Looking for Feedback on Sleep Number Beds

My husband and I have come to realize we really need a new bed/mattress. Ours is just not comfortable any longer and is causing too many sleep issues. We want to make a good sound investment but also need to be budget conscious. Our sleeping styles/preferences are very different so we were wondering about the Sleep Number beds that are advertised on t.v. He tends to be a stomach sleeper and I am a side sleeper. He likes a firmer mattress while I (think I) like a medium to softer mattress. Do you have a Sleep Number bed or have you tried one? What were your thoughts? What do you like and also dislike about it? Was it worth the money? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

What can I do next?

Hello A..
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. We have had one for about 4 years now and I cant stand sleeping in anyother bed. If we go to a hotel on vacation I dread sleeping because I miss my bed. My husband has his side on 70 and I like mine on 35.
We have the one that has individual matteresses so that if he wants to raise his side to read, watch TV or has a stuffed up nose I don't have to be elevated.
I also like that there is a LIFETIME warranty.
Good luck, I know its expensive but sooooooo well worth it in the long run to be able to have a great nights sleep.
Let me know what you decide.

We actually got a "used" one on Ebay. We love it. We both actually found that what we thought we liked as far as firmness was almost the opposite once we got it set up. It was also nice when I was pregnant because I could change it according to what I needed. I would totally recommend getting one.

Hi A.! My husband and I had a sleep number bed for 2 years and at first we loved it! Now its down it the basement not being used and we bought a new bed.
We bought the two chamber one which that sounds like what you guys are looking at. He needed something firmer since he has some back problems and I love a soft mattress! Since my side was softer he was always falling on to my side and sometimes depending on how soft it was you could feel the bottom of the chamber. It also made being intimate difficut. There is a foam piece that runs down the middle of the two chambers and around the bed. My suggestion is to go to the Sleep Number store and really check them out. I know there was a store inside Lakeside Mall and if thats not near you I'm sure your could check online for the nearest one! I hope this helps!

Don't know if you have considered it at all but my husband and I went with the tempur-pedic memory foam mattress. We love it!!! I have back issues and I don't get up in the morning stiff & sore. It adjusts to your body as you sleep including working with your body temp. I don't feel my husband moving around hardly at all anymore. Like Nicole suggested, go to a store near you and check them out. You can go online and look for a store near you. We bought ours from Talsma Furniture in Holland/Hudsonville.

Good Luck!

I have a Select Comfort bed and I love it. It's a better investment that standard mattresses. There's also the Tempur Pedic line. My only thoughts on those are how long does it maintain its firmness. I have gone through pillows made of similar materials and they've gone flat. Maybe that's just inferior material quality.
But the Select Comfort/Sleep Numbers have a longer warranty, better made, controllable, and I just think that for the money it's the best investment. Find a payment plan if you can. It'll pay off. Absolutely.

Hi A. ~
We bought our sleep number bed about 6 months ago and love it! We have the queen size 6000 series, which was about $4000. They financed us (I think no interest for 1 year) which makes our payment around $100/month. It has one controller that can control each side of the bed, which is nice because I work nights and sleep during the day alot, so when my husband isn't in the bed I found that I was rolling toward that side of the bed alot, but I can just push the button to firm it up some and don't roll any more...then my husband can fix it that night when he goes to bed.
good luck!

We have a sleep number bed and have had one for...let's see, going on 7 years? The best part is you don't have to keep buying a new mattress. People don't realize mattresses are only good for a few years and then they fall apart and are really bad for your spine, whether you notice it or not. With that line of thinking, you actually save money because you aren't running out to get a new mattress every 5 years. I am a pretty content sleeper so to me the actual number aspect isn't that big a deal, but to my husband, the insomniac, it has made a huge difference!

Just do it! Also, if you know anyone that has one, the sleep number people do a family/friends discount deal every once and awhile.

I dont know if its in your budget, but there are some hotels that have sleep # beds in their rooms. Radisson is one. A co-worker stayed where they had them, and raved about how nice they were. You can try it out before you buy one.

I LOVE mine!! My husband had it when we got married, so I inherited it- wouldn't trade it for anything!! But I have heard that you have to get the pillow top- my sister loved ours, so she got one and wasn't as happy. Later we found out she didn't want to spend the extra money on the pillow top- she is pretty disappointed. My husband has had his for about 7 years, and it is still wonderful.

We bought a sleep number bed about 3 years ago and love it. We bought the 7000 series king size bed that has the adjustable foot and head for elevation. It is great for us. I like a firm mattress and my husband the softer one. The king size we purchased was one solid unit vs the split in a king. This means if my husband wants the head part of the mattress elevated I have no choice but to have mine elevated too. That is one thing we would do differently. We don't agree on the position for elevation at all times. We also don't like the massage vibration feature it comes with. We never use and it will accidentally get bumped on the remote control and turn on - but outside of that the comfort is amazing. My husband has bad back issues and we tried memory foam, pillow tops, etc... before spending the money on a sleep number. Beware you need to use thier sheets if you go with the king size but the quality is amazing and well worth the price they make you pay. We purchased two sets and even with all the washings and wear and tear they have held up better than anything else. We have said we would never own anything but a sleep number again. Neither one of us has any regrets about this purchase. In fact both of my kids have been bugging us to get them sleep number beds - but that just isn't in the budget yet.

I have a sleep number bed and I swear by it. My husband and I are like you, we have different matress preferences. The Sleep Number bed has been a God sent! I sleep so soundly now, that if my 3 year old didn't come and wake me up in the morning I may never get out of bed. I used to be up constantly throughout the night. I would hear my son's every move. Now that we have a Sleep Number, I fall asleep right away, and sleep soundly.

Some words of advice... When you are purchasing a Sleep Number, they give you many money saving options. These options greatly take away from the affect. Make sure you have a bed frame (no mattress on the floor), you need to buy their box spring, and get the matress that has the control with the numbers on the screen. We went through a move reciently, and experienced some sleepless nights. We had the mattress and box spring on the floor, it was awful. We used a box spring that was at my mom's house while we were in transition, equally awful. If you are going to make the investment, I am sure you will love the bed! And, you can't beat the 30 day trial!
Hope this was helpful! Enjoy and sleep well!

Good Morning A.,
My name is K.. I would like to encourage you to make the investment of a sleep # bed. My husband and I have had ours since early 2007....love it....LOVE IT!! We are both over 6' tall and experience back difficulties if we are not careful. When we first married....many moons ago ;-) ....we had a traditional mattress....then about 14 years into our marriage changed to a water bed. Big improvement. Still room for more. As I said we did purchase a Sleep # Bed in early 2007 and we HIGHLY reccommend it to you. Side, back or tummy sleepers (which we are) are comfortable in these beds. Make sure you check out their financing. We choose 18 months same as cash and that was very workable into our budget. Trust this info helps you in making this decision. Have a blessed day and a 'peaceful restful night'
~K.~
ps....we love our bed so much that we encouraged our newlywed adult children to go this route instead of the traditional...they are very pleased with that decision!

My boyfriend bought a sleep number bed last summer. He really likes the bed and it even helped him to stop snoring. He got the one the has the massage has it so your head and feet can be raised. I highly recommend that option. I have had more problems with it, but it is mostly because I don't stay there very often and the people at the store will even tell you, that it takes about a week for your body to get used to the new bed and mattress and working with adjusting your sleep number. Also the pillows make/ made a big difference for me. My boyfriend had a really thick pillow at first for me and it was just too high, but then I tried a softer pillow and it was much better. They also have pilows at the store for stomach sleepers and side sleepers and so forth. I hope that this helps and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask, I will try to answer them. Good luck!

I have purchased 3 Select Comfort Sleep Number beds over the years. They are awesome. I highly recommend them. You can try them out at Laurel Park or Twelve Oaks. I would appreciate it if you told them that Barb Armstrong (Northville) referred you as I believe they offer a referral program. THanks - and enjoy.

It is worth every penny! We got one in the middle of my pregnancy and what a difference it made. I would recommend at least getting one that can change positions and has the massage feature. I cannot tell you how many times after a long day I just go in there and turn on the bed and fall asleep in total relaxation. Usually have stores in malls where you can try them out.

We almost bought one...then we stayed at a Radisson and tried one...it was awful! Now it could very well be that we had a 'bad' bed or that it just takes some acclimation time, but it was like sleeping on an underfilled waterbed. No support, the numbers changed when one of us got out of bed and we couldn't sleep cuddled together...which we like to do. It's worth another try I suppose, but we bought a Serta instead and are very happy with it. Memory foam Euro top...now none of our sheets fit! LOL

I would try it out first like suggested at a hotel that uses one. My husband and I have a Temperpedic and I LOVE IT! it totally forms to your body. My husband no longer has back problems. I got it 5 years ago when I was pregnant and it s amazing. Since then we have moved it 6 times and each time we fold it in half and tie it up. We unfold it and goes back to the exact same shape. Its totally amazing. Worth every penny

My husband and I bought a sleep number bed exactly one year ago. I was about 4 months pregnant when we bought it. From the beginning I have been uncomfortable. My husband on the other hand is fine. I figured my uncomfortableness was due to the pregnancy. Once I had the baby, I was still uncomfortable. Now I chalked it up to no stomach mussels and there a bad bad back. Ok, now that baby is 9 months old. It's not the baby any more. So last week, I called Select Comfort and told them that I feel like I am 90 years old when I get out of bed every morning and I NEVER get a good night sleep. After they ran some tests with me on the phone, they determined that I have a bad air chamber (I think it was an easy solution for them and a way to not replace the entire bed) so they are sending me a new one.

Anyway, please do what I did not do, and that is read reviews online. I have family and friends that just LOVE their beds, so I listened to them. But once I started having trouble I went on line and could not believe all the negative reviews. And about 3 weeks ago I went into a mattress store, and the owner told me that Select Comfort is closing a lot of stores because of a lot of problems such as mold in side the bed and poor back support (I will second that). I also feel like I am on a water bed when my husband gets out of bed. And we have double chambers. I can be set at one setting and he can be set at another. When I asked the sales rep about that, he said it is common to feel that. Nice to know that now!

Anyway, if you want my suggestion, I would recommend a Termur-pedic. I am so mad we did not go with this one. But if you still want a Select Comfort, I know a used one you can buy...lol :)

Hi A.!

Although I have never tried a Sleep Number bed myself, I know some people who say it's the best investment they ever made.

On another note, I don't know how well the actual Tempur-Pedic brand mattresses hold up, but hubby & I got a Serta memory foam mattress that's horrible! We've only had it for about a year and I rotate it regularly, but the spots where we sleep are permanently compressed. I wake up with terrible back pain every day. So if you decide to look at those as options, research them first too! Best of luck!!!

Don't buy one!!!! In our experience with our sleep number bed, it has been only about a year and the foam pad top has some sagging spots (compression) which I'm sure are permanent. I'm going to try and call cust service, but from what I'm reading, they won't cover it.
We are both very slim people- 5'9 140 lbs and 5'3 115 lbs, so I wonder how anyone bigger than us will do.
Also, the "numbers" don't stay put, and then we have to search for the remote thingy.

My wife has back pain so we tried the sleep number bed. It made her pain worse and I started having back pain from sleeping on it (I have never had back pain before). We slept on it for about 30 days and then tried to return it. Their customer service has been horrible. It has taken 5 calls for them to finally come pick it up. We would not recommend it to anyone.

My in-laws and my parents both have sleep number beds and they rave about it. Just on Saturday my husband and I were shopping around for mattrsses and found there was no way we could afford one. However, at Gardner White on Dixie Highway in Wateford, they have the Simmons Beautyrest air mattress, which is very similar to the high end sleep number (with two controls that show the "sleep number") on sale in their clearance center for 599.99, or 499.99 without a box spring (down from 2599.99). They had 4 left on Saturday night so you might give them a call.
