OK, so I know you're not suppose to give your child a bottle to go to sleep, but I do. I used to rock my now 12 month old a give her a beditme bottle when she was ready for bed, well she outgrew rocking and just wanted her bottle, so I started around 8 or 9 months giving her a bottle to fall asleep in her crib. I go in about 15 minutes after putting her down to get the bottle (which normally isn't even in her mounth anymore). She doesn;t drink juice at all (doesn't care for it) but she does like water out of a cup (used to take water from a bottle, but not anymore). She doesn't use a pacifier or a thumb (never has) and we brush her teeth at least once a day with water (usually in the morning after breakfast). So, I guess my concern is that it seems like so nmany children have so many dental problem so young. I have good teeth, I think only 3 cavities and none for some time. She is a great sleeper and always has been, but she tends to have more trouble actually falling asleep, she fights it. Hence the bottle. Thoughts??

What can I do next?

My daughter is three and still takes a sippy cup of milk to bed with her, who cares what "most people " say, whatever works for you and her:)

I have no big suggestions as I am basically in the same boat as you. My one year old will no longer tolerate rocking with a bottle. He will let me rock him, but not with his bottle. I've taken to giving him a bottle of formula to drink before bed, then I rock him a bit, and then he gets a bottle of water for bedtime.

As for the previous poster who said that a one year old should not have a bottle period...well, every child is different. Mine has a medical condition and currently still gets at least 60% of his nutrition from a prescription formula. Please, be careful with throwing around "absolute truths"

Hi Sarah, Flouride, much reasearch has proven that plouride ruins the teeth, it ruined my nephews teeth, and floride tooth paste has caused probllems for my husbands teeth for years, but as soon as he started useinf non floride tooth paste he has had no more problems with his teeth. I know when my grown kids were babies they had us give them floride drops, I;m not sure if they do that any more. It doesn't sound like your child has teeth problems just falling a sleep with out a bottle, atb 12 months she should not be on a bottle period, and also at 12 motnhs she should still be small enough to rock to sleep, i rocked mine a sleep past one year old. Keep trying to rock her. J.

I'm in the same boat! My daughter never went to sleep with a bottle. She always had it before bedtime and I never had to rock her to sleep (she is a great sleeper). She is now 14 months and for the last month she has needed a bottle to fall asleep with. She has been really teething and I think the bottle is helping her get to sleep. This is the only time she drinks from a bottl(she drinks from sippy cups during the day). So basically I brush her teeth in the mornign and evening and then she gets a small bottle to go to sleep. My doctor said you don't have to go cold turkey with the bottle at 12 months. My plan was to get her to 15-16 months and then hopefully take away the night bottle. I think a good nights sleep is more important than not having a bottle past 12 months! Good luck:-)
