Looking for a Good Steam Cleaner for Carpets

I am looking for a good steam cleaner. I have a 7 month old grandson, Austen, who is at my house on almost a daily basis. I also have an 8 year old, 55 pound dog who has the run of the house when Austen isn't here. I am very concerned about him crawling around on the dirty floor. I don't like carpet because I never feel like it is really clean even though I vacuum everyday. But I do like it because it is a buffer between Austen's head and the hard floor. Now that he is more mobile I am seeing more spots on my carpet; drool, spit-up, dripping bottles, etc. I would like to own my own carpet cleaner so I can clean it as often as I would like without having to pay someone every time. Money IS an object. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars, but I do want to get the best bang for my buck.

Thanking you in advance for taking the time to share your opinions! May God bless you in all that you do!

What can I do next?

Hello! I have used a Hoover Steam Vac for almost 7 years now (replacing it once). It will cost you between $250 and $350 at everyone's favorite store (Walmart) and my first one lasted for 6 of those years. For me it is perfect. I have two young children and two small dogs (One being house broke) and it comes with a hand tool attachment for small jobs and upholstry. I would not dream of living without it. For me it is the best investment ever. I hope this helps.

Hi M., I love my BISSEL PRO_HEAT STEAMER - costs right around $200. It's easy to use and cleans Great. We moved to a house that had hard wood and tile throughout the downstairs, the upstairs has carpet, but the kids (7, 4 and 3) are not supposed to take food up-stairs. I have been using it more for shampooing my carpet in my car lately. I sold mine to the lady that cleaned my house before we moved, and within 3 months, I went out and bought the same one again. I forgot how convient it has to have around. The kids are lucky to have you there to watch the babies.

I was reading the responses and I truly have to agree with Angelique. I too have switched our home over the earth-friendly, safe cleaners and personal care products. Our health is so much better - we are rarely sick - we have no chance of accidental poisonings - and my allergies have greatly improved. I shop direct with the manufacturer and receive wholesale prices along with many other great benefits. I've been shopping with them for almost 6 years and it's so fun because now I literally only go to the grocery store once a week - sometimes every other week. I avoid the supercenters completely - they drove me nuts anyways.

I've used their cleaners with a steam cleaner I rented from the store and it worked GREAT! I really need to also invest in a steam cleaner to keep here at home -- especially with my 4 kids. I enjoyed all the responses -- helps me to know which ones come recommended from moms just like me.

If anyone is looking for safer products, this company is the best. Feel free to call me ###-###-#### or email me ____@____.com.

My daughter bought a Hover Steam Vac and my daughter-in-law
bought a Bissell. I tried both of theirs out and I like my
daughters Hover the best, it has avery good brush action and it really sucks up the water out of the carpet which means
quicker drying time.I had my kids give me one for christmas.
They range in price from $299.00 to $399.00. I hope this
information is helpful to you.
P.S. my daughter also bought a SpotBot that really works well
when you only have a spot or two and it is real easy to operate, her two young sons know how to do it,they will grab it and clean up their spills real quick before mom or dad find out.

Hi M., I just bought a Bissell Pro Heat Sureshot 2X and I just love it. I only have 1 room with carpet, and the stairway. And a carpet rug. I bought it because I wanted a good way to scrub all the ceramic tile in my house. It is a multi surface cleaner, has a power head attachment and several others for upholstery, or spots, or whatever you need. I like it way better than the Rug Doctor I used to rent. It worked great on my carpets, took out all the stains, I have 2 small dogs and a busy 6 yr old grandson. I got it at Kohls, at a 30% off one day sale, plus I got another 15% by using my Kohls card. It retailed for $350. Mine has 12 rows of brushes, the most out there on the market. My daughter in law lives in an apt with a dog, child & cat. She bought one a step down from mine for $200 at Target. It has the pro heat, and 10 rows of brushes, and may do everything you need. She used it and said it works awesome for her. Good luck.

I have a Hoover steam vac like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-F5914-900-SteamVac-Clean-Sur...

I found one on sale for less than $150 at Big Lots. It's easy to use and has an upholstery attachment; the only thing I wish it would do is heat up the water. I'm just sure to use hot water from the bath tap. And I use whatever brand of carpet cleaner is cheapest; it doesn't seem to matter much. Just make sure you dilute it according to the instructions.

Good luck! Happy cleaning!

My comment is a little off subject but be sure not to allow your little one on the carpet for 24 hours after shampooing. Shampooing activates a bacteria and your little one could get sick from crawling on it. I read about this while being our church Nursery Director, 8 years ago so I don't remember all of the details but we made it a policy to make sure to shampoo when the Nursery would not be used for 24 hours.

I use to do my own carpet but just seemed to never find one that I really liked so I used Stanley Steamer. They do a great job and are in and out quickly but they advertise one thing and it ends up costing almost double. A friend of mine suggested I use the Rug Doctor which you can rent at HEB and other places. I tried it and it really does clean very well. Easy to use and it only cost $20 a day to rent. Of course you need to buy the cleaning solution but it was only like $12.99 for the bottle and I didn't even use it all. I didn't buy the spot remover or the other things they sell because it cleaned so well that it removed all stains and if I had a small stain I rubbed a little OxyClean on it first and then went over it with the Rug Doctor. Try it, I think you will like it. I did my entire house in about 2 - 3 hours. I also owned a Bissell and a Hoover steam cleaner and after a couple of years it got dirty and was hard to clean and then started putting streaks on my carpert. I eventually threw them out.
Good Luck.

Hey M. I would definately take precaustions on carpet cleaners. My sisters son had severe reactions to carpet cleaning and a story about a little boy being rushed to the emergency room after falling asleep on newly cleaned carpet with breathing problems stopped my family from doing things with carpet cleaning chemicals.

I use all natural cleaners one in particular that is amazing for carpet with an awesome natural smell that cna be put into a steamer. It even helps sinuses. My company has provided the products for cleaning green for years. If you would be inerested in hearing about it give me a call. ###-###-#### or visit the web site. www.saferforyourhomes.com

I have a Hoover steamvac silver. I think my husband got it at Walmart (for my anniversary...best present I ever got). I have kids ages 2,4,6 and I use it several times a month. It is easy to clean out, easy to use and not too heavy to push. You basically vacuum like regular, but use a trigger to squirt the water out. I can't remember what he paid, but it has worked great for the last five years and is still going strong!

Hello, I have a bissel carpet steamer pro, although it is easy to use, I don't think that it does a great job! I think you would be better off getting one of those with the scrubbing brushes. Also it is important to be sure that you get up all of the residue left behind by the soapy cleaner, it will actually attract more dirt and make the carpet get dirty again. I use just the steam where I can get away with it, and in the dirty spots I use the cleaner, I suck it up real good, and then go back over it with just water and suck that up good too! kinda like a rinse cycle if you will, so it doesn't leave behind so much residue! good luck!

The Little Green is great if you want something small that you can break out for quick little spot cleaning. If you're wanting something to do the entire rug at once, though, I'm not much help! :^)

Hi M.! One of my friends, let me borrow her Bissell steam cleaner. Its a big one, costs about $200 or so. However, the thing works awesome. And the cleaner you get to put in it, smells great. I'm sorry, I don't remember the model of the steam cleaner, but Bissell is a great brand. I hope that helps you out a little bit. P.S. I just saw the previous response, and that is exactley the one I am talking about. Yep, it works great.

I like my Hoover steam cleaner, and I've used it with great results for five years. It's never needed repairs, though I have had to have parts replaced. I asked the owner of the vacuum repair store where I get the parts his opinion, after seeing vacuums and steam cleaners come in and out for repairs over the years. He said the Hoover I have is one of the best there is, in terms of performance, repair history, etc.

You can also research online. Try www.epinions.com for reviews and consumer comments on just about any product out there. You can also check Good Housekeeping's Web site - they routinely test and review thousands of consumer products and are a good source for reliable product information.

The truth is, that for most carpets, household steam cleaners will only do so much. I still have my carpets professionally cleaned once a year.

You need to get an Electrolux. That is the best carpet cleaner there is. MUCH better than a Kirby. It is lightweight and you use it just like a vacuum. You add the solution with water in the small tank but there is nothing to pour out.You control the amt you put on the carpet then the brushes do their thing. Its dry in 15 minutes. It cleans wonderfully. The company will come do a demo for you and they will do regular maintenance and bring the solution to you when you need it. We took the carpet out of our whole house except for the master bedroom. Thats next...... (not a carpet fan either) . I use it now to do my tiled floors. We have had it for about 7 yrs. I don't remember exactly how much we paid, but it was around $300.00.They used to carry then at Lowes, but I think they might have discontinued that. They have financing available too. This is the guy I use. Give him a call. Dale Harber

The Oreck store! I used to own a commercial cleaning company and have used water and all kinds of machine's. Oreck has a fantastic, easy, waterless carpet cleaning system that has enzymes to clean up afte the kids, the dog, the husband....It comes in a little box, you pre-pray the stuff, shake the powder, rub it in the carpet with a brush (I use a floor machine they sell that dos everything) and let it sit for 1/2 hr to an hr. Then...vacuum. That is it and it it also decreases allergens that can come from mildew hiding under carpet. I believe it is like $30.00 or so but I absolutely loved using it and am going to buy some today. There are two Oreck stores or you can order online. I have two of their floors machines and they are worth every penny. With the waterless stuff, you don't need a machine since they give you a brush in the box.

I, too, hate carpet. Why not remove it and put tile, vinyl or laminate wood in its place (so much more sanitary) and find a large area rug to buffer your grandbaby's head from the hard floor. It can be vacuumed, shampooed, even rinsed outside (if you get an outdoor carpet). There is no pad to hold dust and bacteria underneath. you can remove it and disinfect underneath as often as you like. I'll never go back to carpet.
