Ok, So my first son was a little over three before he was potty trained and now our second son is two and a half (three in october) and has absolutely no desire to use the big or little potty. We have tried everything! He is afraid of the toilet! Please help with any insight!!

What can I do next?

Hi E.,

Here's my mommy advice and daycare provider advice...

Take a step back let it rest for a couple of weeks, don't say a word about it. Whatever he is in such as pullups/diaper just keep him in it. You are in the all to famous potty struggle he holds th power to go potty and you want him to go potty.

In a few weeks from now on a monday morning tell him no more pullups/diapers. Put him staright into big boy underwear not the little kid kind either. Take him to walmart/kmart let him pick out his favorite chacters. Don't go backwards when you do this. If he pees in them tell him remember we go pee in the potty not on bob (bob the builder) or on spiderman. change his clothes and go on about your day. You may have lots of laundry to do by the end of the day or you may have none.
I did it this way with all my kids (including the daycare kids I have potty trained) the 2 oldest are boys and my 3rd is a girl I had them all potty trained with in a week of doing this and 3 accidents the whole first week. I would ask him every 30 minutes or so. Ask him do you need to go potty and take him a few times even if he says no. Tke him when you have to go. Hope this helps you. W.

Just take him in the bathroom with you every time you go. Take his diaper off and have him sit there as you go. If by the time you are finished he hasn't gone, turn on the water. My kids went everytime the water was running. lol. I did this for starters and then after he had been doing this for awhile, I stripped him down naked and just put him on there about every 30-45 minutes and if he didn't go, I turned on the water again. I do know some people who used Cheerios and Fruit Loops in the toilet. They dissolve and make great things to aim and shoot at. Make it fun and lots of praise. I also told mine that when he put all of his potty in the toilet by himself, then I would buy him a pool. It wasn't a huge pool, it was a small one, but it was big enough for the two of us to get into. I just told him I didn't want to buy it until then because I didn't want to swim in pee, but when he showed me he was a big boy and could put all of his pee in the potty we would go and he could pick it out. He loved it and was potty trained in a week, with absolutely no accidents.
I did the same with my daughter, but I promised something different because we already have a pool. I promised a doll, and she could pick any one she wanted out. I figured that what we saved in diapers, she deserved anything she wanted (as far as dolls go)!
My son was potty trained before he was 2, and my daughter by 2 1/2. It worked for me, hopefully if you use it, it will work for you. Good Luck!

I don't have boys but I heard there are these little disolvable floaters you can put in the potty for them. It's fun for them and helps them to aim in the right area. You can probably find them at Walmart, Babies R Us, etc. Maybe that would peak his interest and he won't be afraid of the potty anymore.

Also, be sure and put him in cloth training pants...he'll have more of a wet sensation that hopefully he won't like. The disposable pull-ups I used at naptime and bedtime.

On a side note, my youngest was close to four before she was trained. She just didn't have any interest even though she knew how to do it. My mother-in-law got both my girls fully trained (thank God for her!), her trick was to make them clean their own panties in clean toilet water if they messed them. Dunk, dunk, dunk. They didn't like to do it and got trained really fast after that!

Don't worry, it'll happen!

This may sound crazy but it works. Place a few cherrio's, fruit loops, applejack's, anything that is round and flushable in his potty, and a little water to make the cereal float and tell him to sit down and potty to sink the battle ships. Afterwards have him help you dump the contents of his little potty down the big toilet and let him flush-kids love to flush- it worked with my son and the cereal is a great idea even when they are older and learning to stand and go. Good luck.

There is a video that I got called "I can go potty" & my twins loved watching it! Also it sometimes helps if they see daddy go potty! Then they want to potty like daddy does!
