I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you really feel the need to cover up, use just a light weight recieving blanket. But try to leave the top open so baby can breath. but your babies face and the top of your shirt will cover almost everything. most people will look away anyway. others will stare in fascination. and the few that might make a comment are just rude and uneducated. your babies health and well being are much more important than them anyway.

try not to be worried about offending anyone. usually, if people notice you are nursing they will avert their gaze. if they don't look away, then they aren't offended. have you ever tried breathing under a blanket for any period of time? don't feel forced to make your baby do it because of fear of what people may think.
i have NEVER in 20 months (total) of nursing in public tried to hide my babies' faces, nor have i encountered anyone who seemed to have a problem with my nursing. if i ever do, i wouldn't let it bother me, especially if i am in florida and won't ever see those people again! have a GREAT vacation, and RELAX!

Why not just use a rec'ing blanket? They are cheap and light weight.

I have a monkey bums sling that works very well. I did not personally use it for nursing but my sister in law did with all three of her children.

Have you tried some of the second hand stores like Once Upon A Child or Jellie Bean? They are very picky about what they take in but the prices are very good:)
Good luck and have a great time on your trip!

I'll third (or fourth? or fifth? ;) the Target nursing wrap. It's cheap, simple black so it goes with everything and has a "peek-a-boo window" so that baby can see mom (in the event that your little one is as nosey as mine is!).

Hello! Check out my site, A Mother's Gift: www.amothersgift.net - I make nursing covers, and offer discounts to Mamasource members. If you're interested, just contact me, and I'll send you the discount code to use. These nursing covers are great because they are lightweight, the neckline is flexible so you can always keep eye contact with your baby, and there is a large terrycloth panel to help with clean up as well.

I have a 10 week old, I bought a wrap similar to the Moby nursing wrap...if you would like it, I can give it to you....he doesn't care for it. It's cotton and spandex, and it is a large piece of fabric. I find it a bit of a pain to try to wrap around myself but a lot of people like these types of wraps. It would allow you to nurse discreetly. It is called the sleepy wrap and says its for newborn to toddler. It is free to you, if you want it, email me back if interested. Thanks

Target has a black nuring wrap that is about $11. It's not great but it works. It will at least let you keep covered up and looks good with almost anything you wear.

I'd recommend a lightweight (but not see-through) blanket that's big enough to cover your top and the baby, but not so big that it is unmanagable. I'd practice too. Sometimes it can be a bit awkward for both at first. Make sure you have a nursing bra that you can fasten and unfasten with one hand too. Good luck!

Have you considered just a shawl to drape over you while you nurse? It is what I used when in places other than home.

Instead of devoted to nursing wraps... I used simple shawls.

They can be much easier to shop for.

in the cleveland area, J. (cleve hts), makes the best slings and at 7 months you should be able to bf in a ring sling just fine. check her stuff out at snugglebugstore.com. if you are in a hurry, she probably has a few slings already made, or you can pick your own fab.

a LLL mom told me that she loves her kangaroo pouch for her newborn. that is the namebrand, and i have not looked it up, but am planning to have one on hand for our next baby.

I found that nursing my baby in an open-tailed ring sling was a *fantastic* way to nurse discretely on the go, and the sling is a WONDERFUL tool for getting through airports without all of the bulk of strollers and carseats (ship them through, and sail through the airport w/ your baby in your sling!).

If you know how to sew, you can make your own sling - here is a great, free pattern:
http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/sling.html

Here are some pictures and different brands of the type of sling I'm talking about - of course, the prices can very greatly! But you can get a ring sling for a very decent price, and you can certainly make your own even more cheaply. Either way, I promise you that your sling will pay for itself extremely quickly and you'll wonder how you ever lived without one!:

Hope this helps, and happy travels!

Just be a proud mom and be assured that this is "THE WAY" (the best way) to nourish a child. It is THE EASIEST way, too --- think about it... no bottles to mess with on vacation --- I always thought before we had our first child that once we had the baby, we'd never be able to go anywhere -- well she didn't slow us down - we went everywhere - including Florida and other places - we did with the other two, also!

I agree with the two moms who said to not worry - it really is true - most people love to see a nursing mom and baby - some may be embarassed - but I think that is because of their own thoughts - not because YOU are feeding your baby the "natural way". I nursed all 3 of my children and never really COVERED up - I wasn't HANGING out either. Your wardrobe may need to change depending on what you usually wear... Just make sure the top you wear can cover you mostly when lifted to nurse. The baby will cover most of what would show when you life your top.

I love to see moms nursing - I feel like they are giving their child THE BEST nourishment possible!

Not sure if you are driving or flying, but my husband and I are traveling musicians, so we are allllways on the road...when our daughter was smaller my husband would put a huge tarp around the outside of the car whil i was in there feeding her!! Not exactly practical, but not exactly a story i really tell people unless they're a mom!!

i bought a "nursing window" from target and loved it. looks like a shawl, thin material. just drapes over your shoulders and flows over the baby. discreet and comfortable. best part very inexpensive. i think i paid only about 7 or 8 dollars for it. good luck.

While the name is terrible, the Hooter Hider is great. It is large enough where it will cover you (even on the sides) and it has a plastic seam at the top so you can see inside and adust if needed. It definately has given me the confidence to nurse my daughter in public.
