Hi moms,
I'm looking for nice campgrounds as close to the California/Oregon border as possible. We want to meet family in the middle to camp without having to drive too long and the border is a good middle ground. We have a trailer but could tent camp too. The one must have is water, a lake or river, or the ocean. We've looked up Harris State beach in OR and Jedediah Redwood ib CA. Any feedback would be great. Thank you.
Thank you everyone. Jedediah is booked the weekend we want to go but we are definately going to try for Labor Day weekend when it opens. We are either going to stay at Prairie Creek or Lake Selmac. If anyone has been there, please let me know your thoughts. Thanks again.
never been but my husband often talks about staying in Jedadia Smith in the Redwoods. Not sure if it was just good family memories or if it was all that awesome.

I don't know if Gualala is close enough to the border. It's beautiful, park, with river and ocean, kayaking....
Oregon has some great state campgrounds. I don't know of any further south, but Humbug Mountain is georgous. You have a black sand beach (no swimming...powerful undertow), and hiking trails, and in the late summer wild blackberries to pick. I think Humbug is about 60 miles north of the CA border. Port Orford is the closest town, and Heceta Head Lighthouse is there. There is also a campground at Heceta Head, but it is almost always cold and windy there. There are many things to do within a short driving distance. Check out the Oregon State Parks website...most campgrounds have hook-ups and nice shower houses. My parents used to camphost at Humbug Mountain 20+ years ago, so it has been awhile since I've been there, but I love that area of Oregon. Have fun.
Prairie Creek Redwoods state park is also quite nice. Not too far from the Oregon border (weird to see highway signs saying "101 *South* to Eureka!) and a short drive to the Coast. Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Beach are short drives from the campgrounds and are quite beautiful

I have not been camping in the northern part of CA (only southern), but a few months back Sunset Magazine did an article about great camping spots all over CA. Maybe you could go to their site and see if you can look it up. I think the cover that month had a photo of a camper from years ago (you know the silver one that looks like a hot dog bun - LOL).
