My husband and I have both been laid-off and are not having much luck finding a new job. I came up with an idea of a dog poop picking up company. I looked online and found a few others in the metroplex. Does anyone out there think that this might be a profitable business? Any ideas apprciated.

Thanks.

Sounds like a good idea. You can also offer simple lawn service/clean-up too or even car washing. =D

There are several currently in your area so please look at the competition including Pet Butler - which is a franchise you could buy into. Their rates are very competitive. Being a pet care professional, we also offer that service but cannot meet their rates which are pretty awesome actually lol!

Check around for what is going on around online, craigslist, etc. for your competitors - or partners.

Businesses pop out of the ideas and if there is a demand, there is a market. Also understand that marketing and management will take a huge chunk of your day and your funds while you are getting off the ground - which is the same with any small business.

I was involved with small business consulting for many years before I decided I wanted my own small business lol!

Hi M.-

Don't know now, given this economy whether people would pay for this or not...but one company in my area (years ago) was called "Dooty calls"...lol I thought it was clever, and would have called them if I had had a need...

One other company was a chimney cleaning company called "Ash Kickers" lol...IF I had had a fireplace then...I would have called them too!

I would suggest looking into a 'marketing analysis'...if there is a university near you...maybe contact the business school...and some students could (for class credit perhaps??) assist you in finding something that would "stick" (pun intended) in your area??

Best luck!

Sure, why not?
Sounds good.

In Europe, in some countries, they actually have, dog-poop cleaners. Government employees.
It is needed.

In my State, there is not a lot of dog poop everywhere.
It is 'law' that the pet owners HAVE TO pick up their dog's poop. So thus, all pet owners have plastic baggies they carry with them to pick up their own dog's poop, along the way as they walk their dogs.
Our streets here, are pretty clean. Sans dog poop.
And we have a leash law. No dogs can just run around unattended or without a leash.

So how is it in your State?

I would hire ya!!! Especially if you took the poop with you when you go. :) It's worth a shot... Should have fairly low start up costs too, so if it doesn't pan out, you aren't out too much. You could call it Poop-a-Palooza. Hee hee hee. You could advertise via Facebook, Craigslist, Classifieds, Fliers at pet stores, Fliers in mailboxes (target known pet owners...) I know a lot of apartments that the tenants aren't as good about cleaning up after their pets as they should be, so you might even be able to contract with places like those.

You could take it a step further, and offer dog walking, and cleaning of other animal things... like rodent cages, litter boxes, etc. I'm sure you wouldn't get very much business for stuff like that since you actually have to go in the house, but it might get you a few extra bucks.

First off for any business you want to make sure it is something you will have a passion for and two is there a market for it? For me it was easy because the business I am a part of was already established and I joined up with it and I have a passion for it since it is helping my oldest son to be rash free. So I love to share our story and hope to find other people who it may help. If you have a passion for picking up dog poop (and no shame in that) and there is a market for it in your area go for it. You could start off by calling around to different housing communities and check with them to see if there is a problem in their neighborhood and if they would hire you to do that.

M.,

Let me ask you this - when you was a kid, did you envision picking up dog poo to make you happy?

Don't get me wrong... I know that times are tough, and you have to do what you have to do in order to make a living and pay your mortgage. I like Jaimee K's answer - and take your service above and beyond what other poo-picker-upers do. Add some valuable services. Perhaps you can add things that have to do with the lawn like: week pulling, weed-n-feed, and watering the lawn. Or, you can center your extra services around the dogs, like: bathing, walking, and nail cutting (if you really know how to do that). In this economy, people really need a reason to hire you. Pick the first 2 customers and tell them you will perform duties for free for the first month (or 2 weeks) in exchange for their testimonial. Offer word of mouth incentives, discounts for extended contracts, etc.

Okay, with that being said, I am with Valerie on living your passion. Use the poop industry as a "right now" income if need be - but don't take your eyes off of what you really want from life. What message do you have to share with society? What service can you offer that will ultimately change peoples lives? What seems so natural to you, that you don't even notice how well you do it? What have you been through in your life that you can teach others about? You have this within you - each of us do. It is when you pursue your passion that you will be fully alive and flourish. Abundance will be all around you.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing! :)
