I've been having back pain for at least a month now and have finally figured out, with the help of my chiropractor, that it's due to my mattress. I need to get something that's great for low back pain, but that won't break the bank! Suggestions?

So What Happened?

Well, the general consensus seems to be Sleep Number. Fortunately, I won't have to be shelling out any big bucks just yet. We figured out that our bed frame was broken, which made the bed sag. So, we took the frame out, and the box springs & mattress are right on the floor. It's working wonderfully! I don't have pain!!! So, for now, I'm fine. However, when the time comes to replace this mattress, we'll definitely look into a Sleep Number. Thanks!

D.,

The best investment we made on a bed was the Sleep Number bed. Yes, it's pricey, but OH MAN!!!! is it worth every penny we paid for it. With the dual air chambers you can set the firmness to what you want, and your hubby can have something entirely different.

Our bed has a 20 year warranty on it, and the salesman was telling us that it will easily stand up to a grown man jumping on the bed, not just the kids.

Hope this helps,

D., I have a horrable back to the point where I was dreading to go to sleep each night because I knew I would toss and turn and wake up in more pain every morning. We bought a sleep number bed from select comfort. It is the best decision we have ever made. You can adjust the firmness. some nights I need it softer other nights I need firmer. It is wonderful to be able to adjust it however I need. and my husband can adjust his side to fit whatever comfort level he wants. the temperpedic and other memory foam mattresses take a while to re-adjust to you if you turn over and for a bit you are sleeping in a hole and as they compress they get hard. the sleep number bed was the best investment I ever made and they have a lifetime guarentee. I would check it out. good luck. J.

Well they are a pain in the butt to move around, but I have to say that I've found futons to be the best mattresses. That or extra firms without a pillow top. I like a very firm mattress. The best one I've ever slept on is one my dad got as part of doing some accounting for a client..... over 30 years ago. I wish I knew the inner workings to know why it is so good.

I don't have a good recommendation of where to find an excellent firm mattress, unfortunately. We got ours at a Sealy outlet that is out of business. It is about 85% of great that I would get if I had more money to spend, so not bad. Its secret is the individually wrapped coils. I'd recommend finding an outlet and then laying down on a lot and really getting a feel for them. Your son will find it fun! Good luck!

The sleep number bed has been very helpful to me. We got it on discount by getting on their mailing list by visiting a salesroom and signing up, and waiting till the end of the year close-out of old models. I hope you find something just right for you!

Did you ask your chiropractor for recommendations? some don't believe in using memory foam, some believe you can just put a board underneath your mattress to make it firmer... that would be cheapest if it works.

If memory foam is your answer, you may be able to buy it more cheaply directly from a foam shop, or from a discount place like Bed Bath & Beyond (or maybe even Costco/Sam's).

I think everybody's probably different in this regard. Some people need extra-firm; but an extra-firm mattress just about killed me off.

For the past year, I've been a happy user of a Portland-made natural latex mattress. It's not cheap, but should last 20 years minimum, and the one I had made for me was considerably less expensive than any I could find online or in catalogs.

It's sink-in comfortable yet supports my back perfectly, conforms wonderfully to my body and yields to receive hips and shoulders. (You can also get a firmer version.) It contains no toxic chemical fire retardants or synthetic smells. I have chemical sensitivities, so I just love that.

I also bought one as a crib mattress for my grandson, and his parents have since bought him a larger one. We're believers.

Should you be willing to consider such an investment, check out Mulligan Mattress in Portland for friendly, honest, personalized service. You will need to get a doctor to give you a prescription for a fire-retardant free mattress, however.

Hope your son's first haircut is a delight.

I would go with a Tempurpedic or Sleep Number. Only problem is the price! I sleep on an Aerobed. You can pick one up at Bed Bath and Beyond, or online. Depending on the size (King was discontinued) It's a great option.

We have a memory foam mattress. Not just the topper, but the whole mattress. I mentioned it to my chiropractor when I started seeing him and he said that it's a great mattress and that he was glad we already had a good one. I got mine from Costco 3 years ago and it was around $500 or $600. I don't remember for sure. It's a bit expensive, but completely worth it!

I bought a sleep number bed from Select Comfort and it has proved to be worth every single cent, and I purchased it for 50% off! As a nurse I lift patients all the time and subsequently had lead me to suffer from lower back pain and chronic headaches. Within 3 weeks of buying this bed my headaches were nearly gone and my back pain vanished. In addition, I was shocked by the quality of sleep that I got. I had no idea that I was sleeping so poorly, just thought I was still sleep deprived from caring for a 2 year old. I also want to share with you that my husband and I could not agree on how soft or firm we wanted our new mattress to be and after tons of research we happily bought the sleep number bed, without an ounce of regret! It was money well spent, considering we spend a third of our live in our bed! I told my chiropractor about my new bed and he too is an advocate! Good luck!
