner. The Thieves product line is through a company called "Young Living" and was developed from essential oils that thieves used in the 15th century to steal from victims of the plague...and they never caught the plague. Anyway, the cleaner is based on those essential oils and is completely natural and safe. The bottle of cleaner I think is quite expensive (although I've never bought it as my mom gave me one bottle about 6 months ago and I haven't used half of it). It is super concentrated, so you mix it in your own spray bottle with water. I'm sure a bottle (that I just looked up at http://www.youngliving.us/products.asp for $28) will last over a year as I use mine so much and still have so much left! I use it on my floors all the time as my son crawls everywhere and I'm afraid of other cleaner residue getting on his hands. I also use it in my kitchen, bathrooms...everywhere! Its so natural, I've seen my mother clean her fruit with it when she's been out of veggie wash!
So...I guess that's my commercial...sorry - I've just been very happy with this product!

We have done this as well. Babies R' Us has great organic house cleaning products called BabyGanics. We also moved all cleaning products to a sealed tub in our garage. No cleaning products should be stored in your home even under the kitchen sink. Good Luck!

Hi T.,

What are you repalcing your cleaning products with? The best product out their is the Get clean line by Shaklee. It is non-toxic cleaning products with no phosphates, borates or any nasty toxic chemicals. It is very concentrated so a little goes a long way. It is safe for you, your family and the whole planet and since you are expecting a new bundle of joy; you should really research the products:

I am in the process of researching a steam mop to purchase for my home. I posted a request yesterday as a matter of fact and got some nice input back on different products which has been helpful. This would probably be a good idea for you in creating a healthier home for your family. Please let me know if you may have any input on a good steam mop. Best of luck to you, your baby girl on the way and family!

I agree with those who recommend a two-sided approach. We definitely need to be more aware of the daily chemicals we are exposed to in our environment and avoid them as much as possible. And we also need to pay attention to what we are putting into our bodies. Plenty of fresh, raw, preferably organic fruits and veggies are the key! Use meat as a condiment, if at all.

Good responses, ladies, and good question, T.!

I too began to think about that when I became pregnant with my son. I have phased out all of that stuff and now use Shaklee products. They have the cleaners, including an Ajax-like product, laundry, soaps (use for my son), shampoos, even makeup and skincare that doesn't have toxins. And the cool thing about Shaklee is that you can actually get your products for free by sharing what you're passionate about! www.shaklee.net/recipeforhealth

We only use Melaluca cleaning products-they make everything you need except an Ajax substitute. For that we use Bon Ami. Don't forget your kids toothpaste, soaps and lotions need to be non-toxic as well.
