totally normal. It is a type of allergy, both my kids got it when any kind of condiment got on their face. They are 3 and 5 now and mostly grown out of it but it still happens sometimes. :o)

It could be a rash from the different spices that are used in these products. My 3yo son gets one if he eats certain types of chips and the products dont always list each individual spice.

my daughter 2 yr old daughter had skin issues. She had eczema and food allergies. Her food allergies made her eczema worse. She was allergic to tomatoes and dairy products. Please consult your pediatrician and they can refer you to allergy doctor or dermatologist. We have spent almost a year and a half fighting her skin condition and have started to make headway. Still have eczema breakouts but can keep them under control with medication.

My son started having reactions to various foods around this age. He is now four and they continue to be about the same. It started with a certain restaurant's salsa then spread to a few more foods. We thought it was tomato based but then it happened with Kroger lite syrup. We started to take a few seconds to check after every meal for redness. We found that not all tomato based foods do it and that we can pin point some by brand (ie Pizza Hut sauce but not Papa John's). We talked to the dr and he gave us an Epipen just in case something should happen. He said this sounds more like a skin allergy to the food but to have the Epipen in case it decides to be more. Now that our son is older, he isn't as messy when eating so the rash is less often. Also, the rash is only around his mouth.
I recommend you talk to your dr. Our dr did not recommend any allergy testing since it was mild and localized.
Good luck!

Have you thought about impetigo? It causes a red rash on the face, and it's caused by a bacterial infection. Check it out on parents.com or webmd.com to see pictures, or call your pediatrician.

My son went through the same thing. He had what we called a binky rash. He was diagnosed with severe excema. The doctor gave him desonide cream, dermasmooth and recommended auqaphor. He is going through that now. He hasn't had a binky in 7 or 8 months, but still has the rash. Doc. said he just has real sensitive skin. The acid in the tomato sauces bother his face also. I actually cut back on the tomato sauces to see if it will help. It is still a work in progress so I don't have an answer yet. Hope that helped. God Bless!

Sounds like eczema. 2 of 3 of my kids had it as babies. Check with your doctor first (as always), but I'd try hydrocortisone cremem (1%) twice a day for a couple days and see if that helps. It's safe for the tiniest of babies as long as you don't use it for a prolonged period of time.

My baby girl had a red raised rash on her cheek that started at about 3 months. Several doctors I showed it too all said it was eczema. The ped told us to try several things like aquaphor ointment(did nothing), hydrocortisone cream 1% then 2.5%. Both the hydrocortisones took away the redness while she was on them but did nothing for the roughness and it all came back as soon as I stopped putting it on her. I tried a baby eczema lotion I found at the store. It helped a little. They eventually treated it as a fungus but that burnt up her face and made it ten times worse. Finally at 7 months she went to the dermatologist. He gave her desonide, a corticosteroid. This made the rash go away in only a handful of applications and it hasn't been back since. However he did say she would probably have the eczema rashes periodically for the rest of her life and was she more likely to have things like hayfever and even asthma. So if the dr thinks your daughter's rash might be eczema I highly recommend just asking for the desonide rather than having to put your child through all the experimentation mine went through! I hope this helps!

In my motherly opinion, it could be a few things, I'll tell you what I have experienced and the ways I handle it.
First, it may be eczema, yes on her face. The previous drool may have irriated her skin and now the acids in the sauces are doing that. Not only do the sauces contain evil HUGH FUCTOSE CORN SYRUP,(yes, alittle bit here and there is OK, but it is in everything..even breads, just look at the labels!!) but they also more than likely contain citric acids or preservatives that irritate her skin. My suggestion, buy Kroger's Private Select Organic ketchup (no corn syrup in it) and see if that changes the effect, if not then you can pretty much figure it isn't the syrup.
Next get some Aveeno Calming Lotion (in the baby section) for sensitve and Eczema prone skin. It has the DARK BLUE cap, not the light blue. Rub this into her skin and in a few days you should see some difference for the better.
My daughter has eczema on many areas of her body and it comes and goes, but with this dry, cold weather it has come back with a VENGENCE, her skin looks scalded and she has a red dot rash all over and it itches. I have given her an Aveeno Oatmeal bath the last 2 days and smeared that lotion all over here and the eczema is well on it's way outta here..as long as I keep using the lotion and bath mix.
Good luck!!

My 5 year old daughter has the same exact problem. She has fairly sensitive skin and when she eats things like ketchup, ranch dressing--or anything that might be a little acidic she gets red splotches on her face that can worsen into a rash. To get them to clear up I make sure I wash her face right after every meal and I use a cortizone cream on her face. (when she was younger I would use the regular strength-.5% hydracortizone). This usually clears things up. I find the problem is exacerbated by dry skin. I use a cream on her face nightly such as Eucerine Calming Cream or Aquaphor. These work better than just regular lotions. By keeping her face clean and using the creams it seems to keep the rash at bay. I personally do not think it's an allergy persay, but a sensitivity to the acid. I have also used the Aquaphor before she eats to creat a barrier. Good luck.

You've already received many good answers, but I just want to repeat that she could absolutely be allergic to corn syrup, or anything containing corn. It will be hard to eliminate corn-related products from her diet because they put this stuff in "everywhere," but you will need to carefully read the labels.

I wanted also to warn you about another product that contains corn but doesn't tell us. It's juice, especially baby juice, but also some organic juices. The label says "ascorbic acid" and you think that's great because they added Vitamin C, but when I've called these manufacturers (after my own allergic reaction) I discovered that the ascorbic acid comes from corn. I reacted to the organic juices first and then thought I'd try baby juice. The only juice for babies I've found without ascorbic acid is BoBo, I think, and is made and sold in Canada. I don't know how to buy it here. So along with corn, corn syrup, etc, be on the lookout for "ascorbic acid."

My daughter gets a rash with ranch dressing and anything with lemon in it too. We don't do ketchup but I suspect the same thing would happen. Those are highly acidic foods that can bother their sensitive skin. I wouldn't worry about an allergy though.

Hi E.,

This is definitely systemic. Allergies don't happen like this if the food is completely natural and/or the immune system is strong. The High Fructose Corn Syrup could be the culprit as someone mentioned before. You can find food without it; it just takes a lot of label reading...Is she old enough to chew a kid's vitamin? I can recommend a good one that will protect the antioxidants in her system. Nutrition will stop or at least slow this down.

PLEASE, please don't use hydrocortisone cream or any other steroid on it. Even a week's worth of topical steroids will do as much damage to her bone density as a woman going through menopause. ONLY use steroids in a life threatening situation. I use a cream on my 90 year old Dad that is bedridden that has completely cured his psoriasis and eczema. His skin looks like a newborn skin. It's not sold in stores but the cost is inexpensive. Let me know if you're interested.

God bless!

Hi E.,
My grandsons is 7 and still has the same reaction to ranch and ketchup. I've noticed that when products are organic, even a better ranch dressing without all the additives he doesn't seem to get the rash. His does go away though. Could it be that she may have an allergic reaction to preservatives in general? Label reading is something you'll have to experiment with. I've noticed that when I buy certain jarred spagetti sauces the rash doesn't happen, one is Paul Neuman's sauce. Maybe her skin got chapped in colder weather on top of just getting the rash that usually went away? Just wanted you to know that this happens in our family as well. I feel for you, her perfect sweet little face has that angry red rash around her mouth and I know you feel bad. Could you perhaps put her on a really bland diet for a few days? Instead of her normal meals, perhaps for a few days it could be as simple as, mashed potatoes, grilled cheese sandwiches, mac and cheese, oatmeal and bananas or other less acidic fruits. Also, have you used any creams on it? There are some, including hydrocortisone ointments that aren't prescription stength that may help, even oatmeal creams.
Our 3 year old grandson has the same thing, he's in heaven if he can eat a tomato as if it were an apple! So, you can imagine how his little face looks. They're both red heads with blue eyes. Maybe it's just going to take a few days without the acid fruits and veggies that would help, I sure hope so. If you can, please let us know how it goes with her. I'm an old woman and I remember it happening to my face when I ate tomato sauce or ketchup, it burned me. My boys however don't act like it bothers them the way it did to me when I was a child. Good luck E.!

sounds like an allergy, i would avoid all products with corn in them if you think that is the culprit and if that helps, maybe get her allergy tested as well just to make sure of all possible allergies
