Neighborhoods near San Jose

My family and I are relocating to San Jose, CA this summer for my husband's job and I have no idea what the best neighborhoods are for public schools and housing. We have two children. One will be entering 2nd grade in the fall and the other is in preschool. We would like to rent for the first year while we figure out our surroundings. If you have any input or advice or even neighborhoods to stay away from, I would be so appreciative. Thanks so much in advance for any and all help!

What can I do next?

I recommend the willow glen or Cambrian areas. I live in willow glen and love it. The public schools are also better in these areas.

We live in Willow Glen and I also have a 2nd grader and preschooler. Willow Glen is the PERFECT spot with kids! Great schools, close to everything, wonderful downtown and many excellent kids activities. Also has a farmers market.

I grew up in Los Gatos, my advice would be to live there instead of SJ, yes, it will be more expensive, but way worth it...just stay away from the "eastside" and Milpitas

Hi!

I'm a Realtor in Los Altos and thought I'd offer my few thoughts, for what they are worth.

Are you planning to move to San Jose or a surrounding community? Do you need to be in SJ? SJ has many nice areas and there are lots of great surrounding cities too. Santa Clara, Campbell, Sunnyvale...these are nearby towns that aren't far and could be a good option for you.

To find out about school scores, you can visit the states website and research the API scores: www.cde.ca.gov

For housing information (primarily sales, a few rentals), visit www.mlslistings.com. This site is owned & operated by our Association of Realtors. It has the mose accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive information on listings available.

There are lots of great towns and neighborhoods in the Bay Area, I know you'll be able to find a place that is right for you and your family.

Hope that helps & good luck with the relocation!

Move next door to Santa Clara, costs are cheaper and your husband can commute or take public transportation.

LG and Campbell are nice but if you need to stay in San Jose, Cambrian area is nice and the schools are good. http://www.cambrian.k12.ca.us/District/Parents/Index.html

We live in Willow Glen (we rent) and love it! It is more expensive to rent/buy a home in WG than in Cambrian and Almaden Valley but it is a great community and there is so much within walking distance.
A lot of WG schools are pretty good schools but there are some that are leave something to be desired....you really just need to do your research on schools and make your own decision.
I'm not sure we would ever be able to afford to buy a home in WG so if you are planning on buying in the future you might want to look at neighborhoods that have homes selling in your price range. In WG a home big enough for a family of 4 to comfortably live in is upwards of $700k and a lot are more than $1 million.

Good luck with your move! You will love it here. There is so much to do :-)

Willow Glen, Cambrian and Silver Creek (up in the hills) are all good.

If you go to the state's website, you can track down the test scores for all of the schools in the area, which will give you an idea of the best areas/schools (and also tell you which areas will be most expensive). A good realtor can also point you to the best neighborhoods.

L.,

Really depends on what your budget will look like, where your husbands job is and what kind of commute then he is looking for- those mentioned below are great neighborhoods/towns. We just moved into a proper "San Jose" neighborhood that boarders Willow Glen and Cambrian that we love- the local elementary is good and the home prices are still reasonable (high fives to low sevens depending on the size of the home) I love Willow Glen but it is expensive to buy- renting may be a little better. Campbell was our original target neighborhood when we moved down here- but we were able to get a larger home in a good neighborhood by looking elsewhere-

If you want to send me a private message I can give you more info and zip codes you might want to avoid.
