A good friend of mine is waiting to adopt their first child. (They were approved and put 'on the list' just recently.) We started talking about support groups - which she knew of none. I suggested I would ask "mamasource" and let her know if I found anything out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would be happy to meet up with her or talk to her thru email or the phone, we adopted 4 kids from russia in the last 3 years, I am in the bolingbrook area near plainfield, I do not belong to any play group for adoptive parents, but a great idea.
congratulations to her!!

She might try looking at www.meetup.com. It's an interesting site where you can find all types of groups in your area that meet regularly. There are a lot of parent groups set up.

Northside Parents Network offers great support groups, however I am not sure the extent of involvement in the suburbs. They do have a yearly membership fee, but it is money well spent. In addition to the support groups, they have similar discussion boards as mamasource, disseminate information regarding schools, etc.
Hopefully they aren't waiting long for their little one to arrive!

You didn't say whether your friend is doing domestic or international adoption, but http://www.caffa.org/index.html
is an excellent resource and online community for Chicago adoptive families. There are also many organizations, support groups, yahoo groups etc that she can join depending upon what type of adoption she is doing.
Good luck

I don't know of any support groups but I would be happy to speak with your friend. My husband and I have an adopted 3 year-old son and were just this week chosen to adopt a second baby boy to be born in July. We live in Elmhurst.

I don't know of any brick and mortar support groups, but my friends adopted their kids from Guatemala, and they are part of a fairly large cyber support group. She should look online for some insight. The advice about meetup.com is good. My mom's group I found through there has three families who've adopted.

Hi,

My husband and I adopted an little boy in November. He will be 5months old on Saturday. We waited for about 15months. She can check out CAFFA (Chicago Area Families for Adoption: www.caffa.org) I did not really belong to any groups, but if she has any questions or wants to talk, I am available. We went the domestic route.

Thanks
D.
