Math Tutor for 1St Grader

I have a first grader who is struggling with math. I mean, basic math concepts like addition. She adds when she should subtract and struggles trying to add problems like 4+1. We've tried all we know at home and nothing is helping. Her teacher, while super fabulous, can't spend her entire day focusing on helping my daughter alone.

We're looking for a good, trustworthy math tutor that has the patience to get her where she needs to be. We can't afford much since I'm in grad school and my husband is the only income and is also in school. I prefer that the tutor come to our home about 1-2 times a week. We cannot afford the tutoring places like Kumon or Mathnasium.

Any suggestions are helpful, thanks!

I don't know of any tutor, but when I was in grade school we had a ruler taped to the top of our desk and that was how we were taught to add and subtract. We would put our finger on the first number, for example 5, and if we needed to add 2 the teacher told us to move our finger up two spaces to 7. This is how I taught my daughter to add and subtract. Visualizing addition and subtraction may help her. Good Luck!

You could try posting something at Collin College. I'm not sure where people post things like this at the McKinney campus, but I have seen people looking for tutors, babysitters, etc. have fliers posted on bulletin boards on campus. You might be able to get a college student looking for a little extra cash. Maybe you can also post at whatever college you and your husband attend as well. I just mentioned Collin College because it is in McKinney. I can ask some of my friends in your area if they know of anyone. I've tutored little ones before, but my kids keep me too busy these days.

what school does she attend? I taught 1st grade for nine years, 5 of which were in McKinney. I know that we always offered after school tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I would be happy to help. My email address is ____@____.com.

I'm not sure the cost but I see this tutor's advertisement often on her car (think she must live in my neighborhood)...

You could also call the local colleges. Education majors would probably love the extra money.
