Hi Mommies
I quick piece of info before my questions. My husband and I have owned 4 homes in just under 5 years and we have painted ALL the insides of each of them, so I have figured out how to be a great painter along the way. I have stayed with basically the same colors in each of our homes because we weren't there long enough to get tired of them. So now that we have moved again the house was painted in different shades of light yellow/eggshell so I haven't minded the colors. Now that we have been here almost a year I am getting the itch to start painting and add some color. So here is where I would love some help.
We have natural woodwork (that I don't want to paint over) that is close to a dark oak and a light tan carpet throughout.
So what colors have you done or seen that has looked good with this combination? I have done a dark soft red before and loved it, is red still in? I know shades of brown/tan look good too but what other colors seem to be in? What are some good places online to find what colors are in and any new trends in painting/decorating? I have a lot of black wrought iron throughout the house as well. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated to get my creative mind to work.

Thank you everyone for all the input. I have decided to go with "Vintage Blue" to pull the color out of my brown floral curtains in the front room. As far as the rest of the house I think it will be a wait and see. I love that reds are still in because I have a lot that matches it and the resources listed were all excellent suggestions. I highly recommend using the color tools on the Sherwin Williams site. My new favorite color is called Sociable, it's a pale orange (not peach) that almost looks beige but really warms up the room. It's also smart to try a small sample of a color before you commit to the whole room. I think Lowes & Home Depot sell them for about $2 a jar. Good luck!
Actually yellows are really in right now, but since you are getting sick of that I agree with greens, browns, beiges, etc. I am not one for reds in my own home, but with the right color choice I like it for other people. Blue/Brown combos are really nice right now too.
Every issue of Traditional Home features new paints that are in fashion now with designers. They span all brands and also give you inspiration. It sounds like your home falls in the traditional perimeters for decorating, so you may find flipping through the pages from recent back issues (library is a good source) will give you many options for picking out your new colors. Our living room is a color by Sherwin Williams called Heart of Palm and everyone asks about it. Its a bright, happy color that works well in all seasons. I love it, especially in the gray, bleak days of winter.
Soft mossy greens, pale peaches, soft golds. I guess reds and maroons and burgandys are still in as well.
HGTV.com has lots of great ideas. Also Sherwin-Williams.com has a color tool you can use and lots of suggestions of color combinations. Have fun...

If you want to make it more fun, do a little research on Feng Shui and go with some of the colors that is recommended based on that. It's fun and definitely a topic of coversation and might help reduce "too many options" to pick from. Good Luck!!
I know Glidden paint now has a list of top ten most popular colors and they also have where you can buy a sample of any color to try before you buy the actual gallon of paint. I believe Home Depot and Lowe's both carry Glidden.
We also still have a deep red in our family room. I love the color because it keeps it warm.
Also, I don't know if you receive Pottery Barn catalogs (if not you can request one), but they always have the latest colors in their magazines and they even give you the actual color name in the magazine...I have gotten a lot of my colors from there.

Our favorite color is Silver Sage from Restoration Harware- We've moved 5 times in 6 years and this color always makes the cut- it's been in our bathroom in one house, kitchen in another, this time it's in our living room. Depending on your natural light in the room the color looks grey, greenish or blueish. Hope this helps!
Pull something out of the woodwork. We have hardwood floors and dark furniture in our dining room, so I am going with an orange. Since I want a "lightness" in my living room I am going with a yellow. Get a bunch of paint chips and then pick the ones that you feel would look best with the wood. Remember Lowes (I think) has those small sample cans you can buy. Worst case, you have several stripes of different colors on the wall which will all be painted over when you do choose a color.

I would check out HGTV and bhg.com. You can look at a lot of pictures of rooms. Find some that inspire you and see if the color palette is similar to your home. Your starting point with the carpet and trim is pretty neutral and many colors could look good in your rooms. You also need to look at your accessories. If you are not looking to go out and start over then pick a new color from your pillows etc. that you haven't done in your old homes and see if that would look nice. I also agree that you should buy some of those little paint cans and paint some areas of the walls if you are unsure of the colors.It's all about having fun with color right now. Maybe not so much on the walls but with your furniture and accessories. Everything doesn't have to match and pops of color here or there are very pleasing to the eye. I've noticed that blues are really in right now. I've been looking online/tv for ideas to paint my living room and it seems people are taking a lot of inspiration from the sea. Don't think naval theme, but the light blues and turqoises of the shore and lagoons and such. I think it would look really good with the darker baseboards and the black wrought iron. I was playing around on Lowe's website and they have a lot of good ideas and this virtual thing where they have photos of different rooms and you can play around with paint colors. It is pretty neat and might help you come up with some ideas!
