I've asked my baby's ped. and she said I could eat anything. But I decided not to. Even though the fish and shrimp are "cooked" with the lemon, is still raw. I don' want to risk it and end up getting my baby sick. But I would love to eat ceviche again. I haven't had in 1yr 1/2 (since I was pregnant) :(

Technically, cevice is "cooked" by the acid in the lemon. There is no issue with eating raw fish unless you are pregnant, and even then, the biggest concern is parasites. Parasites won't hurt the unborn baby, but the medication to treat the parasites will, therefore you cannot be treated for parasites while pregnant.

Since your baby is already born and you are simply concerned about nursing, you should have no worries. Enjoy the cevice! Ciao!

Not when you're pregnant but fine when you're breastfeeding, so my OB told me. Just watch the intake of larger fish (swordfish, mackerel, shark) and shellfish to keep your mercury intake low. I'd stick to just 1-2 servings per week.

some seafood, especially large fish and bottom feeders tend to retain toxins and heavy metals such as mercury. Farmed fish tend to also retain large quanties of mercury. Anything you eat goes to the baby when you breastfeed. Cooking can remove a little of the impurities, but it might be good to do some research on the sources of the fish you normally purchase.

Ooh, that sounds yummy. I wish I had a good recipe.

Everything I have read and been told by the pediatrician says that it is totally safe to eat things like sushi and ceviche while nursing. The things that were harmful while you were pregnant passed through the placenta. They won't pass through your breastmilk the same way. If you get food poisoning from something, it won't pass to the baby through milk, just make you sick. The only time you might need to avoid any food is if you notice your baby has a sensitivity to it, like spicy foods, things that make you gassy, caffeine, dairy, etc. But only after you see that it is bothering baby. I didn't eliminate anything from my diet while nursing, except most caffeine, and I was careful with alcohol. And I think technically the ceviche isn't considered raw anymore since the citric acid actually "cooks" it (similar to some meats being smoked). But sushi definitely is raw and that is ok to eat.

Now I'm gonna have to go figure out how to make it. I know I won't find any here in restaurants, and I love it!

Hi! I love ceviche too. I know this only answers half of your question, but shrimp is almost never served raw. It may be served cold, but it was almost always boiled beforehand. There may be a few hardcore sushi restaurants around Chicagoland that cater to the traditional Japanese palette, but those are few. And they will have marinated the shrimp before serving, which kills the bacteria. In general, people just don't eat raw shrimp.

As for raw fish...yummy! But I don't know the answer to that one.

I am sure that women who were raised in coastal areas or along oceans and seaside often at fish, raw or otherwise. But of course always check with your doctor. And I was reading a post about not eating fish when pregnant. Oh my I ate tons of herring and sardines (great source of iron) and had huge, huge babies (well for me anyway -both 9 pounders and I am not quite five feet) but still check with your doctor, that way I do not get into trouble making anyone have large babies or giving bad advice.

yes you can eat raw fish, just try to avoid fish with high mercury levels...and its not really raw fish since its "cooked" as it sits in the acidic lime/lemon juice
