I was just recently diagnosed with pcos which has been the problem with my ability to lose weight. I was wonderin if there are anyone else who happens to be dealing with this same issue and if you could possibly share any tips that could help get this under control. My doctor has put me on whats called metformin so it has helped. In one month i only gained a half of pound and thats good with thankgiving and all. Any tips would be great!!!

What can I do next?

Metformin is your best friend. Smaller portions is your next best friend. Exercising is the next step. Congratulations on not gaining, as not gaining is the first step to losing. If you don't already exercise, start. Walking is good, if you have no other options. Get good shoes. I walk a minimum of 3 miles per day and often walk more, or run besides. You will lose weight and then you will plateau, at which point you will need to step up the exercise, and this will go on the rest of your life. I think people with pcos were designed to be workers and need exercise like they need air.

Good luck. Try to focus on fitness and healthy eating habits rather than the scales, as the scales will often go up initially as some of the fat is converted to muscle. Hang in there, and know that the changes you are making in behavior are lifelong, not just toward a goal of losing weight, and good habits will be great gifts to give to your children, so they won't have to suffer the same heartache!

Wow! Its amazing that you have 3 children in spite of your PCOS! But I'm sure you've heard that. As for the weight loss, Metformin worked the best for me! I'd suggest following a healthy diet, and eat as little processed sugar as possible, and stay on the Metformin. What are you doing to treat your other symptoms?

For me, although I'm not PCOS, I am insulin resistant, which could lead to PCOS, which my midwife and her backup OB thought were preventing me from getting pregnant. The OB wanted to put me on metformin, but I really didn't want to do any drugs if I could avoid it. So, I got a blood sugar monitor and I watch my blood sugar very carefully, and I avoid white bread/flour, sugar, and potatos, but I do eat a lot of dark chocolate. The book, the Insulin Resistance Diet, really helped me get started, and it was simple. Since I started, I have lost 7 pounds in two months, and I got pregnant!! And I'm still losing weight, even though I'm two months into this pregnancy. I workout on the treadmill for a half an hour each day, and I weight lift my 14 month old son, but other than daily exercise and making sure I eat plenty of protein to go along with my carbs, the weight has been coming off without having to do anything too drastic.

OOOO... there are so many things you can do. I have PCOS. I don't have the typical weight problem, but one of my good friends has PCOS and does. There is a book called the "Infertility Cure" that is based in Eastern medicine and describes foods that PCOS people should stay away from. There are also lots of help forums online for PCOS http://soulcysters.com/

From my experience, I thought that Metformin was only to help PCOS with getting pregnant. I wasn't aware of it being prescribed for weight loss. You might do some reading up on that. I took metformin while trying to conceive (and clomid), but once I conceived I no longer took it (although some take it during pregnancy). My daughter is 11 mos. now, and I still don't take it. Hang in there!!!

Hi K.... I have definately been through what you are experiencing. My doc told me I have PCOS too, and that's why I had all the "spare tire" weight. I was on Metformin for about 8 months, and lost weight without even trying! It was great! It makes you feel not so hungry all the time, and is supposed to balance out your metabolism. I wish you all the best of luck with it!

hi. wow - I was diagnosed with PCOS before conceiving our first child & also took metformin. It worked great in combo with a whole foods diet. I haven't been retested since having our 2nd child and am now curious if this is why I'm also struggling to lose weight despite walking and doing yoga at least 4 days a week and hiking on the weekends?? Good luck to you and I'm definitely going to ask my own Dr about this the next time I'm in! K. C.
