I am looking for a math tutor in the North Richland Hills area for my 8 year old daughter in the 3rd grade.She is a reading / vocabularywhiz (she just finished reading 734 page Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a "for fun" read) and is in the gifted program at Smithfield, but she cannot seem to connect the dots in math. Because she is not naturally good at math, she is resistant to working on it. We need someone who can make it fun for her (OK -as fun as math can be, maybe "fun" is not the right word, let's just go for "less of a chore".) For whatever reason, she is very resistant to rote memorization, but we sure need her to get up to speed on having ALL the addition, subtraction and mulitplication tables memorized (she has only parts of them memorized) as they are starting to do division. HELP!
If you are interested, I would be more than willing to help. I am a former teacher and only left teaching to stay at home with my kids. I taught 3rd and 4th grade, so I know the material well. I teach using a variety of methods so that I can reach any learning style. I have also done private tutoring in the past. You can start by asking the school guidance counselor for recommendations. MANY teachers tutor on the side. MANY teacher who are not SAHM or in another profession still tutor on the side.
Find and interview several, put her with someone she connects with and go from there.
I would stay away from the places like Sylvan, etc because they are in the market to make money. Tutors, on the other hand, want to make money but many of them tutor because they have a special talent to help children and don't look at it as a business.

Did you ask at your school, your middle school, or your high school? Usually there are numerous teachers that do tutoring right after school or they may do it at other times on their own. My son had trouble with Lang. Arts this year and I mentioned it to his teacher and she was immediately able to set us up with another teacher at our school that did it right after school. Also, just because they're middle or high school teachers doesn't mean they won't do other age kids, so check it out.
