My Question on Rick Santorum - Thanks to Those of You Who Took the Time to Reply

Looks like someone can't stand an active discussion on this board, but I really appreciate all of you who DID take the time to read and reply to my question. Regardless of whether or not I agreed with you, I welcome lively debate and am thankful to all of you who are truly tolerant enough to engage in it :)

So, why are some political posts on this board allowed, but others are not?

There was so name calling against other Mamapedia members, and I don't think anyone was uncivil. So, what it is about my question (or some of the replies) that was too contentious for some MP members? Why can't we have a real discussion and a give and take on vitally important issues (i.e., the election of the most powerful leader in the world)?

Maybe MP could have a tab under which we CAN post political questions, because, yes, we are mothers and we come here for parenting advice, but we also come here as a way to connect with the broader society and to reach out to people of different viewpoints that we might not encounter in our everyday lives.

If someone doesn't like reading policical posts on this board, then don't click on something that is CLEARLY political from the subject line (mine was: "Why Not Santorum?") Was that not descriptive enough to let people know that if they didn't want to read it they could skip it??

What can I do next?

  • Add yourAnswer own comment
  • Ask your own question Add Question
  • Join the Mamapedia community Mamapedia
  • as inappropriate
  • this with your friends

So What Happened?

*One and Done* - You actually did reply to it, in quite some detail, and I had actually logged on today in order to reply to your points--but then it was gone :(

I am not going to waste my time reposting it, though. It is just annoying, so I will have the discussion with my Facebook friends instead.

What was the question?

I personally really like political discussions on this site, because it's very diverse, you get responses from all over the political spectrum, but people all seem genuine -- you don't get these professional political commenter types.

I understand that there are people who aren't interested in political discussions, and that's fine. If it doesn't interest you, don't click on the link. What bothers me is the implication that we're all so fragile or feeble that just the presence of a question about a political candidate would make us all crumble to pieces or something.

I hope a moderator is reading my response.

I can think of very few things that affect our vocations as moms/dads more than the political and economic climate of this country. Therefore I have no problem with the political questions, so long as they are asked in good faith.

I don't get why your question was pulled either.

The problem lies less with the name of the thread, and more with the content of what the thread in its entirety becomes. When the thread gets toxic, when people are calling each other out and arguing, when ugly words are used to describe people, the thread will go. There was one political thread where someone called President Obama "President Pookie". THAT is the kind of thing that will not only get the post pulled, but deep six the thread. It doesn't have to be about a president either. If people are flaming in general about someone, the thread will go.

This is not a political forum. The moderators like things to be "neutral". That is why these threads go. If people can keep them "neutral", the thread can stand.

One lady asked about the question that the lady deleted herself. I saw that one. No one told her that political posts weren't allowed. Several people gave the opinion that they wished she wouldn't post another political hot potato (thought they didn't use those words - it's the gist of it), because of the extremely nasty one about the State of the Union Address (complete with President Pookie) that had been removed. I have no idea why the thread with the question deleted was later removed, unless B's idea that they remove "wasted space" is the reason. By the time MP removed it, there was nothing left to talk about. So ??? I don't know.

Anyway, that's my take on this issue with political threads and why they are and aren't allowed to stay.

I don't recall seeing your question... I just want to say that the same way you say that people shouldn't click on political posts, I could say, If you don't want your posts pulled then don't post political ones.

Sometimes questions are removed because someone complains - but not always.
The site moderators decide what is a waste of disk space as far as they are concerned and they can and do remove posts at their discretion whether anyone complains or not.
The site is about parenting and familial relationships, they pretty much try to keep things on topic and they delete what does not fit.
There are plenty of other places to chat politics - and the discussions get nasty quickly.
I'm glad they don't allow a lot of it here.

I'm surprised your question was pulled. I commented on it and it was up for a long time. I've yet to figure out why some things are allowed to stay up and others are not. I guess it does come down to how many people report a posting -all of that is automated. I'm with you though -if someone doesn't like political questions (or any other type) -why don't they just skip it?

I did not see your question on Senator Santorum but I would not have had a problem with your asking a question concerning him and I don't see it as being irrelevant either since whomever becomes President impacts all of our lives.

I'm not a Rick Santoram fan but I read your post and the replies you got. I like a lively debate as well and why shouldn't we be able to talk politics.......not a childrearing subject????? Wow. I hope no one really thinks that. The state of the country is going to affect, not only us, but our kids and their kids. I agree with you. If the label is there, simply skip it.

God bless!

Hmmm...can you RE-post?
Would LOVE to answer any questions about Ricky!
Must have missed it.

And--yeah--basically it's the multiple personalities on here that get things pulled when it gets their shorts in a knot.
