I hope someone can help with this, sorry it is so long. I have a 3 mo old DD who is EBF, Ever since I had her I am having horrible memory problems. Let me start off by saying I have battled depression and ADHD since I was young. My memory loss is getting to the point of extreme (or so I feel) I feel like I am out of control! I am normally very methodical in the way I do things, almost to the point of obsession. I always put my glasses, phone, keys etc in the same place, but since I gave birth everything has gone to hell. I am constantly losing things, forgetting what I am saying mid-sentence, even as I am writing this I am forgetting what wanted to say! (so sorry if it is all over the place and hard to follow) For instance. I have locked my keys in my car WHILE it was running 3 times! I have a thing about making sure my keys are in my hands when I lock my door, but I have been forgetting. I have trouble focusing on the task at hand, or remembering things I was supposed to be doing. For instance, I ran to the gas station a few minutes ago, brought my stuff to the desk, swiped my card, and walked out the door with stuff in hand. The cashier had to chase me down so I would enter my pin. I get that done, leave, and 5 minutes down to road start freaking out that I forgot my purchase, even though it was in the seat next to me. I dumped my glass of water in the sink, and 5 minutes later asked my husband why he had dumped my water out. I am forgetting peoples names, and even how to spell (thank goodness for spell check) I can't do basic math in my head, and if I am reading/watching a show I constantly have to go back and re-read/watch what I just saw. I recently lost my glasses for 3 days, turned my house upside down looking for them, and finally found them in a coat pocket in the closet, and I don't even remember wearing that coat! My daughter has been battling thrush, and I can't remember half the time if I have given her medicine or not. I freak out when I leave the house that I have left the stove/curling iron etc on, but 2-3 minutes later have completely forgotten about it.

Sorry if this is too long, and I know there is more I wanted to say but have forgotten, but I need HELP! Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get my memory back?!? BTW, my daughter is sleeping through the night, and I get 8-9 hours of sleep.

What can I do next?

I suggest that you get treatment for your depression and ADHD. Both of those cause memory loss. Talk with your doctor. There may be other medical reasons for this. You can take medication for depression and ADHD or you can try some of the natural OTC mood lifters such as St. John's wort. Ask what would be safe for your baby.

I also suggest that you get counseling to deal with the depression and the anxiety that the depression is causing. When one is depressed their mind isn't as sharp and it's easy to follow into patterns of worrying about everything which increases the depression causing more memory loss. Counseling can also help you with the ADHD. There are "tricks" to use that help you focus and remember.

It's normal to be so distracted after the birth of a child - everything has changed, and you are also being hyper-vigilant to be sure your baby is safe and cared for. That may mean that so many other things are being pushed aside and given lower priority. It's wonderful that your daughter is sleeping through the night and that you are too, but it may not be entirely deep or restful sleep for you if you are still "on guard" listening for her to wake.

There are some things you can do nutritionally to help ADHD and brain fog - I have a colleague who battled ADHD as an adult and has had marvelous results, and I battled depression for many years until I found safe solutions. There is a new product (about 2 years now) for focus, fatigue and stress relief that is safe. So you could go that route if it interests you more than the doctor and medication route. I have weaned off my depression meds over time, with my doctor's assistance and blessing, using effective nutritional supplementation.

I think your state of hyper-vigilance can be lessened if you do some things for your body and brain. You'll feel more focused and then more confident that you have turned off the appliances and locked the door, etc.

A., I had the same issue when I had my son. Although, I do not believe I had it as bad. For me the key was hormones. I waited a full year until my son was weaned and went on BHRT. My life changed. I was sleeping better (I could 8+ hours, but not felt like I slept at all), felt more in control of my emotions (no more depression), my memory came back, I had more energy, etc. If you are struggling with any of these other issues, it might very well be a hormone imbalance which can be checked using a simple blood draw.

If you dont think you are just sleep deprived ask your doctor to check your thyroid. Thyroid status can change due to pregnancy or childbirth. And hypothyroidism can be a treatable cause of depression. Plus low thyroid symptoms can mimic ADHD.

Normally I have a good memory, but the only time I did things like locking keys in car or running gas tank empty was shortly before I was dx'd and treated for hypothyroidism. Oh and in addition to forgetting things I couldn't do simple math then either.

this happened to me. i loose my phone and keys more than anyone ... for months at a time. I also tried to unlock my front door with my car key opener. I assumed it had to do with lack of sleep for months at a time. But I suppose not? Our youngest is almost three years old and things are falling back into place and my health is getting better.

I know there are games you can play to help build your brain also brain food that is healthy for your mind. Good luck.
