Most diaper brands offer a Newborn size (N). I know that pampers sells a Newborn box of 96. I wouldn't buy a lot of them at one time so that you don't get stuck with a bunch of small diapers. Luvs tend to run smaller than pampers and huggies.

My children were both just below 7lbs when we brought them home, and we used pampers swaddlers. We had to fold them over and cinch them down to make them work. Several brands make preemie sized diapers which would probably work better, but they were harder to find in our stores, so I went with the easy route. Considering how quickly babies go from 6/7lbs to 10lbs, you'll be fine with size 1. I bet the Kirkland diapers would be fine, too.

I would try a couple small packs of different brands to find what works for your child. They all fit differently. When you find what you like, you can order bulk from diapers.com or you can get big boxes at Babies R Us. They're cheaper that way. We like the Swaddlers and used Swaddlers Sensitive til my daughter outgrew them (only go to a 2) because she had really sensitive skin. If your baby is smaller than 7 lbs, you need newborn diapers.

The hospital gave a New Mommy pack with a few diapers in it and coupons for several brands. You can go through quite a few diapers quickly with a new born. The thing is, every baby has a shape of their own, and what fits one well won't necessarily fit another baby as well. Huggies was the best fit for my son. Then when he was about 6 weeks old, he was in a new size and another brand then fit him better than the next size up in the old brand. I think you just have to do a certain amount of trial and error. If you're getting lot's of leaks, then it's time to try something else till you find something that works better.

We used Swaddlers for the first couple months, then switched to Kirkland's Signature from Costco. Our son was 7 lbs. & 4 oz. at birth and lost about 1 lb. in the beginning. Once we got the whole feeding thing working he started packing on the ounces. I guess our boy was around 10 pounds once the Kirkland's size 1/2 diapers started fitting really well. We've used them ever since.
I've never used cloth diapers, so I'm not sure which ones fit the best. They're probably just like disposables--one brand works for your neighbors' kids, but another is best for yours. I see that Costco sells Bumkins brand on their website, so they might be worth looking into.

Yes pampers swaddlers can be expensive for not many diapers , but I used them for the first few weeks with number 2 & 3 as they were alot smaller than my first & found that normal sized diapers came up too high on them (almost up to their chest). If your little one is still under 7lb it may be worth just using them for a few more weeks , he will soon gain weight and before you know it he will be 10lb +!!
