Hello, I am trying to find a good book that I can read to help me make better disicpline and structural decisions for my son who has ADHD, IED, and a couple others. I don't want my child to think that I'm always on his case about everything - and for everything he will get punished...because I assure you he does not. Thanks for all advice!

I've liked "How to talk so your kids will listen and How to listen so your kids will talk" and "1-2-3- magic". At my kids age, (4, 6) I'd have to say 123 has been more successful but "how to talk" was more of an eye opener in terms of respecting your childs feelings, letting them have an opinion etc....

Hi C.,
I can't recommend "Boundries with Kids" enough. It is a Bible based book and has great tips for reinforcing good behavior and how to handle poor bahavior. I LOVE the part that gets your kids to pick up after themselves... I have an 18 gallon tub under my coffee table and if they leave their stuff out I "impound" it and they have to pay 25 cents per item to get it back. The first 2 weeks I collected $34 for charity and it was and eye opener for them about how much stuff they had been leaving out. My husband even had to pay to get his wallet, keys and sunglasses out. We then sat down as a family and decided where to send the money we had collected. So they also learned about giving to others. This book has changed the tone in our house, and it may help you too!

C.,

This book doesn't address specifically children with behavorial problems such as ADHD & IED, but it is EXCELLENT advice for ANY parent with ANY child. It gives solid, biblical advice that may not always be popular, but is definately tried and true. Since you mentioned a belief in God, I think you'll find this book extremely helpful and insightful. The book is called "Dare to Discipline" by Dr. James Dobson. I've read it once already and will most likely read it again and again. Actually, I've read several books by James Dobson and would recommend any of them. Check it out!

Hi C.,

I would recommend anything by Dr. Sears. He has a book called the ADD book which is excellent, also the Discipline Book, The Successful Child. What I love about his books is that he is always looking for the positive for every personality. He offers alternatives to all situations and all discipline is approached positively and with respect.

Hope that helps.
