Irregular Periods/getting Pregnant......

So here's my question........I have a 4 year old daughter, for about a year after I had her I was on depo provera, but since then I have been on nothing and have had sex 2-3 times a week unprotected and have not gotten pregnant, we are not necessarily trying for another one, but we feel like if it happens we will be happy, if not, we will be happy. It's been so long now that I am concerned with why i am not getting pregnant. Since I have had my daughter my periods have been pretty light but the last few months they have been even lighter than normal and for the past two months they are becoming farther and farther apart. My last period started March 3rd and it is now April 6th (35 days) and I have not gotten anything, the only menstrual sypmtom i have is that my chest hurts, which always happens until I get my period. Is this cause for alarm, is there anything i should watch for? I am 25 years old by the way. I am not pregnant as i took an early test and this may sound funny, but I do not feel the slightest bit pregnant.

What can I do next?

I have always had irregular periods and struggled with getting pregnant for a few years and then.....I discovered ovulation predictor tests. I had three pregnancies (2 successful and 1 miscarriage). I will absolutely swear by these tests.

as always talk to your Dr- but I think charting your temps with a basal thermometer/chart would help you get a better understanding of your body and predicting your cycle. It will show you your temp pattern so if all you want is piece of mind it will give you that. Also if you want a baby it can help you get pregnant. I had a hard time conceiving, it took 3 years to successfully get pregnant with my first. Charting is how I finally got him, 6 months trying for my second. Follow the patterns- google it, there are free charts, thermometers only cost about 10 dollars and you can get an idea where your body is at- good luck!

I have a different situation... I'm almost 29, have had four kids and never have I used any form of birth control (after our fourth, husband got a vasectomy). However, I just wanted to tell you that I have been irregular basically since I started having periods. My diet, exercise, weight (I was always pretty thin-but my weight would always fluctuate 10-15 lbs back and forth) and stress-level seem to play a role.

I never looked extensively into it, but I found at times I was stressed for long periods of time, I wouldn't have my period for 3 months! At times I'd be more active than others, I'd also have less periods and although I've always had a healthy appetite, when I wouldn't eat quite as much I'd "skip" a month.... I have heard that these could also be reasons why a person with otherwise a "normal" period would also have their schedule messed up. On the other hand, it is probably just me since it has been this way for me forever.

Whatever the reason, you should probably go to a Gynecologist just to check things out anyway... I know very well about how annoying it can be to not know when to expect your period... way too well! ...like at the beach (I HATE tampons), at work, stuck in traffic...lol

Unfortunately Depoprovera screws up the system for many years post its window of protection. Thsi does not mean you cannot get pregnant, you may already be pregnant. Get some blood work run, hormones, both immediately after the first day of your period and then on day 16-18 post the first day of your period. this will give a Dr some level of assurace as to what state of affairs the cycle of yuor fertility is in. GO se a fertility Dr...

Well I know that most doctors won't see you for fertility problems until you have been trying for a year. but if you would like to get your periods regulated you could get on the pill for a couple months and then try to get pregnant. And sometimes woman and just have a few off months with their periods and they are just fine and healthy.

I have had issues with mine for a while. I was on the pepo for a few years w/ no cycle. I stopped taking it in 2001 hoping to have a baby in 2002 after I finished school... but that didn't happen because I didn't have any periods for over a year. I went to 2 docs that told me I couldn't have anymore kids due to hardening of my ovaries. But in 2003 I found out I was expecting - which we laughted about cause I was suppose to be "broken". After having our daughter 2004, we had boys in 2005 & 2007 and are currently expecting a baby in July.

I just have to look at is as 2002 wasn't our time to have a baby... but to be honest, 2004 worked out better. By then we had bought our home & got on out feet in it. So, all in all - it did work out better for us to wait the 2 years. But now I have issues w/ giving up my ablity to have kids... I don't want to go though what I did when I thought I was "broken".

Good luck - it can happen... it just takes longer to happen when you aren't regular. I still am not regular to this day - unless I'm on BC. So, for me it's easier to get pregnant right after I stop taking the pill after being on it for atleast 4-5 months. Might be a trick to try.

You could try the over-the-counter ovulation tests (just Google Ovulation Tester for several product options). This will at least tell you when you are ovulating. But in the bigger picture, the best thing to do is consult your OB/Gyn. There can be many factors contributing to your erratic periods including genetics and stress. Talk to your doctor and give him a clear picture of your lifestyle - he will be able to run some tests and give you some feedback.

You definitely qualify for fertility testing because you have not gotten pregnant in over a year of "trying". So this is a good way to find out more about what is going on and what your different options are.

I think the depo is what messed up your cycle. I was on depo for 6 months after i had my daughter and it messed me up terribly. It made me very depressed and this didn't stop after I stopped getting the shots. AND, instead of getting lighter or no periods, I had an almost continuous period - UGH! (that didn't help my mood). Finally, I went on the pill for a few months, and that straightened out both my emotions and my cycle.

So, if you don't want to talk to your dr about fertility issues yet, I would see about going on the pill for 3 or 4 months, and see if your cycle improves. Then when you get off the pill, if you are wanting to try a little harder to get pregnant, you can use either the ovulation testers, or chart your basal temperature and vaginal secretions to see when you are most fertile.

Also, if you don't get your period in a few days, I'd take another pg test. I always had irregular periods before getting pregnant (once every 3-4 months), my only symptom when I was first pg was that my breasts swelled a little as if I was going to get my period, but I didn't get it and eventually I realized, the swelling never really went down so i took a test. (I didn't feel the slightest bit pregnant either)

Good luck!
