My Daughter Grinds Her Teeth in Her Sleep?

My, almost 2 year old, daughter grinds her teeth in her sleep. Loud enough that we can hear it in our room- which is just next door, but still!! My husband and I both do this too. I always assumed this was from everyday stresses in life, but is that why she's doing it?!?! I can't imagine that she has too many worries in her little life and I hate to think what she's doing to her teeth. I plan to bring this up at her 2-year well visit, but does anyone else notice their child doing this and have you consulted a doctor or dentist on this matter?

What can I do next?

My 5-year-old son does this-- my 3-year-old daughter does not--LOL. I have read that it is due to stress from the day and they do have stress. What I have noticed is that my son is a very anxious kid to begin with-- he is always asking lots of questions and has to know everything about where we are going and what is going to happen-- not ridiculous but he is much more aware of the world than my daughter. My daughter is care-free and lives on the edge. So, I guess my point is that it is connected to their personality as well-- I have been told they will outgrow it eventually and my kids started to see a pediatric dentist since at 18 months-- there is nothing we can do for it. If you really are concerned-- take her to the dentist for a check-up and discuss it with them. Best of luck

Hi L.,

My 5 year old has been grinding his teeth since he got them. We have been to 3 dentists, all of whom say it will probably stop when he gets his second teeth. He does it so badly, that his front teeth are almost gone. He hit the root in one of them and the tooth is dying, but it's a baby tooth. I guess my next stop will be an orthodontist! BTW, my 5 year old is the most care-free, easy-going kid you would ever want to meet! My high-strung 6 year old doesn't grind his teeth.

Good luck!

My 5 year old does this too. She has done it since she was little. She has seen the ped dentist every 6 months since she was 2 and I ask about it at every appointment. He says if she's still doing at 6 or 7 we'll consider nightguards for her. But until then he's not concerned. Interesting that another responder mentioned her son does this and he's kind of an anxious child- so it my daughter- whereas my more carefree 3 year old doesn't grind her teeth.
