Inducing

I was induced with both of my children. The first time I was induced 2 weeks after my due date and after being in labor for 2 days, I had to have a c-section because the baby was NOT coming out. So even if you are induced it doesn't mean that the doctor is going to "make" his vacation. It's never too late to switch doctors!

Hi D.. I was induced & it made the labor much worse. If you don't have to be & don't want to be, Don't do it.

Hi!!! I was induced with all 3 of my children, born at 37, 38 and 37 weeks of pregnancy. I had an induction with my children due to medical necessity. (I had a renal transplant and to prevent eclampsia because my bp was increasing). I believe it is a safe procedure, but only should be considered IF there is an honest medical concern. Your doctor going off to vacation is NOT a worthy excuse. Try to find another dooctor if he is in a group... if not, tell him it is your first child and you would feel better that you deliver at your due date... good luck and hopefully it will all work out well.

From what you've said your pregnancy is going along great and you are not eve due yet. Do not induce because your Doctor wants to go on vacation. That is ridiculous. Tell your Doctor to keep his pager on. He is first and foremost a Doctor. **Shakes Head**

I feel it is very strange and perhaps a sign of the times that a doctor/Ob would request your baby come from its most sacred place early so he can go on vacation. I think it is down right rediculous actually. Your child should have the right to be a full term baby.
The impression I have of inducing is hardly a comfortable one. You would be forcing your body and the body of your child to do something it is not ready to do.
The best suggestion I can offer is to follow your intuition and research the idea thoroughly.

I was induced with my second child and everything went very smoothly. I have herd some womens labors are worse and contractions are harder but honestly it didn't feel any diffrent than my first child did. From my understanding it it perfectly safe.

Again, I agree with most of the mommies on here...do not let your doctor's vacation dictate your first child's birth! You do what you want to do and trust me, if he is on vacation, and you go into labor, SOMEONE at your hospital is going to deliver that baby! I know I may make someone mad by saying this, but really, you have more contact with the absolutely wonderful labor and delivery nurses than the doctor anyhow. At least that was my experience. I work in a hospital laboratory, and you would be surprised at how many tests and procedures are ordered STAT because the Dr. has to be somewhere--eg. movies, golf. Induction is not bad for the right reasons, i just don't think the doctor's personal reasons are the right ones. Good luck, D.!

You need a new doctor you can trust. Especially at an important time like childbirth! If you feel uncomfortable not knowing your doctor at the time of delivery, hire a doula. They are fairly inexpensive, they work with you and your doctors, and will be there with you through the entire process including delivery. They can help answer the questions you have because a part of their job is to provide research for you.....They are fairly inexpensive as well.

Never induce your labor to accomodate a doctor's personal life! Inducing should only be done when it is best for you and your child. My son was due Nov.4 and because of the fact I was attempting a VBAC and the risks were high, we (my doctor and I) did not want to chance the baby being born after my due date (it increases your chance of needing a c-section if you had one the first time *sidenote).....Nov.2 (two days prior to my due date) I was induced. That same day I went into labor. We did not induce with a drug but we did induce my rupturing my membranes that morning. I had a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after a cesarean)that day. It was awesome.

I would NOT induce in your situation at all. They should have another doctor on call if they cannot make it, or a backup doctor of some kind while he/she is on vacation. Meet them before your due date.
Oh please do not induce under those circumstances. Give natural childbirth a chance to work first and I'll say it again: Hire a doula!.

Inducing should only be done if MEDICALLY necessary, not for vacation purposes. That doctor should be ashamed of himself.
Being induced can set off a domino effect, one intervention leads to another. There's also a higher risk of ended up with a c-section if you get induced. Depending upon what method of induction the OB is using, you may be restricted to your bed and laying down is the generaly the worst position to be in when you are in labor. Add another scenario, you baby may not be ready to come out, which could lead to some problems for your baby.
Please, please reconsider this and you don't have to do an induction for the doctors convenience. You are the consumer and the doctor works for you.

When are you due? Unless you're late and in pain and uncomfortable yeah I should say inducing would be a good option. If you're on time and in great condition I don't think there is a need for you be induce. Everything should be natural since it's your first time. Just take your time and the baby will come out on it's own. Unless your doctor just want to get the baby out so he/she can enjoy the vacation then it's not ok. Now if you're late and uncomfortable then maybe you should take that option but you said you're doing well. Now when I pregnant with my 2nd one I was due on the 13th of January but I was so uncomfortable and my back was just hurting so bad I could not sleep at night. So I told my doctor to induce me on the 9th at 7:00 AM. So I was really looking forward anyway to make the long story short. Since I'm filipina and we believe in superstition my families had me eating shrimp (ONLY IF YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT ALLERGIC TO THEM) they said it induces your labor without the drug so I ate a lot of shrimp. Well I was having labor pains at 3:00 AM that morning and (6:55 AM) 5 minutes I was supposed to be induced my beautiful 9.5 lbs. baby came out. No wonder why I had that aching back and see i'm a believer, I guess the shrimp thing does work.

Are you late? My doctor was going to induce me but the day I was scheduled for that visit I went into labor. I was a week late with her and my doctor had determined on my previous visit that she was ready, just stubborn (a trait she still has :) ) Just because your doctor wants to induced doesn't mean that anything is wrong so try not to worry, but being a first time mommy news like this makes ya nervous! You should call your doctor and ask him directly for his reasoning. Frankly he should have been more specific when he mentioned it! His answer might go along way in making you feel better about the whole thing. Take care of yourself and congratulations!!!!!!

I have been induced with both my children.I found it much easier since the birth was planned.It is very safe,since the Dr.would not induce you unless you were close to your due date anyway.

If there are more OB's in the office where you go, then I don't see a need for your Dr. to induce! Usually, you see all the doctors in the office anyway so just in case you go into labor you won't be surprised when you see someone different! Tell your Dr. your concerns and see what he has to say. Yes, he is the Dr. but if the pregnancy is fine and you are not over your due date, ride it out and let him go on his vacation...

I would not agree to an induction unless medically needed. Its best to let your pregnancy continue and let you baby pick his birthday.

If your dates are off your baby could end up being premature. Most first time mothers go past their due dates.

My twins were in the nicu for a few weeks and they have a chart up there and it has the gestanial age (how far along the mother was) and the corrected gestantial age (how far along the baby was based on size, breathing, refluxes etc) and sometimes they were weeks apart :(

It seems like the only reason your ob wants to induce you is so he can go on vacation. I wouldn't do it. You birth should be what you want, especially your first child. Don't let a doctor take that from you. Your labor can be more intense. I would wait it out...It's not HIS decision when your baby is going to be born.

Hi D.--while I completely agree with what has been already said, I will play the role of the devil's advoctae for a bit. When I went into labor with my son 7 days ago, neither of the 2 doctors in the team I went to were on call--I had the third back up (who I had never met) deliver my baby (via emergency c-section). I was VERY upset that on a day that was so wonderful and emotional, I had a total stranger in charge, especially after 41 weeks of bonding with my doctors. That said, it is annoying that your doctor is trying to take one of the most amazing experiences of your life and do it on his terms. You have a tough choice on your hands, good luck.
