Mirena or Birth Control Recommendation

Hi Moms,

I'm looking for a good birth control recommendation. Something other than the depo shot.
I'm interested in the Mirena but a little nervous of having a foreign object inserted inside of me for up to 5 years. I'm also nervous about the BC pill because I've missed pills in the past and ended up getting pregnant from that so I need something that's the safest for me and most effective.

Any recommendations and advice are more than appreciated.
Thanks Moms! : )

I have had Mirena about 9 months now and I love it! My periods got lighter each month and now they are just about gone. Keep in mind that you can have it removed at anytime. I have tried many pills, the patch and the Nuva Ring- this is by far my best choice yet! Go for it!

I had the Mirena for 5 years and it was the BEST birth control I've ever used. After 8 months I quit having periods and didn't experience any side effects. I definitely recommend the Mirena IUD! Good luck!

i just got the Mirena last month and love it. I was nervous but it was quick and easy....I felt cramping apon insertion but after that it was just little uncomfortable cramping for the first day. i spotted for two weeks and then stopped. i am currently on my cycle and it is just spotting/very light flow but has lasted more than a week.

I am sure once my body gets used to it i wont have a cycle for that long. i like that I dont have to remember to take the pill beacuse to be all honest i am not good at taking them.

Hi, I have had Mirena for almost 3 years now and absolutely love it! I've tried every pill form of BC it seems like plus the Nuva Ring as well and Mirena has worked best for me by far.
I did experience a little spotting and cramping when it was first inserted, but nothing I couldn't live with. I had a regular period the first 3-4 months, but since then my cycle has pretty much stopped. I do get a little bit of every 2-3 months that lasts about 3 days and it's VERY light. I've noticed that I tend to get one when I stress too, but still it's VERY light and I have no cramps! I would definitely reccomend Mirena to anyone!
My husband and I only have 2 kids together (as well as 4 kids from his previous marriage; they live with their mom), but we have decided to not have anymore kids... so rather than having my tubes tied, I'll continue with Mirena and in 2 years I'll get it replaced.

I hope this helps!!

I was thinking about Mirena then I had two friends get pregnant with it. What are the chances of that??? I just went with the NuvaRing and I love it. You should look it up when you get a chance.

Well, I have had the Mirena twice. The first time, between the bitth of my first and second child, it was awesome. Then, I had it put in again after his birth, and I GOT PREGNANT WITH IT! HA! Something to think about, I guess.

If you're worried about the IUD (which is fabulous and many women after less than 6 months STOP having periods) and need a nonoral option. I LOVE NUVARING! I am a nurse practitioner and work in an OB/GYN office. The Ring is great because you have 30 days of medication in it. It is a small flexible ring that you insert into your vagina for 21 days with a tampon applicator then remove for 7 days to have your period. It works great. The patch is another option but many women with dry or senstive skin don't do well with the adhesive. Both very cool optiopns.
PS NO BIRTH CONTROL METHOD IS INSTANTLY EFFECTIVE, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE A BACKUP METHOD THE FIRST MONTH!

No change in cycle...meaning continued to have no cycle..procedure done in dr's office...slight discomfort during insertion..take a pain pill before..some mild cramping afterwards and no problems since.

I use the ortho evera patch. You only have to remember it once a week when you take the old one off and stick on a new one. I have not had any problems with it but I have heard that some people don't like having something stuck to them. It is a 1 1/2 inch square beige sticker that you can place on your bottom, stomach, or sholder. I have never had any problems with it coming off during showering or swiming. It has been very easy for me to use.
