I went to the dentist yest for the first time with my daughter, who just turned 2, the dentist said that she needs to have her 4 frint teeth pulled due to decay and poor enamil, she told me the reson my daughter has such bad teeth is due to several medications she was on,ishe told me its a common thing that it happens to many kids for different reason one being from a bottle or medication, i really dont think the bottle caused this to my daughter teeth she has been off the bottle for more then a year now, im very worried about her getiing this done, they will not be putting her to sleep, but im still very worried please let me know if you have gone threw this or if someone you know has, i walked out of the dentist crying so worried for my child, she has been threw 2 surgerys already it always seems like somethng i fell bad for her, the dentist told me it was my fault her teeth are this way but i still feel guilty..please help

What can I do next?

First, get a second opinion from a pediatric dentist. If he/she concurs with the initial assessment check the following links to be sure you're all on the same page and work together to make this the least painful/traumatic for your child.

http://home.flash.net/~dkennel/bottle.htm - decay info

http://home.flash.net/~dkennel/sedation.htm - sedation info (it seems general anethesia is the norm)

Hi B.,
My oldest son was 3 and had to go through dental surgery. He had 4 teeth pulled, 2 root canals and quite a few fillings. To sum it up, we went to Bostons Childrens hospital and had a 4 hour surgery. He also had problems with having thin enamel on his teeth.
I am curious where you are taking daughter for this? Is it a pediatric dentist? If not GET ONE ! They deal with children everyday and will make the experiance as comfortable for you and her as possible.
Dont feel guilty! Some kids just have thin enamel, the cause sometimes is not known, and it is easy for a dentist to assume.
Good news is.... she will get new beautiful teeth once she gets older. It is better to get them out before they effect her permanent teeth underneath.
If you have any other questions, just let me know. I would be glad to help!

Hi , my little sister is eight and actually had this done when she was two. When she had it done the dentist said all she needed was a novacaine. it went very badly because they did not giver her enough. So when my sister needed it done again ... my mom insisted she got a general anastesia. With this she did great. I had 4 teeth pulled when i was about 12 and they gave me a gel on my gums and then the noacaine , I never felt anything but where she is young I would just insist in her having more than a novacaine.... shell be fine awake but get her something stronger where you and the dentist know it is working and that will relax her so she doesnt get scared. Remember youre the mother and you have every right to insist they do everything to make this experience okay for you and your daughter! Good luck ...

When my girl was 11/2, she fell, hit her mouth on a hard wood floor, and pushed her left front tooth backwards. The tooth moved forward on its own and stabalized, and then when she was almost 4 she was knocked forward by my dog, hit her mouth on the leg of a desk, and loosened both front teeth on the top. I brought her to the dentest the next day (she had her first appointment scheduled for hte following week) and he took x rays. he told me that she needed the top left tooth pulled out, because an injured tooth is like a donated organ. Sometimes the body rejects it, and her body had started to eat away at the root, causing half of the root to disappear. Her tooth would never be able to stablize itself! He also said that the x rays showed the damage, and the following week when she went to the appt she had, he would have wound up telling me it needed to go anyway. (at least seh didn't actually lose the tooth because of my doggie!)

She came back for the regular appt the following week, and that was when they pulled the injured tooth. She was awake, and did fine. the only time she cried was when they used the vacuum thingy to suck out her saliva. She didn't like that one bit. The actual pulling of the tooth didn't bother her at all!

She is now 6, and her adult tooth finally came in! That is probably the worse part of the whole ordeal. She has lost other baby teeth, and the adult teeth didnt bother her when they came in, but the gum where her pulled tooth had been healed over, and so her adult tooth was breaking through completely healed gum. It was like teething again with that particular spot. She did well, though.

hope my story helped you a bit! I wouldn't be overly freaked out about it. I would suggest thast you take her to a dentist she is completely comfortable with, though. Good Luck.

I have been putting off bringing my almost 3 year old son to the dentist..he fell about a year ago and hit his 2 front teeth..they didn't get lose but they have started to discolor and I am really afraid they need to be pulled. Not sure if this is related to falling on the teeth or something else. Just curious, what color were your daughters teeth? Did she end up having them pulled and how did it go?

Both my son and my nephew had to have teeth pulled. My son was about two when they did it. Initially they said that they had to pull all four front teeth. In the end, the just pulled one and reformed the enamel on the others and they fell out eventually on their own. He had no pain that I can remember and I know he wasn't put to sleep. My nephew just recently had teeth pulled because his were coming in behind his front teeth. Also not put to sleep, and he was fine with it as well. He was very sensitive... so we payed very close attention to him and he was fine too.
