My daughter just turned 2 years old YESTERDAY! She took off her clothes a couple times at the house as kids will do... she's started taking off her diaper. Today me and my dad were outside building this cool playground for her and my mom was watching her... my lil one took off her pants and diaper and pooped on the floor lol. I was kind of shocked. Is this a hint I should introduce her to the potty? She says I'm pooping when she is or about to.

Peg- she does a great deal of the things on the checklist, thank you for that :) She's very bright and talks sentences. The only thing is she doesn't ask to go to the potty but she says it and will follow me so I used the potty in front of her and she said momma usin the potty.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys... I see your point on the pull ups but my babysitter was sayin she pretty much demands pull ups at first at her house. I let her pick and of course the one she wanted looked like momma's potty but was the most expensive (lol go figure). She sat on it for fun with bare bottom, left, and sat bare bottom on it again... I went out of the room for 2 minutes and she went pee it was so cool. She was shocked though because she stood up on got it on the seat haha. It was darling... my baby's getting so big.

I would like to use the 3 day method but we live with my parents and my mom has horrible anxiety issues and would freak out every second she was without a pull up (like just pants or bare bottomed) because of the mess, EVEN if it means a faster potty train so it'll have to be a longer process... I'll use underwear here after a week or two.

I would have a potty there, and if she strips down, you may be able to get her on it in time. I would ask if she wants to use the potty, if she does, and seems interested, you can ask her more often.

Sounds like she's interested! We just potty trained our 2.5 year old. What worked best was to keep a potty chair in the room we were in and have her wear just cotton undies or training pants or have a bare bottom. We stayed home for several days and "practiced" and she really got the hang of it with the bare bottom. Now she only wears a Pull-up if we go out in case of an accident, but most of the time at stores and places, she tells me she needs to go and keeps her Pull-Up dry. Like others have said, Pull-ups can hinder the process because they feel like a diaper, so start with undies or a bare bottom, then only use Pull-ups if necessary when going out. Good luck!!

I guess it depends on how quickly you want this to go. If you start now, it may take longer over all. If you wait she could develop resistance to the idea as she enters the terrible twos and you may have to wait till she is 3 or 4. Sure at that age it may take way less time to train her, but then she is sitting in her own waste (too put it bluntly) for an extra year or two. I'm sure this annoys people who wait till their child is 3 or 4 to train but IMO it depends on the child. My 20 month old hated diaper changes and despised sitting in her own poop. Potty training was easier even though it took longer than it may take a 4 year old to train. More importantly it matched what my child wanted. She didn't want to sit in her own waste and then be changed--she's super independent about lots of things. Also, she was not super resistant to things yet so in a month she was mostly trained. She had one regressive period in the summer but now she tells me when she has to go for the most part . As for the checklist, yeah they are helpful but she still does not have the gross motor skills to get on the big potty herself or to wash her hands by herself. She doesn't have enough fine motor in her hands to flush the toilet herself or to completely pull up or down her pants. I don't think a parent should feel like they should wait until the child could go to the bathroom by themselves without any help before starting potty learning. My daughter would be miserable if I hadn't read her cues and started with the potty.

YES!!! Have her go to the store with you and pick out a potty chair or seat. Also, check your local library for the 1-day or 3-day potty training methods. Set aside a weekend to work on it.

Here's one of several sites that gives some great "readiness" checklists. If you can find her in most or all of these, she may well be ready. If not, you'll save both of you a great deal of stress to just keep up the educational pre-training with positive messages, books and videos, demonstrating how to potty, role-playing with dolls and toys, etc.

My 2 y/o son was the same way. We started early with him as well, we tried doing the pull up thing, after a few months we saw it wasn't working. So after alot of research I decided the best approach for us was something I found on Baby Center It was to let him be naked from the waist down (I am a stay at home Mom, so this worked for us) and if we went out of the house I would just put pants on him with no diaper and no underwear. I set an egg timer for ever 30 minutes and I would have him sit on his potty which I had in front of the tv so if he had to sit for 20 minutes or so until he went he was entertained at least. After about 3 days he had the hang of it, it took me a few weeks to find his pooping schedule so we could be sure to be near a potty.

I think it is best to try when they exhibit interest. She sounds very interested. If you skip this chance, she may loose interest for quite some time and your future attempts will be useless. So yes, she does sound ready to me. I personally don't see any harm in trying now as long as you keep it a positive experience. If it works, FANTASTIC, if not, no sweat, try again in a couple of months. I know that there are a ton of kids out there not training until 3 or 4 but there are also many children trained younger. I personally know many children who trained in their early twos (22-26 month range). One example is my friend with boy/girl twins who were both day trained by 25 months. Her daughter dropped the nighttime diaper a couple of months later and her son kept it for another couple of months past her daughter but by 2 1/2 neither child was even wearing a diaper at night. It is possible. Good luck. Just mentally prepare yourself for a few days of mess :-)

WOO HOO.
Congratulations!
Your little girl is a delight!
She's the one that makes all the other mothers jealous.
Yes. She's definitely ready.
And you'll have such fun buying cute little underpants.
I remember when my (similarly brilliant) little girl
figured out using the potty and we changed to underpants
and it was such a treat to see her tiny little bottom
instead of the big fat diapered bottom she used to have
and that most kids still have at that age.
Enjoy!!

Yes, yes, yes! Go for it! My son had just turned 2 and we introduced the potty, and gave him rewards for poops (they were hardest for him) and within 2 weeks he was out of diapers. Shortly after that, he was in undies full time- nights and naps too! What have you got to lose? I read a great book that talked about introducing the potty early- BEFORE they hit the "terrible twos", where it's more of a battle, and I'm so glad we did that! My son is now 3 and has a 5 month old little brother, and it's GREAT not to have 2 in diapers and know that my son can do it all on his own now, because he's been doing it for a year already. ;)

Good luck!

She sounds it to me. We used a very basic plain potty seat no bells and whistles. Avoid pull ups they will hinder the process and I also suggest that you look into the 3 day bare bottom method 2 is a great age for it :)

She might be ready, but is she going to want to use it all the time when she starts playing and doesn't want to stop playing for a potty break? Lot's of people start potty training early but then got so frustrated when child gets tired of the potty game and doesn't want to play it anymore. They've got to want to use it all the time, every time and that maturity often takes a bit more developing than a 2 yr old will have. My son started training at 3 and was day trained at 3 1/2 (he wore pull ups at night till he was 7). I just didn't want to deal with puddles and poopy clothes on a regular basis, so I waited till I would have an excellent chance at success.

YES! Follow her lead! My daughter trained super early too & it has been great! I know some parents would prefer to deal with diapers over accidents from time to time, but I was not one of them. :) My daughter also was taking her diaper off & peeing on the floor, so I had to clean the floor either way. Another advantage to starting now is avoiding the resistance to what you say; if it's her idea & what she wants, it will be easier all around! My DD likes to be clean, so I think that made a difference for her (she wore cloth diapers, so she could feel it). And like yours, she was very verbal early. Great job momma on paying attention & reading your girl's cues! She's a lucky little girl to have you for a mom!
