Just wondering if anyone knows if you are to bring the children with you to roundup for kindergarten? Or if this is for parents only? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

I called the school district and kids are not allowed. They told me I could schedule a time to visit the classroom with my child - so we will be doing that. Has anyone ever heard of Oakland Elementary? That is our school and I've rarely heard anything about it?? Should be interesting to visit and see what other parents are like. Thanks for the responses.

I used to teach kindergarten in the Royal Oak school district. Kindergarten roundup is for both the parent and the student. While the parents are having an informational meeting with the principal and some staff, the children are being tested by the kindergarten teachers on skills such as writing their name, recognizing letters, and cutting. This is how it was done about seven years ago when I was still teaching in the district. These meetings were during the day at the specific school that your child will be attending, not the meeting in the evening. Hope this helps!

Round up is for the kids to see the kindergarten room an get a peek at their next year. Some districts have a program for parents at that time also, call the school he will be going to and ask. It is a very exciting time for the kids!

H., I will be attending Upton and Addams this week and will not be bringing my daughter for a couple of reasons. First, I am a year early - I want to learn what i can this year so I will not be so stressed out next year. Second - at 7pm this is too close to bedtime. Third - the one roundup I have attended (briefly) appeared to be a lot of paperwork and a slideshow which was completely geared to the parents. I think the meetings scheduled duringthe day are for the kids, the evening ones are for the parents - it's all very confusing and stressfull (which is why I am planning ahead).

Good luck and maybe I will see you Tues and Wed.

H.,
it varies from school to school and dristrict to district to district so i would suggest you call the local school your child will be attending.

I went to the RO kindergarten round up at Keller last week. I brought my infant - she was fine. A few people brought their school aged kids and I noticed that while it wasn't frowned upon, it was very difficult for the parents to actually listen to the presentation. But then again, this was an hour long thing and it didn't appear that they brought any activity for them to do.
By the way, contrary to what one poster said, we were not able to look at the classrooms - it was just an informational meeting in the cafeteria. I would plan on making a special request to see the classrooms or you may have to schedule a tour at a later time.

I would call and ask too. I'm in the Waterford distric but had to call 2 different times. THe first time they said it was fine but since I didn't get any more information or conformation I called again to make sure the meeting was still on and found out that I can't bring my kids. The newsletter said to check their website but that still doesn't even have the meeting on the schedule and it is THIS week. I'm frustrated with my school and my child hasn't even got in yet, can you tell??!! My school said that sometime in June they will have a meeting with the kids. So I'm sure I will have to call AGAIN to find out when that is. Sorry.... I hope they are better with you. :) Good luck with your Daughters.
