Seeking a Way to Report Bad Insurance Company/agent

HI! recently I responded to a mamasource email and applied for health insurance. Since then I am unable to get this agent to respond to my calls and return my application/check. I've tried to be patient and I've tried even to work through the agents supposed supervisor but I am getting no where. We can put a stop payment on our check but how can we report this company and agent and who do we report to? Obviously, we'll start with the Better Business Bureau but beyond that? Can we report them to the state licensing board or something similar?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of your help. I have contacted the appropriate agencies and it has been taken care of. Since Nicole posted here, I was able to finally speak to her directly and I have been able to call the company and cancel the policy. Until she posted here, no one had told me that I needed to cancel the policy (why would I cancel a policy I don't have and how could I do that without a policy number?). Anyway, I am not here to relive all of that---I do want to thank those of you who responded. It was very helpful. The state insurance consumer hotline was very helpful. Lessons learned?

1: Never sign papers or write a check until you *know* you want to do business with someone. Even if they tell you they will hold your check and not turn anything in--that's illegal! It's okay to be suspicious of people you don't know especially if something sends up a red flag! If you need time to think, take time to think and fill out the paperwork AFTER a decision has been made.

2: Call the Insurance consumer hotline and ask about the company *before* you make a final decision. When I called the MIssouri Insurance hotline, they knew the company in question--and not in a positive way. If I had done more thorough research before applying for insurance, I would have found their complaint rating in our state is abnormally high. ALWAYS check out a company BEFORE you give them money!

3: GOOD companies have GOOD customer service. Period. Just to continue my search for insurance and to compare, I made several inquiries by phone to different agencies and directly to insurance companies. Some are high pressure, some are not. Some are helpful and friendly, some are not. I will stick with those that are low pressure, friendly, and helpful!

Hi J., I used to work for an ins provider, you can report them to the state insurance board. I don't remember how you do it, but I'm sure you can find it online. The company has 48 hours to respond on a complaint from the insurance comission. Good luck & I would do a stop pay on that check.

I am the agent in questions and was informed not only by the state of Missouri but by the company that I represent that by law I had to turn the application and check into the insurance company do to fiduciary responsibility and intent to insure. The client was left the insurance book and a written receipt. My manager has been in contact with this client and advised her to put a stop payment on the check and to call the insurance company to cancel the policy. According to the state of Missouri the client must cancel all policies with the insurance company so that it is on record that the client wanted to cancel the policy. If anybody should have any questions regarding this matter please give me a call. 888-211-3126.

My husband works for State Farm Insurance. I asked him about your problem and he sent me this:

"Depending on where she lives (KS or MO) she can file a complaint with the department of insurance for that state. Here are the links for KS and MO:

http://www.ksinsurance.org/consumers/consumer.htm
http://insurance.mo.gov/consumer/complaints/index.htm

I'd also recommend writing and/or calling the Corporate Office to complain. Dept of Insurance complaints can take a while to make it through the system. The call to corporate may take care of things quickly, but follow up with a letter to the corporate office if you don't get anywhere with it. Address it to the CEO, since they usually hate being included on those types of letters and will push to get things resolved quickly."

Hope that helps!

There is a list called "Annies list", where you can report poor service. This list is utilized by a lot of people, so they will know not to use him. Also, have you called the CEO of the company?
