Lactose Intolerant - Belvidere,IL

I have started my baby on some regular food (he does not like it) but i was going to introduce him to yogart this week. I have not been able to drink milk since he was born because it seems to make him cranky through my breast milk. I am concerned that he is lactose intolerant because of this and i was wondering what the signs might be and how quickly they might show up after eating dairy himself.

What can I do next?

My 3 year old stepdaughter is lactose intolerant. She cant have any dairy foods. We have to buy her Lactaid milk, or Dairy Ease. That is the only way she can have milk. If she drinks regular milk she will get an upset stomach, diah, and possibly hospitalized that is how bad she is. So I think i would try Lactaid milk or Dairy Ease. Although all kids are different. Well, I hope things go okay for you and good luck.

Hi M.!! I never had that problem with my kids, but I know a lot of lactose intolerant people will get severe diarrhea. But if it upset his tummy while you were nursing, it may still bother it. Not necessarily intolerant, just sensitive. Good Luck!!

I had the exact problem with 2 of my children. It did not turn out to be a lactose intolerance but rather an intolerance to cows milk altogether. I have had to avoid giving them dairy at all because they end up congested frequently with dark cirlces under the eyes and tummy upset. I believe it has more to do with casein but we avoid all dairy to be safe for now. We plan to try allergy elimination soon. My oldest with the milk problem is 3 yrs and my youngest will be 2 in Dec.

Good luck!

i have been here with my son. he went through so much to try to find out what was wrong with my son. He would have up to 15 bowel movements a day, and as you know diapers arent cheap, he would complain that his belly hurt, run fevers, sometime vomit. After many tests run on him i told his doctor that i wanted him to be tested for milk allergy. and sure enough he was. Having the milk allergy and being lactose intolerant are two different things. Milk is in everything even popcicles. And milk comes in many diffrent forms. Whey, casins, milk fat, etc. being lactose intolerant is you can have milk just in small forms. Talk to your doctor about having him tested. it is a blood test. then have them refer you to a dietition. They will tell you what is milk products and biprducts. My son has since grown out of it. But he is a bit lactose intolerant. i can tell when he has had too much dariy. I myself am too.
good luck and i hope that this helps.

Hi there. I am lactose intolerant and My brother is also. We have very diferent problems. I have a mild case so i can eat most of of what i want and once in a while i get huge gas bubbles and they are extremely painful I actually have a 6th sense about it. If im thinking about making say fettucini Alfredo a little voice may pop in my head saying nonono. My brother on the other hand has it a lot worse. When he was born (12 yrs ago) everything they gave him he through right back up. Finally they gave him soy milk and that worked. Now he has to drink "Lactaid" Its a special milk that has the enzymes so that he can have dairy. He just has to have one glass aday. Kids like it because it is slightly sweeter than regular milk. So, as i have rambled on, i would ask your ped. about the lactaid Milk and see how they would approach it of course he cant tell you with words yet how he feels.

Good Luck

If he is lactose intolerant you should see obvious signs. There will be excessive gas, spit up that is sour and chunky, and just in general uncomfortableness. If he does have an intolerance to this you might try soy yogurt. I have had 2 children that were lactose intolerant and had acid reflux (gerd). Just look for anything abnormal, usually their diapers will tell you alot of information! Good Luck!

M.,
Sounds like your son has milk protein intolerance. My son has the same problem and I have been avoiding all dairy since he was 2 months old (I am also breastfeeding). Most kids grow out of it by 12-18 months. Personally I would wait on the dairy until he is 12 months.

Most of the research I have read says that baby's should not have cows milk or cows milk products until they are 1, reguardless of allergies. If he is allergic, he could have several reactions, which could include, but would not be limited to: red, bumpy rash around his mouth, diarreah, cranky (from gas pain), red skin around his anus after he poops it out. Any of these mean you should stop giving it for at least a few months before you try again. If it makes him cranky through your breast milk, I would be concerned. My son was the same as a baby, and sure enough, he has a severe milk allergy. The things I told you above came straight to me through the city's #1 pediatric allergy specialist - Bruce Phitze.

Good luck!

I'm lactose intollerant also and I get diarreah and bloat. For a baby, that's enough to make them cranky. They have this milk called Lactaid and it's good, no lactose.how old is the baby? If you're just starting him on food, you should begin with baby food. Vegetables first and only one kind so you can see if the baby has alergies. If you give the baby table food, make sure it's like potatoes, soft stuff, no solids, depending on the age, let me know

I had the same problem with my son when I breast fed him. I could not drink milk when I was breastfeeding him, but he had no problems with drinking milk himself. I had no problems with giving him regular formula either. He might have some upset tummy after giving him regular milk the first few times, but it may just be his body getting used to it, not necessarily an intollerance. I have heard that mixing regular cow's milk with formula or breast milk will help with the transition.

I would go ahead and try the yogurt. I had the same problem with my son, only he stopped bratfeeding at 4 months. The enzymes in yogurt actually help with the digestion of dairy products. I'd try a little a see if he has a problem, but I'd also ask his doctor.

Hi - My son was also very cranky after I ate dairy products. He also broke out in a mild rash on his face, head, neck and shoulders after I had dairy. I did not connect the two items (I thought he had a bad case of baby acne) until I read that a dairy allergy sometimes causes a rash only in those areas. When I eliminated dairy in my diet, both the crankiness and the rash cleared up. I do not believe it was lactose intolerance, but an allergy to dairy products, which is fairly common in infants. My son is now 19 months old and does not seem to have any problems eating dairy now. We tried letting him have dairy every now and then and once he passed the one year mark or so, he would get a slight rash and really no crankiness, now he has no problems.

Personally, I would avoid dairy for him for a while, and then try again in a few months and see how he reacts. He may grow out of the intolerance too. Good luck!
