Hi, A friend of mine just found out she is pregnant and does not have health insurance. She cut her hours to parttime and still does not qualify for AHCCCS medical insurance. She has to work in order to pay her bills. Does anyone know of a low cost Women's Clinic that can give her prenatal visits for a few months until she can figure out what she will do. We've tried calling several insurance companies but there is a waiting period. She is 5 weeks along. Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I don't know if her finances would allow for this, if she went back to full time hours, but I don't believe there is a waiting period for maternity care with humana. Otherwise, maybe she can afford a high deductible plan that will cover her and the baby for catastrophic injury or illness only (lower premiums) then start a savings account for the hospital/birth center now. I know other moms who have done this and end up paying less than if they had paid all their high premiums, deductibles, copays/percentages. Also, there are a few OB's that I have run into around town that have cash payment plans to cover all of your prenatal. I'm sorry I can't remember the specific names at this time, but I remember seeing a few on the internet.

Hi, Kidscare is really easy to qualify for....it's a branch of ACCCHS but you actually pay a premium...(up to $85) you have to make under $3500 a month....don't quote me though, and they usually offer it quickly to pregnant women. Another option is Bethany women's healthcare....that's the group of midwives I saw when I was preggo with my last one, they are much much cheaper than OB's and their plan for delivery (at the birthing center) is like 1/4 the price of a hospital. I saw Connie Garcia....great great midwife, I trusted my life in her hands. All the midwives are under doctors' supervision, and acccchs (kidscare) covers it. God bless.

Let me first say congratulation on your friends pregnancy.

Kidscare will cover a womens pregnancy and they are much easier to qualify for.

Good Luck,

If your friend applied for AHCCCS through a doctor's office it may be harder to qualify. If she goes down to DES and makes an appointment she will have a better chance of being approved. I just went and was initally denied, then the lady helped me by re-aplying for the next month with a lower income to get me approved. They are really helpful and will try to get her approved. I will tell you because I bearly qualified the 2nd time that her income needs to be at or below 700.00 gross for 2 weeks. Of course that was my situation, hers might be different. But she may have a chance if she goes to talk to them. Maybe she can work something out with her employer to temerarally lower her income, or hold some back for her.
