K., I gave birth to my girls in july and i was still losing hair 11 months after they were born. i have very thin hair and boy i was thinking about wigs at the time :) i went for a physical and was going to mention this. so they did blood work first and then during the exam i didn't have to mention it. she did., she said i had grave's disease and that my constant exhaustion (i never told her), hair loss, heart palpitations etc were symptoms of thyroid disease.
and here i was thinking well having twins does this to a mom :)
so, i'd suggest do blood work just in case and if all comes back fine then yes it is still normal
good luck

K.,
Just a few questions for you.... Are you still BF? Did you ever BF? What does your diet consist of?
I think the advise of the prenatal vitamins is good, but some doctors will not prescribe for too long if you are not BF. Mainly because some of the vitamins are at higher dosage than your body requires and could be harmful to you at that dosage.
Lets talk about Multivitamin. You need to be weary of vitamins! First because of the ingredients like Artificial flavor, color and preservatives. Also, you could be wasting your money with the ones you are buying. Most vitamins on the market have a very low absorption rate. Make sure the vitamin is some form of a WHOLE FOOD source. Also make sure that it is not only a Multi, but also has essential minerals and nutrients. Through history it has been shown that our foods (whether Organic or not) simply just do not carry the amount of minerals, nutrients, sugars and vitamins that our body requires to stay healthy. This is why supplements are so essential to our health. There is a study that shows were they found Woman One A Day vitamins in the sewers and you could still read "One A Day" on them.
Now, I also suggest a Probiotic. Here is the scoop on that. This is how I have told my kids about it and what they tell others. Your gut.... is made up of good bacteria and bad bacteria. Probiotics are the good bacteria. Lets call the bacteria... soldiers. So, you have good soldiers and you have bad soldiers. When you take probiotics you are increasing the good soldiers allowing them to fight off the bad soldiers. This in turn helps with your digestion. Better digestion leads to better absorption of minerals, nutrients, vitamins and sugars that our bodies require.
The vitamins that my family and I take make your nails shoot out and the hair grow fast and quick. My little sister was taking Puritans Pride and ranted and raved about the vitamins to me for a long time, but I felt they were rather expensive, so I stuck with the Multi Vitamin/Mineral supplement that I was taking. January she had to under go massive reconstructive surgery on her knee, so she came to me asking for some natural advise for before and after the surgery. Because she was going to begin to purchase some of the products I knew about, she decided to buy the Multi Vitamin/Mineral supplement I was currently taking. First because I told her I would only charge her my price, second because it was cheaper than what she was buying ($40 for a one month supply) and last because it also contained minerals, essential sugars and other ingredients her's did not. She called me in Feb and placed another order and we talked about how impressed she was with the way her nails and hair was "growing like a fast weed".

Anyway, I hope this has helped you. Please let us know what solution you tried and how things went! Please feel free to email me with any questions, concerns, advise you may need further! Good Luck

My hair dresser recently suggested I start taking a supplement called Biotin which you can get at any health food or vitamin store.

I too recently had alot of hair loss. The balding spots were very noticeable. 6 months ago I started taking Nioxin (bought at a beauty salon) for thinning hair. My hair stylist also recommended me trimming my hair every 4-6 weeks, which i do. My hair has grown over 4 inches. It is very healthy now and thick.

All of my "pregnancy hair" fell out around four to five months post partum. I lost a lot of hair with both pregnancies, but everything went back to normal afterwards. Give it a month or two.

I would look into purchasing Nioxin, its for thinning hair and it might help until your body gets back to normal. It can be purchased at most hair salons. I would do some research online about it first but I'm guessing it would help you.

Good luck.

Have you had any bloodwork after your pregnacy to check for thyroid conditions? Some women develop them after pregnacy sometimes they go away and sometimes they don't, but it can be treated with medication. I had this after my daughter was born. Though if you are breast feeding you may not be able to get a idodine uptake test done to check and see if it is thyroid disease, or just a temporay thyroid condition relating to the preganacy. But I would see your doctor and have the blood test, it can't hurt.

I had the same problem. I would recommend like some other people said to get your thyroid checked. I already knew I had a thyroid condition long before I was pregnant, but my dosage had to be adjusted a lot after I had my son. Hair loss is one of the symptoms of thyroid issues.

I think the hairloss varies from person to person and child to child. I lost hardly any with my son but had a lot of hairloss after my daughter's birth. I think it is just hormonal and how long it goes on will depend on a lot of things. Mine didn't stop until she was close to 18 months old.

Hi K.,

I would suggest to you that you keep taking your pre-natal vitamins...It wasn't until I stopped them that my hair starting falling out. Even after 5 months, it can still happen.

I was pretty bald for a while myself, so I know how you feel. Eventually it comes back, it may just take a little longer than we like!!

Take care,

P.

When my hair loss didn't stop for over a year, I had my blood work checked. While my thyroid levels were normal, my estrogen to progesterone ratio was ABNORMAL. My doctor wrote a prescription for progesterone cream, which I take only on certain days of my cycle. The result is that my hormones are balanced, my cycle is much improved, my stress/anxiety levels are much improved (no longer emotional wreck!) and my hair is growing again! My hormone levels were as if I was perpetually early post-partum and never recovered. My regular OBGYN did not offer help with my problems. I went to see a gynecologist is also a nutritionist. In the Chester County area, I highly recommend Dr. Beninati in Downingtown.

With my first daughter, I was losing my hair for nearly a year. My second daughter was born in November and I'm still losing my hair as well.

I'm not sure how true this is, but a friend of mine said that when you are pregnant, you don't lose as much hair. Once you have the baby, you lose all of the extra hair from the pregnancy. Again, I'm not sure how true that is, but it kind of makes sense.

My son was born around Halloween of '04...I lost my hair for months after wards. I would say like 5 or 6 months afterwards. But it did eventually stop. Trust me you have plenty of hair....its totally normal. i used to be a hair dresser to, so I saw a couple of women with this too! If you continue to lose for a year after wards, then maybe let your doctor know!!

Hi K.,

I don't think anyone can actually say when your hair loss will slow down or end. I think it's different for everyone. I had my son in October as well. I currently have bad bald spots on my temples. I seem to loose massive and I do mean massive amount of hair for about 2 months after which the hair loss decreases. Which explains the bald areas. You're probably loosing your hair a little slower. I had my thyroid checked and blood work done. Both turned out okay. Luckily new hair is growing in for me but now I look like a Chia Pet! Hair loss is tough but count yourself lucky if you don't have any bald spots. I can't wear my hair up because the bald spots will be completely exposed. Your hair loss will decrease and then stop at some point. My hair turns up every where including in meals that my husband cooks!

Hey K., Listen it is just something mom's go through, since I had my youngest I loose my hair as well, it just falls out, breaks off. The only thing I can say is to try either gardnier nutreise, or frutose shampoo and conditioner, it can be the generic as long as it is the fruit one, I found that they help keep the hair on the head.

I had my daughter in the beginning of October and my hair is still falling out also. The same thing happened when I had my first daughter 10 years ago. I would say to continue to take a prenatal vitamin so you can replenish all the vitamins lost. It will pass it just takes time. I think my hair grew back thicker after the hair loss.

I lost my hair after my 1st daughter for 6 months, (like just clumps and clumps) and after my 2nd I lost it for eight months. Thank God for me I have extremely thick hair. It did eventually stop but what was a pain was when it grew back it was all these little fly away pieces until it was long enough again. And to be honest I asked my OB after the first time it happened and he basically told me to just deal with it there was nothing I could do about it. I know its not a solution but just me experience.

Hi! Just know that you're not alone!! I had my daughter in November of '05 and I still shed like a husky in the spring!!

I've asked several different doctors in several different fields and they've all told me just about the same thing.

One said 5 years for your body to get completely straightened back out. 2 said give it 3 years and if I'm still 'shedding' to check in with them. And another said every woman is different and each one's body handles the stress of pregnancy different, hair loss being one of them!!

I had my son in May 2006, and I was still losing a lot of hair around Thanksgiving. I think it slowed down after that. We had to use Draino in the tub once a week at some points because it was so clogged up with my hair. I have thin straight hair, so it looked pretty bad for a while. Now I have bunches of inch-and-a-half long hairs standing straight up at my part and in the front. My husband says I look like I have a mohawk. I've heard this is normal because women don't shed their hair while pregnant because of hormones, so many lose it after giving birth.
