Platform Beds

I've been without a box spring for my entire life. a trundle bed when I was little, then a bunk, hubs and I have one on slats. It works just fine. You might want to put an old quilt down under the matress to protect it from the platform/ slats.

Yes, I have one and would buy one for a 9 year old. I made the mistake of buying a full size loft bed last year for our 9 year old. There is little clearance up there and the coolness wore out very quickly. I'm planning on taking it apart soon and getting either a platform with storage underneath or a trundle.
See, I thought the loft would prevent her from shoving all the mess under her bed when told to clean her room. Plus give her more floor space and a desk. It was a big fail.

Our boys (5 & 8) sleep on bunkbeds, which is essential two platform beds. They are very happy with their bed. We do want them to have their own room someday, so at least one of them will get a different bed. But that has nothing to do with the bed itself.

Are you concerned that he will be too old for the bed? That he'll consider it a baby bed? I wouldn't be concerned about it being a platform bed. Adults can sleep comfortably on a platform bed. I would only be concerned if the designed was somehow geared towards children - racecar bed, train bed, etc.

Both of my boys have bunk beds - which means no box spring. They are fine. We bought better mattresses and for my oldest son, because he has the futon double bed/couch at the bottom of his, we bought the 8" mattress and then one of the memory foam pads. It's really comfy!

IKEA has some great platform beds! If the mattress is too hard for your son, get a memory foam pad to put over the mattress.

Many platform beds have storage underneath....which is great!!

Since I have two bunk beds - and a 14 and 12 year old who have had bunk beds since they were 3? Yes. I would invest in it!

Just make sure you realize that the box springs have give. They bend and allow the mattress to.....sink in more? A hard mattress on a slab of hard stuff is going to be extra hard.

So plan on getting a mattress that is a bit softer maybe.

My kids' beds don't have box springs.

Our bed is really old. It requires the use of a box spring as a foundation to hold the mattress. If the bed frame has a solid platform or close-together slats, no box spring is required.

For a 9 year old, you want a frame that is large enough to grow into and sturdy enough to last until he is an adult.

My husband and I got one for us a year ago - it is from IKEA and has four very large drawers underneath (queen size). It is awesome! I love the extra storage (we have two pillows and a queen size quilt in one of the drawers) and it is very comfortable. We did not buy a new mattress, just threw away the box spring. I also like that it does not roll on our hardwood floors:)

If you are getting for your son, I would suggest either drawer storage underneath or a trundle. Otherwise, you end up losing the storage space!

My 17 year old has had a platform bed for about 6 or 7 years.It has drawers under it for extra storage, and she loves it. As far as the box spring...as long as you have a mattress with good support, not having a box spring is not an issue. When I am ready to replace my mattress set I plan on getting a queen size one for myself. One with lots of storage space...

I have one and like it well enough. Definitely less expensive, since we didn't have to buy a box spring. HOWEVER...I wouldn't buy one for an exuberant child. Ours has our mattress resting on slats and my husband broke several of them by jump-sitting on our bed too hard. A young boy will destroy a bed like ours. A grown man did. :-)

I have three kids, 5 people in the house, and not a single box spring. All platform beds with memory foam mattress, no springs what so ever.

Not even sure why we ever thought we needed box springs to begin with.
