Insurance for a Storage Unit

We are moving into an apartment for a few months while our new house is being built. Because the apartment is smaller than our old house, we have had to rent 3 storage units to store all of our furniture and other stuff that won't fit. I would like to get insurance on the contents of the storage units. Does anyone have a reccommendation of a company that will provide insurance on storage units only? We already have renter's insurance on our apartment and that company will not cover storage units.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great advice. We ended up switching our insurance to State Farm. They would provide insurance at a reasonable rate on our belongings wherever they were in the world (in the apartment or storage units)at replacement value. Most of the insurance companies that insured storage units only were very expensive and insured only at depreciated value.

We were in that situation when we were building our home.

I forget exactly who it was but at the time we were dealing with State Farm and Farmers. Those are the only 2 companies we have dealt with since we moved here in 1989. We have been with Farmers since the move in 2000 and I think they were the ones that provided the extra insurance.

Good luck and best wishes with your new home.

My husband and I own a Delivery & Installation company in Plano w/ a 20,000sq/ft warehouse. As for the insurance bit, the company you are renting space from should be able to provide you with insurance above and beyond what your renters insurance will cover (if any), or at least be able to provide you with a resource.

If you need any help with storage needs, please let us know. We can also help with moving into your new home when the time comes.

We wish you and your family the best of luck!

We built a house last year & had to put everything in storage as well. One very important word for you is MOTHBALLS! Rats will eat anything they can find in a storage unit. So don't store any food in there. Go through any purses or backpacks & remove the gum &/or candy. They ate thru my daughters backpack to get to some candy she had forgotten about. They also ate the tubing on the back of my refrigerator which cost me $200 to replace! We have Allstate & they didn't offer 'storage insurance' & neither did the storage facility. So we took our electronics with us where we were staying. It looks like State Farm would be your best bet but don't forget about pest control. Learn my expensive mistake! Good Luck to you!

We have renters insurance through AAA and they provide insurance for items at a different location. It is not specifically for storage units for example it covers our child's band instrument that is stored at the school but it also covers any items in storage.

Your homeowners or renters insurance ought to cover it. Most homeowner/renters policies cover your personal property regardless of where they are.

i believe some storage facilities offer insurance - i don't know if it is the most cost effective route, but i'm pretty sure it was offered to us when we were in a similar situation - we opted out because state farm covered ours

Hi A.,

We have an insurance agency... well, it's my husband and his brother. They would be happy to do that for you! The company is called Clay Paul Insurance, and they can bid it out for you to get the best rate. They write through several different insurance companies.

Just let me know, and I can get you in touch with my husband.

We have had State Farm for years on everything and last summer we were in the same situation. They provided insurance on our 3 storage units for 3 months. I don't know what the stipulations are if you don't have any other policies with them though. Good luck!
