I am trying to potty train my 2 year old, without any success. Someone told me to put panties on her and then put rubber pants over the panties, but another person told me rubber pants are not good for her. Is this true, and if so why are they bad for her? If anyone can answer this question or give me any other little "tricks" that may work, i would greatly appreciate it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I appreciate all the advice everyone has given me. The reason I'm trying to train her now is because she shows all the signs that she's ready. She tells me when she's wet, tells me that she poops, and even tells me when she has to go, she just won't do it. The first day I put panties on her she had a couple accidents, and the next couple of days she had a lot of accidents. It's a work in progress. She likes to go potty, because she tells me she is a big girl and her sister is the baby. I know this will take a lot of time and patience. Thanks again for all the great advice everyone has given me.

Plastic pants make the skin sweat and peel, and more prone to rashes. They don't let it breath. Only use them when you are going out of the house. I left my kids naked from the waist down for the first few days. After that just undies. I put pullups on them at night until they were making it most nights, then switched them to undies at night too. And have her help you change her, you can even lift her to put the panties in the washer. Be consistent. Take her potty after each meal and before and after bedtime. If a couple weeks go by and she's not interested in going to the potty, then stop. Give her a couple weeks back in diapers, then try again.

I totally agree with Laurie A. Wait until she is ready. My daughter seemed ready at 2 yrs, 1 month, but then lost interest. When she wanted to try again at 2 1/2 years, she got it no problem.

Never heard of the rubber pants, but remember not all kids learn that young. She may just not be ready yet. they can potty train anywhere from 2-3yrs old. My 3 YO did learn at 2 because he goes to daycare and from the day she started potty training him it took her about 2- 3weeks. i was unaware of her 'tricks' but when he was fully potty trained less than a month later (and boys are harder than girls to train supposedly) i asked her how she did it and she said that he was having a lot of accidents initially and didnt really want to train, so she left him without his underwear for half of the day, which i was unaware of. She's been doing this for over 25years and says that when kids have underwear on they forget that its not a diaper and still feel the security that its ok... they are very aware when they dont have underwear on and are more likely to tell someone they have to go or would be more willing to go at the 30min intervals that she would take him. She would take the whole class every 30min whether they had to go or not and they got used to knowing others were going to the potty as well as noticing when they had to go. she would also always keep soft shorts like sweat shorts for them (which of course i provided thinking it was just for any accident days that they might need an extra pair) and she would only do that no underwear thing for the time they were in class doing easy things, like circle time, etc. with soft shorts on not when they go outside and were likely to hurt themselves or irritate themselves by playing outside in the grass and dirt of course. at first it sounded crazy to me, but again after less than a month, he was fully potty trained and only had a few accidents either at night or when we were far from the potty, which is to be expected of course. not sure if this helps... good luck :)

Why don't you just wait till she's ready and then it will happen in one day with no hassle.

I potty trained my 2 1/2 year old twin girls in a few days by putting them only in shirts and we gated ourselves in the kitchen (on the linoleum). I put the potty chairs in the kitchen with us. They would not pee down their legs but they would wet ANYTHING else. When they felt the urge they would go use them without my prompting. This worked for me!!

good luck!!!

Don't put ANY pants on her. She will use them as a diaper and wet them. Let her run around naked. I potty trained all 3 of my children this way. My daughters were trained at 2 years and the last one was potty trained at 2 1/2 years. My youngest is now 3 1/2, fully potty trained, day and night and uses the toilet and wipes and flushes the toilet...and washes his hands by himself. Run around naked is the "trick." It's unlikely she'll pee on the floor. Children do NOT like to get themselves dirty and if she does have an accident, don't yell at her but take her to the toilet and show her that what she did on the floor is supposed to be done in the toilet. My friend potty trained her 15 month old this way...it's the only method I know of to work. And always use rewards when she does something in the toilet. A sticker, a special treat....just make sure that whatever you decide to use that you ONLY use it for potty training rewards...that way she will associate this treat (reward) for potty training.

Rubber pants can give gyrls yeast infections due to not being able to allow air to flow...

Mostly, I would say not to pressure her. Kids learn at their own pace, and this is one thing you have no control over. bring her to the potty before and 20 minutes after a meal...when she wakes up, before and after nap, and before bed. Use a sticker chart and once she gets so many she gets a prize..but most of all--do not pressure her or get aggravated...do not get mad at accidents...this will only delay progress....

Some kids are ready at 2yrs..some 3 yrs and others even 4 years old...It;s on their schedule, not yours.

here is something I have posted many times.
I like to remind parents that children that are truly ready should catch on in a few weeks. If it is months and months. it is really a waste of energy, just try again in a few more months..

Here is a list of signs, your child may be ready to potty train. It has been my experience, MOST children really will let you know when they are ready. Spending a year trying to potty train is a waste of everybody's time and energy.

* Your child signals that his or her diaper is wet or soiled.
* Your child seems interested in the potty chair or toilet.
* Your child says that he or she would like to go to the potty.
* Your child understands and follows basic instructions.
* Your child feels uncomfortable if his or her diaper is wet or soiled.
* Your child stays dry for periods of 2 hours or longer during the day.
* Your child wakes up from naps with a dry diaper.
* Your child can pull his or her pants down and then up again.

You may start noticing these signs when your child is 18 to 24 months of age. However, it is not uncommon for a child to still be in diapers at 2 and a half to 3 years of age.

I am potty training my 2 and a half year old daughter right now. We are on day 8. I either put her in just panties or no pants at all. For the first 2 days, I set a timer to 20-, 30-, 60-minutes. I increased it based on her behavior and liquid intake. We went to Busch Gardens on Day 3 of training and she had no accidents all day, went pee on the public potties, and stayed dry for the car ride to and from. She showed no signs of being ready, in fact, this is attempt number 2 at training. The first attempt was at 18-months. I had her completely poop trained, but she refused to pee. I quit at that point and waited to try again. Now she tells me she has to pee, but she still poops in her panties/pull ups. I only put a diaper/pull up on her at night and during naps.

As others have said, rubber panties trap moisture and are a yeast infection/rash waiting to happen.

Good luck.

Rubber pants seem like a bad idea, like a skin infection waiting to happen due to rubbing and sweat that accumulates between the legs. Doctors say it's a bad idea to wear those garbage bag-like sweat suits to work out in order to sweat off the fat, it's important for your body to sweat and not be insulated like that, so I can only imagine how bad it would be on a child, who is wearing them all day, running around and sweating constantly! I would try taking her to the toilet every 30 minutes and sitting her there, then you can start asking her if she needs to use the potty and have her tell you, and then little by little, she will get it, but be patient as some kids are not ready until they are 3 or even older. You can try rewarding her every time she tells you she needs to use the potty without having an accident, maybe this will make her WANT to use the potty instead of peeing in her pants or diapers.

I am trying to potty train my 2 year-old too. I bought her the training panties that are cotton, but have a little extra padding in the crotch. They seem to absorb all of the urine when she has an accident, but she can feel when she is wet unlike pull-ups. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Rubber pants don't breath -
Did you get a little potty for her to use? Ours sings and both kids like it. I bribe using a jelly bean to get my 2 yr old son to sit and try, and took off the pull-ups for undies all day with pullups for overnight.

What worked for my two girls, aged two. We watched videos about it. I planned 2 days at home. No clothes from the waist down. Put two potty chairs where appropriate. Explain this is where we go potty now, no pull ups or panties for two days. Diaper at night only. We had about three small accidents each. Did it faster and better than my friends, an both times the daycare providers were amazed. You need to put in the 2 days, be positive when accidents happen use it as learning.
