My daughter is getting her first Nintendo DS for Christmas-she is 5 1/2. Looking for game recomendations being as we know NOTHING about this sort of thing (yet). Are there any educational games your kids like? Any girly games that fit someone her age? Looked online and not sure what's good or bad, a big hit or a huge dud.

My daughter loves her Dogs game. You adopt a dog, feed it, play with it, train it. It's adorable. My son (almost 4) can play it as well. My favorite part? It has a bubble wand on the screen where when you literally blow on the screen bubbles blow into the room with the puppy and he/she chases them. I know they have a Cats one as well as Horse but we haven't played those before.
Games that require little/no reading:

Crayola Treasure Adventures (a game and also about 50 coloring pages)
Any of the Zhu Zhu Pet Games
Ni Hao Ki Lan (sp)

My daughter is 3 and she can play all of these games. When she first got it I would sit with her and go over the jist of the game. Now, she figures them out herself. My 5 year old nephew also loves the Lego Adventure games but he always ends up frustrated or asking for help over and over. The above games let them play by themselves and also feel successful that they mastered it themselves. Good luck in your search, I'm sure she is going to be very excited!
there are the Elmo games that teach letters and numbers (I realize she may not need the help at 5 1/2 but some do)
the mario games are fun for all ages
there are littlest pet shop games (though I"m not sure how much reading is involved in them)
I would suggest going into a Game Stop and talking with the people there (they are usually pretty knowledgeable, at least about the games for older players)
the Petz games seem to be pretty popular also
as for the huge hit/dud it all depends on your child, what she loves her friend may hate

My 5.5 year old has asked for the Wonder Pets DS game. She has one of the Littlest Pet Shop games and loves it. The ZhuZhu pets game is another one that my 7 year old daughter requested.
I purchased a game from Big Lots that was some sort of gymnastics thing. They both love it and it was only $10. There are other games like the gymnastics one in different platforms like ballet.

Mario cart cooking momma designer anything...um theres also pet shop and others like little mermaid and stuff. Theres alot of age apropriate games and fun ones too that girls like to do theres also a brain one or like monopoly and other games they can challange there minds like mind age and scrabble and crosswords.
There are very few games for a 5.5 yr old on the DS.

check gamestop for used games , if it's the DS lite she can play game boy games or gameboy video on it. Ask the people that work at Gamestop they can direct you to games she might like. They are generally very knowledgeable about games.
