My children are attending a summer camp at the school they will be attending in the fall. They have been coming home with moquito bites and now several chigger bites from the school garden. Is this a common occurence at schools in DFW????

What can I do next?

It's true, we're having a really bad season mosquito season this year. Deet works, although I'm a little cautious about its safety for use on small children. I've heard citronella works.

Unfortunately, the Listerine method is a very common myth, so don't waste your time and $$ on it--check out www.snopes.com.

You should have the school look into spraying garlic oil. We do this at home. It keeps the mosquitoes away for a few days. The mixture is non toxic. It is just garlic oil, soap, and water. The mixture is sprayed directly on the area where the kids will be playing.

It's a common occurence in the summer in the south. Off has a clip-on mosquito deterent now. You can clip one on your kids before they go outside. Good luck!

Mosquitos and chiggers are part of Texas summer anywhere you'll be in the grass. And, while they are thought to be uncommon in Texas, ticks can be a problem too. If your children are outdoors for any amount of time, liberally spray them with a bug repellant containing DEET. My 4 year old contracted Lyme Disease last summer and it has been devastating to our family. Protecting your children from disease bearing pests is simple, please take that easy step.

Don't know if it's any comfort, but I got chiggers from our shrubs when we first moved to Dallas. This was in a Lower Greenville neighborhood in close-in Dallas, so not even out in the "country"!

Yes. Unless they have bug spray on they will most likely get bit if they are outside during the day. Ask the school if they have checked for standing water. Also make sure they know about the chiggars. Chiggars like bunnies and rodents, the school might need to catch some of those little buggers.

Yes the mosquitos, etc are HORRIBLE this year. I get bit up by them (and probably chiggers too) every time I step in my back yard.
There are many natural bug repellents you can get at whole foods, sprouts, new flower market. Also, you can talk to the teacher and maybe he/she can do this---I have heard putting listerine in a spray bottle (and spraying it on the ground in the area they will be in) will help tremendously. These bugs either don't like or are killed by the listerine. It has to be the original (brown) one, not the blue.

Yes its common, make sure your kids are wearing bug repellant - it won't help with the chiggers, but it will help with the mosquitos. If you don't like the idea of Deet there are several options. The Right Start carries a mosquito repellant that is just citronella. It works well.
