We will be relocating to the Reno area in the next few months. Could you please provide advice on which neighborhoods to look in? Our main priority are the schools - which neighborhoods have the best in terms of scores/atmosphere/etc. What do you think of Sparks overall? Any help on where to start would be great.

We live off of Los Altos and we love it. We would never more any where else. My little one is only 8 months, but we have friends that have kids in schools. Most private schools which is what we would like to do. We also do know some that go to the public schools and they feel the the schools are good. In this area we have to elem. schools and they both are year round. Hope that helps.

My family moved to Reno 3 years ago and we live in what's considered SE Reno. It's the Donner Springs area just north of South Meadows and Damonte Ranch. We love living in this area. We are zoned for Donner Springs elementary which is not my favorite. If you look at the school report cards the older grades don't do so good there. My daughter is starting kindergarten though and we have met the teacher and talked to other parents at the school and the kindergarten program with Ms.Tibbits is supposed to be great. One of the top schools in the area is Huffaker Elementary. It is also in South Reno, but we just missed the boundaries for it. It's a yr round school, but doesn't deal with all the tracks so that is a plus. You need t live on the West side of S.Virginia, by Huffaker and Lakeside to be in that zoning. Damonte Ranch Elem. also got high educational rankings...this could all change by the time your guy is in school though.
As for Sparks...my daughters best friends lives in the newer part up off Pyramid highway (Spanish Springs)and if we ever did move to Sparks that's the only part I'd consider. We're going to be looking for a house soon and have been scoping neighborhoods and honestly don't really want to leave S.Reno. It is more central to everything than Sparks is. Only 5 minutes from the mall, great parks, schools, etc. My husband is a letter carrier t the post office and has worked in all over Reno and knows the neighborhoods and he wouldn't pick anywhere else either. Houses are cheaper in the N.Valleys, but some of the areas aren't that great no matter what the pictures show and you'll get more snow..if you have to travel on 1 of the 2 freeways during traffic expect at least a 20-30 minute delay to get across town. Luckily with Reno being so small (we're from San Diego) you can avoid the freeways most of the time. I'm more than happy to give you any more info if you want it. Good luck!
We live in suburban sparks area off of Los Altos and vista bld. The area is called the vistas. It is zoned for Bud Beasley elementary school and has a nice walking trail, parks and close to many stores ect. We feel safe here and love the neighborhood! There are so many great deals on houses in this area right now. I think buying now in this area would be a great investment. I Think you would be happy to live in this area of sparks.
Welcome! I have lived in Sparks most of my life, except for when I left for college and love it. I currently reside in the spanish springs/wingfield springs area. You can check out all of the schools on the washoe county school district website. Just google washoe county schools and then you can get all the information you are looking for when it comes to elementary, middle and high schools so that you can find the right neighborhood for yourself. I believe that you will want to look at more of the newer neighborhood but make sure you look at what schools they are zoned for. I am zoned for one school when there is another school that is closer to me so you might be close to a school but have to have your child in a different one. Welcome. I live in Sparks and have so for the last 17 years. It is a nice place to live. My family is in the Spanish Springs area and it is growing by leaps and bounds. My kids are too young for school at this point, but I have my daughter in a Montessori pre-school in Sparks and it is a great place. I don't know if we will keep her there or opt for a more traditional learning environment when she is school age. So, I can't help you with the schools, but I can tell you that the whols Spanish Springs area is very nice. Like I said, it is growing and we are getting lots of new stores in our part of town. We even got a new Urgent Care facility. This is very helpful. I am not sure it has opened its doors yet, but when it does it is going to help a lot of people out. There are also nice little neighborhoods up in D'Andrea part of Sparks. Whatever you are looking for, we are sure to have it. Again, Welcome to Nevada.
I would go to the greatschools.net website and put in Reno, Nevada. I like the NE part of Reno. It has great schools and nice neighborhoods. You can research the schools in Sparks too.
I've lived in Reno my entire life and I love it. I hope you will too. There is a website about schools www.greatschools.com which rates schools so you'll know which one to pick. There are a lot of great neighborhoods in Reno, it just depends on your budget, the type of house you like, and the type of school that you're looking for as to which one you should pick. We live in Caughlin Ranch which is considered SW Reno, but is close to NW Reno. We Love it. I have a 5 year old that just completed her first year at Caughlin Ranch elementary school. So far, expiernce with the school has been great.
I love the area, because you are close to everything. I don't know much about Sparks, never go there. But have heard the commute into Reno is bad. So it all depends on where your husband (or you) will be working. Good luck with your move!!
