What is your opinon on matching sibling names?

Starting with the same letter, rhyming, ending with the same letter, etc?

I ask because we recently had new neighbors move in next door with five kids, one boy and four girls:
Weston "Wes" then the girls were Elena, Caterina, Natalia & Gianna (the mostly call Caterina Cat and Gianna Gia)

I can't decide if I love this or if its over the top.
Hmm. I don't know just pondering it and wanted to know what other mama's thought.
Hubby is looking at me like i'm crazy :)

What can I do next?

I think those names are OK. I don't mind the final sound matching, in fact, I kind of like that.

What I don't like is big families with names all beginning with the same letter (the Duggars) or whole names that rhyme: Kevin and Devin, Chad and Brad, Sarah and Farrah etc....Now that is annoying!

It doesn't really bother me when people do this. I feel they can name their kids whatever they want. My best friend has 4 kids and they all have names that start with "Sa". She has Samantha, Sabrinna, Salem and Sabastien. Some people just go with a theme. I didn't do that for my kids but we did keep some traditions. My husband initials are J.B. His dad is also. So, my son is Jonathan Brody. I am a 3 generation "Lynn" for my middle name, so I kept that going with my daughter. Her name is Kailey Lynn. I hope that if she ever has a daughter, she will keep it going, but I totally understand if she doesn't want to.

My aunt and uncle's family has all J.M.L initials; even the parents.
I babysat twins named Kerry and Korry
My cousin named his boys Kyle and Kory
The Duggar family named all 19 (or 20?) kids J names
My kids all have Biblical names, and the same middle name (my husband's first name).
My mom grew up with a girl named Candice Cane. When she grew up she married a man with the last name of Barr. She went from being Candy Cane to Candy Barr.

There's a ton of ways to choose your child's name, and I think having your kids' names end in the same vowel sound is the least over the top.

By the way, if I ever have a daughter I hope to name her Elena; and if I have a 2nd, I would do Caterina as well.

ETA: Ok, having read your other question, I am now a bit confused. Your other question says:

Such a coincidence that your 3 kids are named "Weston, Gianna, and Vivienne" and are considering "Elena and Natalia," but you also have a neighboring family with kids named "Weston, Elena, Caterina, Natalia & Gianna." What's the deal? Do you want to just ask us what we think about you naming your twins "Elena" and "Natalia?" You don't have to pretend that you're asking about a neighbor.

I'm confused, they don't start with the same letter or rhyme with each other, and they have either 3 or 4 syllables each. The only thing they have in common is they all end with an "a."
That doesn't seem too "matchy matchy" to me.
I'm T., and my daughters are Alicia and Olivia.
I realized (after I named them) that our names have a similar sound and flow, just like my SIL Amy, who named her girls Abby and Lily.
Also my hubby is Mark, and son is Luke, two hard "c/k" sounds.
Does that seem over the top to you?
Just curious :-)

ETA: Because I was curious about the names of your children, I looked to see if you mentioned them in any other questions or answers and what I found was a bit disturbing . . . I guess I don't understand why you felt the need to even check in with us about 1) an approval from a bunch of strangers and 2) then to lie about it - you must be very insecure about naming them - and I honestly don't know why - they are beautiful names.

PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, but the coincidence is just too much that you would have neighbors move in with the EXACT same names as your children - what's the deal?

Your hubby has a genuine concern!

Your last questions read:

AGAIN, PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!

************************************************************************************

I think you must have some sort of problem with it if you bring it up. As one of the moms said, I hope their mom's not on this site.

With that said, the more important question is, are the children kind, well-mannered, respectful of one another and those around them? That's what I would be concerned with if new neighbors moved in next door with 5 children.

FTR - My 3 daughters' names all start with a K. Yes, there are times I go thru all 3 names before I get the right one, but my mom did the same thing with me and my 2 siblings and none of our names have anything in common.

Just curious - you don't mention anything about your children's names????

Which is it.... your neighbors kids or your future kid?

Over the top in what way? They all seem pretty different to me. Is it because the girls' names end with an "a?" Weston doesn't.

I guess I don't see the common-ness in those four girls names?

I think those names are very pretty and unique.

I am not a fan of starting them all with the same letter - especially when you really need to stretch in order to keep the trend if you have more kids than you planned...but that is my own personal preference...I also don't like kids wearing the same outfit in two different sizes...again, personal preference.

I haven't ever heard a set of names that rhymed...but, I am sure that isn't a preference of mine either :-) Other moms like that kind of thing and that works for them! :-)

Names that start or end with the same letter don't bother me. I do think it is a little ridiculous when people intentionally rhyme (as in here are our children, Pia, Mia, Leah and Dia). I went to school with twins named Shawn and Shawna. I always thought that was an unfortunate choice.

I don't consider the names you have stated to be matching. They are just names. They neither overwhelm nor underwhelm.

I'm not a fan of matching names, but the neighbor girls just all have Italian-ish names. If that's their heritage, there's nothing wrong with it, but it seems silly to have a Weston rather than a Giancarlo or Luca with those girls.
I don't like all the same first letter or rhyming names, but I don't think you should mix heritages in the names. My kids are Kayleigh and Ian. Those go together. If I had a third kid, Giancarlo would have been a ridiculous choice, something like Gavin or Griffin would have flowed right with Kayleigh and Ian. Same with modern/old fashioned. To me, Evelyn and Kayla would not be siblings either. Evelyn would go with something like Nora or Sophie, Kayla would go with something like Meghan or Nicole. I know not everyone thinks as I do and would name their kids according to my "rules" :)

ours all start with the same letter - the kids' that is. We got the idea from two cousins families that either all had the same letter (husband and wife too), or they named all their kids starting with the same letter.

We like that idea, and the letter we chose is also the first letter of our last name!

I know a family that has rhyming, and it doesn't quite sound right to my ear - derek and jaryck.

But I just re-read your question and see that you were wondering about wes, elena, etc. Am I missing something, because those names don't rhyme to me. Are they all the characters from the Twilight or something? I do know of a family that named their kids like that. And I would have loved to name my boys Huckleberry and Tom Sawyer....

I never would have noticed the a at the end if you hadn't pointed it out LOL I don't like the everyone has to have the same initials, or their first names all have to begin with the same letter and NO on the rhyming :) I guess those are more noticable to me then the last letter. Especially since the names are so drastically different in other ways.

I guess I think every one should be named a name that suits them or is picked for them individually rather than based on some preset notion of the names having to "match" in some way :)

And this is coming from the woman whose son is John the 5th LOL (I fought it ... I fought it hard ... but I was over ruled by EVERYONE else in my family LOL).

Both my kids names are two syllables ending in 'n'. We didn't do it on purpose, but if we were to have a third my ocd would require that child to also have a 2 syllable name ending in 'n'. Of course the two we have are O & P names, so the third would have to begin with Q (I know, I know, ocd again) and since I can't find any 2 syllable Q names ending in 'n' we just won't have any more kids, lol.

I think they have great names and the parents like the ending "a" sound.

My daughter and my stepdaughter have matching initials and like-sounding first names. We didn't plan it that way, we just liked the sound of the name, we gave my daughter my mother's name for a middle name and then we realized both girls were RRWs. Now they both like that fact and it is one more thing that makes them sisters.

I had neighbors growing up with five "D" names and a family of cousins with five "D" names (parents were also "D" names). I thought is was kinda cool. My older brothers were Jeff and John. I was going to be Judy but turns out that was a previous girlfriend of my dad's...so there ended the "J" names.

I think it's common to try out names and how they will sound with sibling names, and don't see anything wrong with that.

my boys' names both end in AN. i sometimes giggle thinking about how fun it would have been to have a girl and condense it all down to 'ann.'
ETA i just remembered a book i read years ago, in which all the kids were named after the city in which they were born. it worked out great until they got caught with 'bronx' but couldn't stop the pattern at that point!

Ending with the same letter isn't necessarily intentional. In some languages many names end with an a or e, so this family may not have intentionally "matched" the sounds of their girls' names.

What I do find over the top is families who clearly go far out of their way to get names tht do match. I grew up with a family where the children's first and middle names were - I swear - "Misty Dawn," "Late Evening" and something else similar. It was way too affected -- trying too hard. And Misty was OK, but Evening -- imagine the teasing.

I also knew a family where all the kids had the same three initials, DDM. So the family, by the fourth kid, was really reaching for more D names. It just ended up being all rather silly, but it's the kind of joke that haunts the poor kids for life.

I know these examples sound nutty and "trollish" but they're for real!

I like continuity. I like names to match in some way. My boys are Evan and Owen. I named them both after my father, John (both names are forms of John) If I had two more boys they would have been Iain and Sean. A girl would have been Morgan. To me there needs to be a rhyme or reason to everything. So, yeah, I really like that all four of those girls names end in "a". Very pretty.

A similar ending doesn't usually bother me. In some languages, 90% of girls' names end in a.

I personally prefer for names to begin with different letters, or at least different sounds (Caroline, Charlotte, and Cecilia would be okay) and not to fully rhyme (Elena and Natalia sound fine to me; Aidan, Jaiden, and Braden, not so much). But I also like for names to share a common language of origin or a similar style.

Lots of boys have been named "junior" for generations. My cousins all have the same initials. Another friend has a daughter Kerry and a husband Jerry - that's way more confusing when you're calling someone to the phone. Another family I know has daughters named Sonnet, Story and Novel.

Although the girls' names do end with "a", they don't really sound the same (like Ricki and Nikki).

When they do rhyme and/or sound more alike I think it is cute when they are little but as adults, not so much.

I went to school with a girl whose parents named all their kids with names that began with C...Cliff, Caroline, Cora, etc. They didn't sound alike but they were all C. "Smith".

My son is a junior and his initials spell MAG. His dad's two daughters (who came later) also share the same initials...so all but his stepmom has the same initials but their names are completely different (except him and his dad of course). I think that is cuter than sounding the same.

I see you are picking up on the "a" endings. That said, it might be that the parents have an aesthetic preference for names that end with that softer sound.

I think that whatever I think about what people name their babies is pretty irrelevant in the big picture. I'm sure I do a lot of stuff other people might not do, too. My son has a Spanish name and we are not of Spanish decent; we named him for a person we admired and the name suits him to a tee. I guess that's the criteria, really-- if the name suits the child. My son can pronounce, read and write his name although it's not spelled phonetically. (One friend has chastised me for this. :) )Personally, I wonder if the names are as Diane B suggested, of a certain cultural heritage (which was what first crossed my mind) or just appealed to them. In any case, they are definitely nice names and not super trendy. ( I like a good, sturdy name!)

My girls both have French names. Not crazy, over-the-top French names, but we decided the two names shouldn't sound out of place with each other, or with our last name. Our last name is fairly generic, so we had some room to give the girls interesting names.

I like the girls names you listed above, but I'm confused about the boy's name. It doesn't go with the girls' names at all. I think if a family has 4 girls with Italian names, then the boy should be named Alessandro or Antonio or Giovanni or something.

I can't stand it when people have a lot of kids, and name them all something with the same first letter. The Duggar family names are the tackiest ever, IMO. I just feel like the kids are sort of lumped together in one mass of children, rather than being individuals. I'm sure that's not actually true, but 19 kids with J names seems pretty contrived.
