Hello All
Can anyone tell me a good workout that will help me lose about 50 pounds. I just joined a gym and I worked out everyday for 2 weeks, now I am getting the "I don't wanna go to the gym" blues. I will go if I know I need to for example go in and do 1 hour on the treadmill for the day and I'm done...I am not the athletic type but I hear running is the best way to get and keep pounds off...any ideas? I am willing to put in the work but I want to eat what I want too...I know I'm asking for a lot. I appreciate any feedback.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the advice...it has really motivated me. I can't believe how many people have felt or feel the way I do. That in itself has motivated me. I have decided to try out some of the classes offered at my gym, and also ask about circuit weights. In addition, I have put myself and my family on a low calorie diet...we are going grocery shopping to restock our house. Thank you everyone for your advice...I'll keep you posted!

Hello everyone, I posted this a while back and have since started a diet called Fat Smash Diet...after 4 days of the diet I have lost 4 pounds. This is definetly a diet to change your lifestyle not only how much you weigh. I also started a blog to help keep me on track and for other friends and family to check in and help me. If you want the link fee free to e-mail me. Thanks for your help again!

Hey S., Consistence is the key to exercise. Start out with 15 or 30 min until you begin a regimen. Getting started and doing it consistently is the hardest part. I found that Tybo is the best for toning and I like to use an elyptical trainer at the gym it burns alot of calories in a short amount of time for cardio. It is best that you find something you enjoy doing such as aerobics, running, brisk walking so that you will stick with it. Just remember anything is better that nothing.

I would say you need to throw out your scale and work out at least 3 days a week don't do too much or you will get burnt out! I am the same way. Cardio is great but it would be really benificial for you to do some strength training as well.

First take someone with you. Have a friend who wants to get into shape as well. That way you are making your self accountable to another person. When you get to the gym, talk to one of the people who works there. Sometimes there are free consultation with a coach who can explain to you the different options for you body type, although it is said that running is best for weight lose, it is not always best for some body types as well as some peoples physical conditions. I for example have a torn ligiment in my calf that keeps me from walking or running for extended period of time. So as a trainer or a coach, they are actually trained for this situation.
As for the not wanting to give up the foods, you don't have to, moderation, as well as finding more suitable versions of your favorite foods will help greatly. I have learned to cook for diabetics because my mother is one and my neice is border line, so being in the chef field I have a desire to find ways to make things that are sugar free and create things I know that they both like and enjoy.
But it is all according to what you desire. I have found that most people are beautiful the way they are.
;O) Just a thought.

Running is great and will help slim down and get stronger, but diet is important just as much. you don't have to give up sweets or anything, just keep an eye on content. eat whole wheat, unenriched flour, no trans fats (hydrogenated oils) this gives you the "spare Tire". I cut out trans fats a year ago, I was size 16 10 months after giving birth, now I am a 6!! I thought the day would never come, but I feel so great and it is so easy! It means cutting out most fast food, unless you go for salad or a place that no longer uses trans fats, which are becoming fastly more popular. We eat a lot of organic and natural foods. It can become costly, but as demand grows, the prices drop. Ingles in Athens has the most competitive pricing around and you can get cupons from Earthfare that can be used at other places. Kroger andPublix also have a good selection, just a bit higher in price, even Bell's carry oganic milk! it's worth it for your and your family's health. It reduces the risk of many diseases and obesity, heart disease, diabetes. the huge thing is peanut butter, unless natural or organic it usually is all trans fat! skippy makes a great tasting natural creamy no need to stir that sells for a mere $1.99! I didn't up my workout at all. I run 20 min twice a week on a treadmill during naptime. I could stand to be more toned, but the weight is gone. also I do not drink soda, except as a special treat. I drink a lot of coffee and teas, but mostly water and milk! I also try not to use any RX drugs. a lot of side effects are weight gain. I have an IUD, which has proven to be the best birth control, with the least worries and side effects. as with any change it takes time and commitment! you can do it!

S.,
After the birth of my son I started doing The Firm. I have a tiny living room and very little free time and this workout has proved to be extremely effective in getting off my excess weight and keeping it off. It is a tough workout with a step, weights and aerobics all in one. BUT, they make great suggestions throughout for 'beginners' and I found it easy to keep up even when I was very out of shape. I first, you will do the tapes without weights and even without the step - just do what you can and do it often.
I lost 45 pounds in six months without following a strict diet. Eat whatever you want in moderation, give up all soda, drink water and do this workout regularly. You will be thrilled with the results.

I found a website called www.fitday.com where you can track your calorie intake and keep a journal. You just type in what you eat and it calculates it for you. The best thing to do is try to find a workout partner so you can motivate each other.

Hi S.!! Well, you said that you like to eat what you want have you thought about when you want?? I know weird crazy question...But there is a thing called the reverse diet...You eat dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner..More like eat like a king when you get up, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner...I just started, but the person who told me about it lost 17pounds in 2weeks.(no exercise)..Just go to your search engine and type in www.reversedietsolution.com ...The woman that came up with it lost 172lbs in 9months and has kept it off for years...Keep up with the treadmill, it's the best exercise you can do...My husband loves doing this diet...He said he had to look at his watch before he realized it was time to eat lunch, and he is usually starving to death by 9am and eats all his lunch before lunch time and is hungry all day...He loves eating like this...I am having a hard time eating dinner food in the morning but I think that I will get the hang of it...Good Luck S...

Dear S.,

Hello! I completely understand your frustrstion with losing weight since I had 40 lbs to lose after the birth of my son. The things that work for me are the following 1. WATER - I can't not even begin to explain how much water I drink! I try to drink at least 8 cups of plain filtered water a day and if I need to add some flover to it then I mix up some Crystal Light or drink some plain unsweetened tea. This way I'm not drinking my calories for the day. 2. Please stay a way from processed foods. They have so much junk in them (ie chemicals and high fructose corn syrup) that our bodies are not made to break down. A good book to read is Ultra Metobolism. 3. Another thing that I really enjoy are Lara Bars. They are all natural and have all kinds of nutirents and vitamins but they taste like a candy bar. They really help me through my sweet tooth cravings. 4. Last but not least, I like you, was running everyday but not dropping the weight and getting very bored with it, so I started taking the free classes that my gym had to offer. At first I felt a little silly since I was doing step aerobics and other cheesy 1980's stuff but it really worked! And, I have even made other mommmy friends! At some of the LA Fitness gyms, they have a babysitting service. I go to the one at the Ansley Center in Mid-town (Atlanta) and am very pleased. I'm not sure where you are located but you may want to check it out. GOOD LUCK and hope that your able to find a routine that works! M.

Actually power walking is much better than running. It has less friction on your knees as well. Try taking some of the exercise classes at your gym if they have them. You can meet people and help motivate each other. Works for me! But unfortunately you cannot eat everything that you want. Wish that could work.

I totally know what your going thru I also am in the same boat although I just started the slimfast optima diet and girl it is awsome the web sit gives you a detailed outline of what to do I am NOT a dieter I have NO patience but I can do this I instead of the dinner though I just eat a lean cuisene meal to take out the temptation it goes like thi shake, 40 -100 cal. snack, shake + (for instance) a half a turkey sand., 40-100 cal. snack, lean cusine, and then I do a 40 -80 cal. snack I am loving it! As far as the excersizing does your gym have circuit weights? if so ask them for a print out of all of them and go through doing 10-20 lbs on each circuit for upper body then 40- 80lbs. for lower. It should only take you 20 -30 min. to get thru it then just hit the treadmill for 20-30 mins. and just go 4-5 x's a week alternating days. If you don't have circuit weights let me know I have an alternate work out in which a trainer set up for me a tolal body work out that I alternate between the circiut weights. Good luck hun!

Hi S.
I am not a trainer or a nutritionist, but I have a degree in exercise sports science and more importantly had to lose 80 lbs after the birth of my first son. I was very much like you wherein I would workout for hours, but then come home and have ice cream after dinner. I thought I earned it and I deserved it after my hard work. Unfortunatly, after months of doing this, I wasn't losing any weight and I didn't understand why. I decided to get serious and spend the money on a trainer. What I learned was that if you take a look at the calories burned on your treadmil after an hour, you may have burned 250-350 calories - or less depending on how hard you work. You can consume 250-350 calories in one candy bar or one hamburger and then you might as well have not worked out at all. You won't lose any weight. Typically people fall in to a habit of OVER eating because they exercised. If they didn't work out they might have had one scoop of ice cream but because they trained for an hour they justify having three. They end up gaining!

If you really want to get serious about losing the weight I would recommend getting a trainer or a nutritionist to learn the keys to weight loss. But a few key learnings are 1.) Food determines weight loss. You can excercise all day long, but if you are not cutting calories and eating the right foods you will never lose weight. 2.) Exercise is vital but you need to be sure you are doing the right things. An hour on the treadmil everyday will not do you any good. To lose weight you need to have a combination of aerobic and anaerobic activity - cardio (running or fast walking) and weight lifting as an example. As a non-athletic person it is certainly not something you should just be able to figure out on your own. Enlist some help. If you can't afford a trainer get some workout books. Create a training schedule and stick to it. 3.) Tell everyone you know your goal. It is a lot harder to fall of the wagon when you know that everyone is cheering you on and waiting to see the change. 4.) Get a training partner. You can't skip if there is someone waiting for you to show up.

Just remember you can do it! It just takes hard work and dedication. It will not happen over night, so don't get frustrated. Healthy weight loss is only 2 lbs a week. At the end you are going to look better, feel better but most importantly be around longer for your daughter and be a great role model!

Good Luck
V.

I would try an elliptical machine. When I wanted to lose weight I first started with the treadmill, but no matter how much I want to be, I'm just not a runner. I love doing the elliptical machine. And I always make a playlist or a CD with music that makes me want to push myself. Another thing that helps me is skimming over a magazine. That way I'm not looking at the clock wondering how much time is left until I can go home! :) Alternate too. When you get bored with a workout, try another machine or if your gym has any classes, try out one of those. They really work! Good luck!

You are not going to lose any weight unless you change your diet. cut out things like High Fructose Corn Syrup, Margarine, hydrogenated oils, Enriched Flour, sugars. And then go to the gym everyday and do the elyptical and or the treadmill. You use more muscle groups on the elyptical. You need to sweat for about 20 minutes and it takes about 20 minutes for that to happen. So you need to stay on there for at least 30-40 minutes. The more muscle you build up, the more fat you will burn. This comes from experience. Ihave been doing it for about 6 months now and I have lost 4 inches in my waist and hav e3 more to go to be happy. Good luck.
The diet I use comes from a book called You on a diet. by Dr. Oz

going to the gym is great BUT it needs to be combined with a change in your eating habits to have any real affect. I lost a lot fairly quickly by:

walking 10-15 min, 45 min on the eliptical trainer (added other exercises to tone up well after I was on my way...

I allowed myself to eat anything I wanted but portion control was an absolute -- get out those measuring cups! I wrote down eveything I ate, it's calories, and portion size (if I couldn't figure out the calories I didn't eat it.) Even a stick of gum's 5 cal. count! 1600 cal/day was absolutely it for me for the day! Lost 154# in about a year with no drugs, gimmicks or fads. Try Volumetrics -- great book and has lists of calories that really helped.

Good luck!

Do the people at the gym offer any free consulations with membership? I also have trouble with staying motivated. At the gym I'm more likely to work out for a full hour if I take a class. Have you tried running at all? I've been an on and off runner for years and I think it's a good way to stay is shape. I've recently decided to sign up for a 5K once a month in order to motivate me to stick with it. You can go to active.com to find one in your area and sign up. Don't worry about how "fast" you are or even if you can finish it. There are all ages and body types and fitness levels at these things, and they can be fun. It might give you a goal to work toward.

Hi S.!

I didn't see your request or I would have responded sooner. I can relate to your story as last year I was in the same scenario. From June 2006 to Nov 2006 I went from a size 12 to a size 4 in jeans/pants.

As you have kids and as you age, your body changes and that shows up in extra inches if we aren't careful. Most of us it sneaks up on us and we don't even realize it until we are stuck and can't figure out how to get back to where we used to be. What a challenge, right?

Last year I learned about a new weight loss program and I heard and saw the results some other people were getting with it, so I was excited to try it. I started using it towards the end of June. Anyway, I started losing weight from the first week.

I also incorporated weight training and cardio exercise 5-6 days a week because I entered a "body transformation" contest, so I wanted to increase my chances of winning and making a big impact in my before and after photos for my 1st 60 days.

This page has a bit about my story with pictures:
http://www.globalsuccessmentor.com/stack-body-weight-loss... I have lost more weight since my "after" shot and haven't done a new one yet since it is cold outside and that is where I did my photos :)

I highly recommend getting a copy of the book "Body for Life" which has some really great information about how to eat right, how to do the weight training exercises and become a "fat burning" machine instead of "fat storing" machine.

If you were to hire a personal trainer, they are going to tell you that you can't just do cardio to reach your goals, they will also encourage you to lift weights. You didn't say exactly what you were doing when you worked out at the gym, so we don't know specifically what you are doing. Maybe you are already doing the machines with the weights, but doing them properly also is very important as well because if all you are doing is going through the motions but not actually getting any resistance, then you will not benefit from it. Also when you are doing cardio exercise, you need to reach a certain heart rate or rpm's to have an effective cardio session. I see many people at the gym barely putting forth any effort and that doesn't accomplish much.

Now of course you may have to start out slow and work up to increasing your endurance and stamina. It is highly recommnded that you seek a doctor's advice or get an assessment by someone who is qualified to do so.

you really might need to go on a diet for a while. i haven't been working out, but i have three meals a day and only 4 oz of good meat, only two apples a day and some sugar free crystal lite fruit punch, all the broccoli i can eat no corn or potatoes, and one carrot a day and a protein bar, and soup. and i can replace any meal with a healthy choice meal, I’ve lost 2 pounds a week and my doctor says that’s a healthy amount and if i were to lose anymore i would add it back real fast if i went back to my normal eating habits. so go on a diet for 5 months and you should be good.
