Potty Seat for a Chunky Boy

My 3 1/2 year old has Asperger's, and some big developmental delays. I am just now feeling like he's ready to start potty training full time. I've tried in the past, and he never like the little potty chairs, I didn't either really, so I had gotten a potty seat for the toilet, and he doesn't mind sitting on it. It's a basic, padded Thomas the Train seat with handles, but problem is, it's too small for him, yet the regular toilet seat is still too big. He's by no means a fat child, but he does have a little more pudge to him than most kids. I need to find a potty seat that has a bigger opening for him to go in... or a small version of a regular toilet seat. I don't think standing up to pee is an option with him until he knows what he's doing. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

I bought a new toilet seat that has a toddler sized opening that can lay down over the adult sized opening. I got mine from Walmart for about $25. It's worked out really well. My son uses a stool to rest his feet on and he did really well with it. He's getting old enough now that he doesn't need it and he uses the adult seat more often than not, so I'll be trading it out for the regular adult seat soon.

I agree with Grandma T; sitting facing backward helps the child to feel stable and then can grab the tank if they need help.

There are also companies which make toilet seats with snap-in child sized seats and a lid; a three in one, if you will. You remove the existing toilet seat and put this on. This way, the hole is big enough for a child-sized bottom and it's always attached and very stable. I'd check out some of the 'kid supply' websites like One Step Ahead.

have you tried practicing with him standing up? mine liked to aim at cheerios thrown in the toilet, that helped their aim.
I didnt use a potty chair or the toilet insert, I put my boys on it facing the tank, it worked great.

Baby Bjorn potty seat is adjustable so that it can get tight enough to feel like it's part of the toilet seat. It fits any toilet, including the oblong seats that are larger and difficult to fit. $20 at TRU and worth every penny!

What about an adult-sized padded toilet seat? They seem to have a smaller opening than a regular toilet seat but bigger than a kid's one.

My son is the opposite- too skinny. He finally transitioned to the bigger padded seat at age 8, but also still uses the smaller flip-down seat we installed in the other bathroom. (Also Aspergers, still won't pee standing up at age 9)

Those padded things are even too small for my 1 year old...they are really worthless. The hole is so small everything goes everywhere....yuck.

How old is he?

Maybe something like this, which we used since it is bigger.

Or this one looks even bigger and doesn't have the high back and he would have even more room to be comfy.

I can't say enough about Prince Lionheart, their stuff is of the upmost quality. The price is really worth it.

Good luck!

Would he just sit on the seat and hold himself up with his hands...although with a boy, he might require at least one hand to pee...not sure, my boy isn't potty trained yet! LOL! I have heard of some people saying that they had luck with boys sitting on the potty seat (the reguular one) backwards and peeing that way, that might work?? My daughter hated those little potty seats you put on top and just rather sat on the seat. She did have to hold herself but it worked and it was fine. Good luck!

My Andy has PDD, I didn't use any potty seats because if they shifted it completely freaked him out. I found if you have him sit sideways on the seat it has enough stability without the chance of the seat shifting.

I really think if I had used potty seats he would still be using diapers today. Okay maybe not today but I think it would take a lot longer.
