I am potty training my 2 1/2 year old boy right now. He has caught on really fast. The teacher at daycare told me to not use plastic panties, pull-ups etc. Just put him in underwear. That they do not like it when the pee runs down their legs. It's messy but it works! This also worked really well with my older son when he was potty training. I just put a diaper or something on him when he naps.

Good Luck!

Hi, I am in the middle of using the 3 day potty training guide, and I'll let you know if it works or not, when I'm done. We are in the 2nd day, and my little one is making progress, so I'm hopeful. I heard from 3 or 4 people here on mamasource that it works, too. You can go to easypottytraining.com or threedaypottytraining.com. It's by Lora Jensen. Hope this helps!

With my oldest we started by just bining him in the bathroom and letting him sit on the toilet and play with toilet paper. We would tear of several squares of tp and split it into single ply and then let him drop them into the toilet one at a time. This got him used to sitting on the toilet. If you have your cild face the tank then you don't have to use a potty seat or chair, and for boys it will pretty much "point" them down in the right direction and you don't have to teach them to aim. We have found that LOW presure is best. We reward with chocloate kisses. Again with our oldest we used underware and then put cloth diaper covers over them. We tried the underware at first but then found that if we left him naked he would take himself to the bathroom without ANY assitance. Potty training is parent training until they get it figured out. Tell your friend to drink at least twice as much as she gives her daughter to drink and then whenever she needs to use the bathroom bring her daughter with her. :)

If you know how, go to my page and see the questions I've posted... I've posted two on potty training and both got lots of feedback that might be helpful!

But to answer your question, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of this, it isn't a text book process as we'd hope! Each kid isn't cookie cutter therefore the process to get to a common result isn't going to be the same!

Its stressful, I'm right there with your friend! Litterally! I've heard again and again that if the child isn't ready its a lost battle before you begin... Also if there are other large transitions in life at the same time, its not the best time to potty train.

With that in mind, since we haven't had much luck yet, and we are moving into our first home in the next couple of weeks we're going to put it all away and start fresh in about a month. We're going to take her shopping and let her pick out the toilet seat, the panties, the prizes and make a big huge deal over it to her and see if that helps... I kind of just got everything and expected her to jump right in and it hasn't exactly worked yet. We thought we were ready b/c she HATES to have a diaper put on now soooo... We assumed and must have been wrong, because she just doesn't get it yet...

Hope that helps! I'd love to see if we could help eachother out if she's interested... Two heads can be better then one in most cases...

Good luck!
T.

Yes. Introduce the potty chair or seat. Make it fun and exciting. Present the child with big kid underwear (again, fun and exciting!). Buy a few small gifts, show them to the child and explain that when they go to the potty x number of times without an accident, he/she gets the gift. Buy a ton of stickers, M&M's or something small to encourage each separate trip to the potty. Encourage the use of the potty; express excitement when they go sit on it, whether they go or not. Get REALLY excited when they do something on the potty (might want to take out one of those gifts for the first successful use). Don't express any negativity at all about accidents. And let the child take the lead. The parent's role here is to introduce and encourage the child to be responsible for their own functions...

Seems that staying calm is the toughest part. Good luck to your friend.

She probably isn't ready for potty boot-camp just yet. When a child is truly ready, they can be trained in a day, but GETTING them ready takes time.

People can potty train in one day? Wow, that's news to me. My little girl took months. But I didnt push her. I just rewarded her for doing good. I'm sure you're tired of hearing this but it is so true. They will do it when they are ready. Good luck to your friend!

We had a hard time with my niece and I think the key issues were:
1. pullups were too much like diapers, she "got it" with regular underwear.
2. we had to make sure she was ready. The best way to know that is when they are "dry" when you get them up first thing in the morning.
3. everyone had to be on board despite the convenience/messy issues. neice got confused when Dad put her back in pullups because she ran out of underwear and he didn't have time to watch her like a hawk.

I am thinking your friend's kiddo may just not be ready yet. I would try again in 15-30 days.
