Seeking Information on Lights to Combat Seasonal Depression

I am trying to gather some information on those lights that are used for seasonal depression. I don't even know what they are called. Has anyone used them, how do they work and where would I even go to purchase one? Last year it was such a long dark winter and I had no energy in the evenings. All these clouds and rain is making me think about a long gloomy winter again. Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

G.E.'s "Reveal" light bulbs are the whiter bulbs for every day use. (don't know if you want to have them all around the home, though. Try them out in a room or two, first.) My mother-in-law suffered from depression and S.A.D.D. and for a Christmas present, a couple years back, she received a really nice (and not too expensive - $40-$50) desk lamp, purchased from Sam's club. It made such a difference in her mood. She was an avid reader and it really helped her disposition. The brand name of the lamp is "Lights of America" and as I recall, there was a stand-up floor version of this, too. Planning ahead is a great thing! Hope this helps you.

Hey J.,

I believe it is called an 'Ott Light'. Just google it. Its a full spectrum light bulb that works well for any kind of detail work like sewing, crafts, any kind on close up benchwork too. Kind of pricey but they are nice. Hope it helps.

I have friends who also suffer from this and they swear by Alaska Lights, you can google it, they offer a variety of lights for your home specifically for seasonal depression disorder, you are supposed to go under them for 10 minutes a day. They said that regular light bulbs or house lights do not offer any relief near what these provide. I know they are not exactly cheap, but how much is your health and happiness worth? Good Luck.

A couple of other things you can do - be sure that your lightbulbs in your home are the ones that mimic natural daylight. On the lightbulb pack it'll say something about daylight or natural light.

Also be sure to get extra exercise in winter.
