My eight yr old daughter got strep 17 days ago with a rash...the strep has been gone after 2 days on the antibiotic but still has the rash. It is dry pinkish and scaly. She says it burns. Took her back to doctor twice, he thinks its still from the strep...Anyone else experience this? Please help?

So What Happened?

Turns out it was still strep that never went away...she tested positive again and is on another round of antibiotics. (when she 1st got the rash they thought it was an amox rash so took her off it and switched to zpack which is not great for strep)

I know this is late. This happen to my son with the strep as well. I took him to the skin doctor easier to write. LOL They told me to give him Aveeno baths and use the Aveeno lotion, they have many I use the one that has Ezema on the front labe. It has done wonders. Good Luck. :)

With skin conditions, I've found that we often get a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan from the dermatologist.

It sounds like she has Scarletina, which is from the strep, just effects the skin. Often the skin will turn bright red, take on a "scalded" look and be painful. As the infection clears, the skin peels away and fresh "baby" skin appears underneath. Basically, the bacteria burn the skin. She would probably benefit from another round of antibiotics. Don't use lotion on it, lotion will make the burning sensation worse. Cool oatmeal baths and maybe a little Dermaplast or other lidocaine containing topical spray/ointment should ease any discomfort she may have while the infection clears up.

Good Luck.

If she had mono in conjunction with strep, she could be reacting to the antibiotic.

Strep rashes can take aWHILE to go away depending on the type of infection. It can also be an allergic reaction to the antibiotic (I'm guessing she's on a 30 day amoxycillian course?)

I would call monday and say "the rash still isn't gone after 15 days, is this normal?". They'll probably have you come in.

Hi C., First, what comes with children, goes away eventually.

I agree with the below advice to go to a pediatric dermatologist.

in the meantime, what our dr recommended for something similar:
1. keep areas clean and dry, but only wash once a day during bath time.
2. use only water or mild soap like cetaphil.
3. because the weather is dry, i would ask the nurse on call, if you can apply aquaphor or something else harmless until you see the dr.

Hi C.,

If it were my daughter, I would treat the rash with castor oil right from the bottle. Gently apply to skin and allow absorption. I wouldn't rub it in, but
try not to rub it off either. Apply frequently until rash is gone. Castor oil is great for healing the skin!

Good luck!

Sounds like scarlet fever to me. My boys both got it right after having strep one season. The skin gets all dry and peels off. I dont remember for sure but I think they had to have a second round of antibiotic once the scarlet fever was diagnosed.
