My Drama Queen :)

My daughter has a low pain tolerance... she'll be 3 in Nov., and has never liked to be uncomfortable. She's also kind of a drama queen. Example, she fell down a half an hour ago, and now refuses to walk because her knees hurt. This is not an unusual occurance, this summer she crawled (yes on her knees) for 2 days because her knees were "hurt".

Anyway, it's frustrating because I end up carrying her around just to get stuff done. I hate to encourage it.

Suggestions are appreciated :)

So What Happened?

Thanks for the imput. I really only carry her when I have to... like this morning I HAD to take my 1st grader to school, so I carried her to the stroller. By the time we got home, she'd forgotten (of course). I'll have to try more tickles and goofyness rather than just ignoring it and walking away as much as I can.

I have no suggestions for you.....I have a drama queen at home too. I bribe her with princess movies and lip gloss, if that tells ya anything. Seriously though, whenever she tries to take her diva-ness to extremes I tell her to get over it. Like when she refuses to come to her room to put on jammies bc "she is so tired of climbing the stairs", I tell her to get over it. Sometimes I get really silly with her and she will completely forget what she's even whining or complaining about ;o )

Take her to the park. I bet she'll be instantly healed.

LOL, that is my daughter to a T! Except she's 10 now. Other people give me weird looks when she's having drama in public about how injured she is and I just look at her and say "get over it." I know when she's really hurt and when she's not.

Usually I just ignore it. When she was younger I'd joke around with her. I'd say "oh no! You hurt your knee, well let's just cut your leg off then" and I'd go get the Play Doh knife and come toward her. She'd start giggling. Or I'd say "oh, that's too bad you can't walk because I was going to the fridge to have an ice pop and you can't have one because you can't walk..." It's amazing how your kids can be "instantly healed."

A few times I have said "well, if you're really that hurt we'll have to go to the emergency room. I'm sure they'll have a shot to stop the pain..." I did stop that one though because I didn't want her to get an unnatural fear of the emergency room.

When all else failed I used to get out my "magic tickle fingers" which was a pair of purple gloves. Then we'd tickle away the pain and she always ended up laughing. Sometimes I still have to do that, and even though she's 10 now, some things never get old :)

Refuse to play into it. Ignore it absolutely & completely & it will force her to knock this nonsense off.

I have zero tolerance for this kind of stuff. My daughter is a drama queen also so she & I end up butting heads a great deal.

Last night, for example, I made plans for both kids to spend all day & evening this Saturday with family friends (who've also got a boy & a girl exactly the same age as my kids) because hubs & I have a wedding to go to. The daughter of the family is really more tom-boyish than Hailey goes for so she was mad that they'd be spending pretty much all of Saturday with them. After being told to stop stomping around, throwing herself onto the furniture & being horrifically bratty in general, I sent her to bed. For the night. At 7:30. She's 10 years old so this was an hour & a half earlier than the normal bedtime, but I showed her that her dramatic attitude will not be tolerated for more than about 5 minutes. She woke up this morning a little ball of sunshine, surprise, surprise!

will bandaids work? What if you take a squirt bottle with water and tell her it is doctor spray? (Or whatever "magic" sounding spray would work on her)

I have no tolerance for this either. I tell my kids to shake it off or I'll amputate ;)

lol It comes with the age. When my granddaughter was around that age, maybe even younger she had a thing for band-aids. I got such a kick out of it that I embroidered her a shirt with a band-aid on it and the words "Baid-aid Queen" above it and wrote this poem...

The Band-Aid Queen
By S. Gose

Look around the house and you may find
Band-aids of every size and kind
Dora ones are what she likes the best
Looking for an “owie” she comes to test
She sucks in her breath, says a little “ow”
If there is a mark, she is most happy now
She wants a band-aid on each knee
Maybe there is a mark only she can see
Most likely it is all part of her pretend
No “Owie” there she has to mend
If her legs are full, her arms will do
If arms are full, dolly has “owie” too
Pulling them off, seems to cause great drama
This Band-aid queen is the delight of grandma!

I just read through the answers and can't believe how many mother's don't "tollerate it" or put up with it... I am a firm believer that our children learn from how we are and if we don't show compassion to our own children, how can they learn that they are more important then others, especially if you show compassion to other's who hurt themselves. Even the smallest bump deserves to be acknowledged at this age, even if it is just kissed better and a happy sounding "there you go, all better" afterwards. If you blow off their pain now, who will they turn to with real pain later? With your daughter and her hurt knees, acknowdge it, sit her on the couch with a ice pack or bag of peas and go about your business. She will know she can come to you when she hurts and will get bored sitting with the peas and it will get better much faster then if she is told to buck it up.

Don't carry that child around. Tell her if she can't walk, you will just put her back in the crib and she can stay there until she is old enough to walk again.

(That is unless she has a mental illness or serious health issues...which you have probably already have had checked out)?

If she's healthy....don't let a three year old run your house because it will just get worse as she grows older.

Blessings...,
