My soon to be 7 year old lost her bottom teeth that are in between the front and canine teeth. Normally her teeth come back in right away but these are taking forever. It has been 2 and a half months and there is still no sign of a new tooth. Is this normal? I am really worried because she is adopted and I have no idea what her prenatal care was or even if there was any. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you sooooo much for all of your responses. My daughter sees a dentist regularly and is scheduled for another checkup in May. We decided to wait till then to see if anything happens. It's so great to know that there are experienced moms out there to ask these questions. As they say...It takes a village to raise a child! God bless you all!

D., I am a dental hygienist. We see all kinds of different growth patterns in the eruption of childrens teeth. Sometimes it does take awhile for the new teeth to erupt. The next time she gets her teeth cleaned ask the dentist. They may even want to take an x-ray to see if the teeth are developing.

My daughter is 8 and has lost quite a few teeth. I will say some of them came in quickly as you mentioned, but she has had some that have taken forever! It can be normal. I will say that my daughter is also missing some of her adult teeth so they are not there to even come in. I keep up with my daughters at her 6 month clening and dental visits. They can take xrays to see where the teeth are or if they ar enot there. Also her 6 year molars have not come in yet either and like I said she is 8. The xrays show they are there, but just taking a long time. I would think this is pretty normal, but if you aren't taking her to a dentist regularly then I suggest doing that and if you are maybe give them a call and ask them to look at the xrays of those teeth and they may give you some insight!

Hi D.,
My daughter Sam is 7 too. We just had a check up and her two front teeth have been missing for over a year and the two bottom that are in between the front teeth have been missing for 8 mos..I was worried, they can not even see buds for the bottom ones..they x-rayed the top and bottom this took a few mins. He thought maybe she was born with out the bottom ones. If this is the case they use braces to pull the teeth together.. Well all the teeth are there .Our dentist said they should all come in. They are for some reason very delayed. If by chance they don't there are things they can do to correct her problem. Make sure to see your Dentist every 6 mos. for cleanings and get a good set of ex-rays of your daughters mouth. I know its hard not to worry as theses are permant teeth. Good luck!! I adopted my son at birth and I did not have a good medical back ground on him..we have created are own through the years hes now 10.

Have you taken her to the dentist yet?? Any dentist can do a x-ray to see if her adult teeth are there. My adopted son's teeth came in slow too. I too thought for awhile that this one adult tooth would not come in. It did finally just very slow. Your dentist should be able to tell you. When we brought our son home (at age 4 from Haiti) after re-immunizing him, our next stop was the dentist. He has excellent teeth for coming from a 3rd world county.

My son had a similar problem. It took over 6 months for his permanent teeth to come in. The dentist assured me at his 6 month cleanings that this was not unusal. And also showed me the permanent teeth on a set of x-rays. So, you may consult your dentist or just wait it out.

I am now a great-grandmother, but I had 12 children of my own. I worried about their teeth, also, and each one developed dentition at his own rate. Of the 12, only one needed braces. One daughter had a little "tiger" tooth which grew in the middle of the roof of her mouth (!) but bit by bit, it moved forward into perfect place. Nature usually makes things okay. I wouldn't worry about these teeth for at least several more months before consulting a dentist or pediatrician. Good luck -- you're doing a fine job.

My son is nine years old. He lost his upper canines when he was about eight. It took almost a year for his adult ones to grow in. I was worried as well, but his dentist wasn't. If you're really worried, ask your daughter's dentist to do an xray to see where the adult teeth are in her gums.

My son is 12 now. When he lost some of his teeth it took like three months or more. I even took him to the dentist once to have x-rays done to see if there was another tooth to come through, but everything was fine so I would just give it a while or call the dentist.

Hi D.! I have a son who was born without his adult teeth in the front bottom between his two canine teeth. Where I live, we have a marvelous Pediatric Dentist who discovered this with an xray because these baby teeth had never fallen out. He told me this is a genetic problem and somewhere in our family tree this has happened to someone else (no we know that is still living), but it does happen. He's scheduled to get his braces put on March 1st, and once that is taken care of, he will be getting his permanent false teeth put in. Seek out a pediatric dentist (your pediatrician I'm sure will know the name of a good one) and get to the bottom of it, she's at the age where 6 month teeth cleanings are important anyway, and an xray will be able to detect if there are any adult teeth there... they could just be stubborn and take some time to grow in. Good luck!

From what I've read, prenatal care has very little to do with tooth growth, so don't worry about that.
I'm assuming she's seen a dentist since she was small (or at least since you adopted her if it was more recent). They should have done x-rays and would have told you if adult teether were missing. Besides, the baby teeth wouldn't have fallen out if there was no adult tooth pushing up (my brother still has one baby tooth that is capped because he's missing an adult tooth!). If you're worried, check with her dentist.

Hi D.,

You should ask her dentist but our little granddaughter lost her top two front teeth in June and didn't get her two top teeth for a YEAR!! We thought they would never come in. But now they are here and are normal. She did get a kick out of singing "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" though.

Hang in there!

You need to find a pediatric dentist. I know several epople whose kids did not have permanent teeth to replace the baby tooth they lost. They need to do xrays or panoramic to look at all the teeth so as to know what to do as the child ages.

My son lost his two front teeth at the end of one school year... and after the summer passed, and it was time to start the next grade... they STILL had not started to come in. He's 11 now, so I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it seemed to take FOREVER at the time. (his teeth are fine now, btw) =)

When you are in doubt, go to a doctor. X-rays will tell you whether or not she has new teeth below the gumline. Tell the dentist your concerns about her unknown history and they can let you know if there are any tests and what, if anything, you can do to increase her chances of good oral health.

have her mouth x-rayed. panoramic view not bite wing. my sons teeth were laying down in his lower jaw. they tried to get them up into position but they had to be pulled. It took almost 8 mo for his top tooth to come in, he pulled that one out with a sweater sleeve. the Dr. had to cut the gum and pull that tooth down into position. My son had good prenatal care and his teeth were really in bad shape. in my opinion prenatal care has little to do with the teeth lack of proper vitamins or eating properly during pregnancy

Hi D.,
I'm a dental hygienist so I thought I'd respond to your quesiton. Your daughter's baby teeth fall out because the permanent teeth that are growing under her gingiva push against the baby teeth roots and cause them to dissolve. When the root is gone the tooth becomes wiggly and eventually falls out or is pulled out. If her baby teeth were shed in this manner, then I wouldn't worry too much. Take her to the dentist and they can do xrays and verify that the permanent tooth is there. Now, if she lost the teeth due to some kind of trauma, you would want to take her to the dentist to make sure that everything is healthy, no abcesses or anything like that. Baby teeth fall out in a certain sequence that is based on the growth and eruption of the permanent teeth. Losing a baby tooth too early can be bad because of spacing and crowding issues for the permanent teeth that come after. But, the teeth you are talking about sound like they have come out at the right age. She sounds right on track for 7 years old. As far as needing a pediatric DDS -- not really necessary, more of a personal choice. Unless she has severe dental or behavioral issues she should be fine at your family DDS. Good luck and congrats on your next adoption!

I don't know if it's normal, but my 7 year old daughter lost one of her top front teeth and it took several months for it to start coming in. Actually, she lost about 4 teeth in a three week period and the first one to come out was the last one to come in.

I have 3 kids. My middle one had problems like this. Some of his teeth took months to come back. I took him to the dentist and they said he was fine and they would come in on their own time, they did. He is now 11 and hasn't lost a tooth in 3 years. My oldest was done loosing all of his teeth by this time, so I think they must come and go differently for kids. Hope this helps.

if she lost a baby tooth, the adult tooth probably is on a way. But if you worry, just take her to your dentist so they can take an x-ray and see inside the bone.
