hi everyone - i have a little problem that i could use some advice on. While i was pregnant with my son, i gained almost 90 lbs. since i quit breastfeeding him, i 've been on a diet and have lost 36 lbs. i still have 60 left to lose. My husband, however, is trying to gain weight. he does all the cookng and we can't seem to find meals that both of us can eat - mine are low calorie and his are high calorie. he also keeps soda, chips, candy everywhere in the house, things i don't need to have around. they aren't that great for him either, he's at risk for diabetes. try as i do, i can't seem to make him understand how important it is for me to be at a healthy weight again, and he takes it personally when i can't eat the meals he's prepared. i've tried to explain it to him, but now i'm at a loss and would really apprieciate some advice. also, if anyone knows of a stroller exercise group nearby, could you let me know? thanks.

What can I do next?

M.,
My husband and I aren't exactly where you are but somewhat. I am working on losing weight and he is working on it but wants to. So Here is my suggestion for you. In the last month I have managed to lose 13 pounds by not watching what I eat but how much I eat. I can enjoy the same meals that my husband does just not as much. I get up at 5:15 am and go walking. I live in Spring Hill if you live somewhere near there I would love to have a walking partner even if it isn't at 5:15. The only reason I get up that early is because that is when my husbands alarm goes off for work. I weigh myself once a month and in the last 3 months I have lost a total of 38 pounds. I started at 198 which I got up to thanks to pregnancy. I weighed myself monday and I am currently at 160. My goal is not a specific weight but to fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes. I have another 2 inces to go!!! Let me know if you have any questions.

My husband tried the "Fat Resistance Diet" by Dr. Leo Galland and lost 33 pounds in 8 weeks. Seriously...he hasn't gained one back since! I'd go on and on about how great it is (because it is) but you can just go by the book at Borders or something. It's awesome and the food is really tasty! Just thought I'd pass that along!

Although I'm not actively trying to lose weight, I go by the motto "Eat Less, Move More". So, I try to eat less food and walk my babies more! Good Luck.

It's hard when you and your spouse are on differing diets. I highly recommend www.sparkpeople.com for eating healthy. Maybe your husband needs to eat healthier options and exercise to improve his weight. Muscle weighs more than fat. And you can use the program to plan your menu for the week and select exercise options for you that can involve your little one, like pool time, walking the park trails, etc.

I have gone almost completely vegetarian and my husband still likes meat. I just keep healthy options for both of us. Frequently he enjoys eating whole wheat pitas with me at lunch filled with garlic humus, garden greens (I buy the kind in a bag), provolone, onion and tomato. Very healthy, great source of protein and vegetables. The whole family is hooked on them. It's important to model good eating habits to your son so he will learn to make healthy choices too.

If your husband does sparkpeople too, it will give him menu options to help him add more calories, but you will still be eating pretty much the same things...just different amounts.

You'll have to take a more active role in chosing the menus, even if he does prepare the food. Otherwise you will be upset with his choices and he will be upset you are not eating it! :-)
