Milk Intake Advice

Well, it happened. My daughter (1 this week) just refused nursing this past Friday night and has refused every morning and evening feeding since. I'm a bit heartbroken and yet feel liberated too! Here's my problem, although she's a great eater, she won't drink milk/formula of any kind. She's a big water drinker but nothing else. I do add formula to her iron fortified cereal both morning and before bed so I know she's at least getting some protein and calcium but experts say she should be drinking 2 cups of milk a day. Any advice? This kid never took a bottle or paci and only water from her sippy or big girl cup, won't even drink juice. I'm heading back to work this week and will have to advise my mom-in-law, mom, and nanny how to get milk in this kid. I really appreciate all of your experience and have learned so much from this network.

What can I do next?

eventually she'll take milk. She isn't used to it. It is cold, out of a cup. I would keep trying. Plus, before meals when she is hungry-like 1st thing in the morning. My daughter still doesn't like milk w/ her food-but, in the car w/a sippy cup when we get where ever the cup is empty.

My daughter is 2 and still won't drink milk of any kind. She truly hates it, and gags if I try to give it to her! Anyway, her doctor recommended Pediasure. It comes in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. I blended it with a little ice, and she loved it. Sneaky me, she thinks that it is a smoothie, or a shake. Sometimes she won't drink that either, but she is always excited for yogurt. I would just make sure that you don't pick up "lite" or "sugar free" yogurt because it has harmful artificial sweetners and fillers that can do damage to little ones. Good luck!

I'm wondering if you have tried regular milk. If you are giving her formula since she won't nurse. She just may not like the taste of it.

My son did the same thing!! Shortly after his first birthday, he began refusing to drink anything but water. He's now 6 1/2, has never like juice of any kind, will NEVER drink anything carbonated, it's water, water, water. His pediatrician's advice to me was to make sure he got his calcium & vitamins from other dairy sources, such as yogurt & cottage cheese. His last check-up was just a month ago, and he's perfect.

M.,
My girlfriend, also named M., went thru this with both of her boys. She was also concerned about the calcium they would need. Her pediatrician reassured her that they could get calcium from many other foods. You can substitute cheese, yogurt, ect. for the milk.
No worries! Isn't that great? I know she was relieved!

Hi M.,

It could be a phase - if you want to keep your milk supply, try pumping some. Maybe she will come back around and you guys can enjoy a bedtime nursing to bond since you are now returning to work. (My little girl will be 2 on Sunday and she still nurses when I get home from 1/2 day at work and before bed).

But, it may be your opp to wean her too. If you go that route, that is ok too. My daughter would only drink water for what seemed like forever. She drinks milk now (sometimes I put in some "instant breakfast") or you can get her calcium in other ways - cheese, yogurt, etc.

Good luck!

M.,

She may just be going through a nursing strike. Most kids will not self wean before the age of 2. www.askdrsears.com and www.kellymom.com both have information on how to handle nursing strikes.

Hi M., First of all congradulations on the no pacifire. You may want to try adding a litle teaspoon of vanilla, in her milk, what I did with my first child to get him to eat something thst i wanted to eat, I would put it on the coffee table and I would tell him, mommy's going to go potty, now don't eat my apple while I'm gone, and of course he did, butit worked, and then don't be suprised if your baby will drink milk for grandma, kids will do things for other people, that islike pulling teeth for you. I used to be a kid like that. I would gag on plain milk. My grandmother attempted to force me to drink it only to be thrown up on. I'm not lactose intolerant and I"m not sure of any other reason... I just couldn't deal with it. Threre are other ways of getting the calcium... yogurt, cheese etc. I could tolerate milk with flavor so sometimes I'd have a banana smoothie etc but I survived. I still to this day can not stomach straight milk except for a little on my cereal or oatmeal or in coffee and tea.

My advice is that your daughter will survive just fine without milk if you find alternatives. Kepp offering it to her though because kids tastes change constantly..nextweek she may fall in love with milk all over again. Good luck.
