Pregnancy Glucose Testing

I will be doing my glucose test at my next OB visit. They said I didn't have to fast when I took it with my son 4 yr ago but then I failed it and had to do the 3 hr which was normal. I was wondering if it was ok to fast when I take it just so I don't mess up the results? I'll call my Dr office before I go just to check but I was wondering what you did. Did you fast or not for your 1 hr?

What can I do next?

I was told I didn't have to fast but to eat a protein based breakfast instead of a carb based one and avoid juice and sugar.

I fasted for my 1hr test and failed and had to take the 3hr test. Also fasted for this one and passed with flying colors. But it wasn't pleasant and boy was I hungry!

sure it's OK to fast. But, you don't have to. Your body will process the glucose correctly if you fast or if you don't. If your pancreas is working properly, you will produce the right amount of insulin at the right time.

I'd do the test as they've suggested, though, just to be sure you have the most accurate results and don't have to do the 3 hour test again.

Good luck. Hoping it's negative.

I did not fast but ate a smaller breakfast before going. Did not have any issues.

Hey H.,

I just got done taking my three hour last week after I failed my 1 hour. All 4 of my blood draws for the 3 hour test were normal. They told me that you can fail the one hour for eating too soon before your test, or even if it wasn't too soon, maybe you just ate something that made your blood sugar spike (like OJ or something with high glycemic index). It is fine to fast before it and will probably reflect your blood sugar better. If you do have diabetes it will pick it up no matter what. If I were you I would fast (I will next baby!) because that test was the worst! As I'm sure you know! :) Good luck, I hope you don't have to go through that 3 hour test this time.

There is a 50% failure rate with the test, so you have a good chance of failing it no matter what you do.

I skipped the test completely with my second.

I didn't fast for either of my pregnancies...I say if your doc said you don't have to...don't. Why purposely deny a pregnant woman food? ;)

Oh, what fond memories...NOT!!! =)

I was told it was not necessary to fast, but I did anyway. Personal preference. The way I looked at it was, if I am hungry/craving something in the morning, better to have an empty stomach to get down that dreadful drink. I would hate to go in full and still have to find the room to drink that concoction in under 5 mins. I think it helps going first thing in the morning, like I did.

Good luck. Here's hoping that you pass the first time around!!!
