Partial Gray Teeth

Hi Moms!
I was wondering if any of your little ones have or had partial gray teeth? My son's two front teeth are gray and it's just the lower half that is gray. I've called the dentist and was told it will go away on it's own. My husband researched online what it could be and it's possible that he has had too much iron. My son has not been on any antibiotics, hasn't fallen on his front teeth, takes a daily vitamin, basically he has been healthy so this is just throwing me for a loop.
Any suggestions or stories would put me at ease.
Thanks in advance!
M.

So What Happened?

Hi Mamas!
I want to thank you all for responding to me. I have stopped giving my son the vitamin and it looks like his teeth are whiter already!
Thanks again!
M.

My daughter had the same thing. I asked her dentist when I took her for her first cleaning at 1 year and she said it's just the iron from the vitamins she's taking. (She gets PolyVisol with Iron.) My daughter's teeth were stained in front on the top and it polished right off. I've been regularly brushing her teeth twice a day since and it hasn't come back.

My daughter's teeth turned gray when the doctor asked us to give her iron supplements when she had unexplained anemia and malabsorption of protein at around age 2. I freaked out, thinking it was permanent, but after removing the iron supplements it went away on its own after just a few days and there is no sign of discoloration now. I know tetracycline can do the same thing, but that's permanent. I would look into his diet/vitamin routine first.

This is very common, it's calcium deposits. My son is 16 months old and has the same problem. I took him to the dentist at 1 year, they cleaned his teeth and it came right off, but it's already coming back. It will go away on it's own, so you can do nothing about it, but if you want him to have white teeth just take him to the dentist and they will take care of it.
Good Luck!

My 8 month old's 2 bottom teeth are slightly gray on the inside. When I had my 3 year old at the dentist, the same one I saw as a kid, I asked him about it. He told me not to worry about it, so I am not going to.

By the way, I love your son's b-day!

My oldest son use to get brown teeth and I never did figure out what the actual cause was. At first I thought he was drinking too much apple juice but then realized that they turned brown after using amoxicillan. The coloring always went away after a little while. I just made sure I was extra careful about brushing and giving sweet treats for a while until it went away. I still do not know what actually caused it but it hasn't happended now for about a year.

I too use to work outside of the home. I was a teacher for six years then ventured into my own High Fashion Jewelry business. I have been doing it now for 3 years.

Good luck! There are always mysteries with kids aren't there?

Too much flouride can cause this problem, also. That's why I use toothpaste without flouride. It's a catch 22. They need the protection from cavities, but then the flouride can make their teeth look bad anyway.

My son had the exact same thing on his teeth. I hated it. The doctor told me it was probably because of his iron supplement he had to be on. The dentist said that the stains would remain, but when his permanent teeth came in they should be white. He had these gray teeth for a whole year! I went to the store and bought my own little scrappey thing that the dentist has and scraped the front of his teeth. Sure enough, all the gray scraped right off. His little teeth are a beautiful white now. The gray never came back either.

Hi M.,

My daughter had greyish-black spots on her teeth as soon as she started teething. I thought if I brushed them harder it would go away....:) But, I too, asked my dentist and the discoloration did disappear on its own and now she has beautiful white teeth. I don't know if this matters, but she only drinks milk and water and I help her brush her teeth really well twice a day. Don't worry!

That is really interesting. I looked that up as well as your husband and I keep finding high iron. Maybe you should take him to a children specialised dentist. I know dentist usually want to wait until they are three but just explain your concern to them.

Take away the vitamin for a month or so and see if it goes away. It is usually from too much iron or trauma to the gum/tooth. Maybe the particular vitamin he is on isn't a good match for him.
